Racing driver Ollie Millroy says competitor Loek Hartog saved his life by pulling him from a burning car after a fiery crash in China. Millroy suffered multiple injuries but says, “I owe you my life.”

Where was the fire crew?
•
u/Spiddy771 3h ago
Not sure. But two teams (last I heard) quit the series over this happening. Massive safety oversights.

Someone mentioned in the other thread that they're volunteers (who ran away in fear). Not sure how true that is though.

In addition to that, medical car driver allegedly was asleep, what delayed emergency help to Ollie.

That would be shocking, that critical first responder responsibilities are left to volunteers instead of paid professionals.

You would be shocked at the corners that are cut in professional sports of all kinds. Many positions are either unpaid or severely underpaid because organizations leverage the prestige factor of getting to work in a desirable field. And of course the further down you drop into the minor leagues, the sketchier it gets.

You should be. That's how it mostly is for formula 1. They know what they're doing but still...
Edit: this is WEC, the pinnacle of endurance racing
Edit 2: look up Roger Williamson crash at Zandvoort. It's from the 70s I believe but it's fucked up how long it takes for them to even get to the car.

This wasn't WEC. It was CGT. Doesn't really matter for the horrible safety standards and support. Really unacceptable

Ah my mistake. I saw it on TV the other day and was confused as to why they were racing in China lol

Is true, staff member ran over with a fire extinguisher and gave it to the other driver then ran away. YouTube vid.

My Dad races and the fire crews in the U.S. tend to get to people in seconds
•
u/themagpie36 1h ago
True, the US does do some things right especially when there's corporate sponsors
•
u/Milord_888 2h ago
Some news reported most fire crews were sleeping (physically), and temporary workers just stared aside
•
u/xX-BurnsY-Xx 1h ago
There's a video on YouTube shown what happened, very unprofessional, no fire crew and the ambulance driver was asleep.

A chinese driver said that the crew there mostly ran away, some ody stayed to give Hartog their fire extinguisher. Ambulance took 15 minutes to arrive because the driver was askeep and they could not get him to wake up.

Next level stuff from Loek, a god damn superhero, but where the Fuck was the fire crew?
•
•
u/CaptainConspiracyy 3h ago
In no way am slagging off the hero but that was long time to be cooking no fire crews? Or extinguishers in cars?
•
u/Drfoxthefurry 2h ago
Can only guess no extinguishers for weight, the fire crew is who should worry about fire, not the drivers
•
u/CaptainConspiracyy 1h ago
You think the drivers wouldnt give a fuck when it comes to saving a life, plus the weight is equal if every has one… id add a couple kilos to save my life.
•
u/LeftJabDaz 3h ago
Not familiar with the sport at all, but it seems like they should have many fire rescue crews stationed all around the track so they can get to any accident in seconds.

•
u/StagnantSweater21 2h ago
Insane to me how much money is in this sport, and they still rely on volunteers for the safety crew??
•
u/StTimmerIV 3h ago
Seems accurate. Reminds me of Senna saving Comas in Belgium GP.
Always look for the helpers.

What a real fucking human. In this dog eat dog world, he didn't even flinch to do the right thing.

Shocking that there were not enough fire Marshall’s. You can see the determination Leo Hartog showed to get in the car and then rescue Ollie Millroy, for a moment it looked like the flames had beaten him off, but he doesn’t give up.
