And he is having the time of his life doing it šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

u/J_Kingsley 19h ago edited 17h ago

It's impresssive af.

But speaking as a fellow lifter.... how do you safely do heavy squats and deadlifts when you have palsy?

I guess most likely they used smith machines and not free weights. But even then...

*EDIT

A poster below commented that he saw a lifter with palsy do 4 plate deadlift (405 lbs).

Another poster with palsy said that when they work out and activate their muscles, they don't shake.

Guess it's possible.

u/Lost_Department_2177 19h ago

Absolutely machines but the guys chiseled.

If he’s not a motivator to get fit idk what would work.

u/A_Furious_Mind 19h ago

UBI that pays based on your lean mass to body fat ratio.

u/reireireis 19h ago

Yeah this would work

u/wanttobeacop 18h ago

I could totally picture a Star Trek episode about a society that's based on this philosophy lol

u/Massive_Lavishness90 17h ago

there's a character in one series who basically lives by this philosophy. Jack Ransome.

u/JUST_LOGGED_IN 15h ago

That sort of reminds me of the book Ready Player Two. The main character's access to the "internet" is restricted unless he burns a specific caloric goal each day. In that book you could say his job depends on access to the internet.

u/amaria_athena 14h ago

Wait what? Is this a sequel to RP1? Which is on my list to read. Do I need to add the RP2 too?!?

u/JUST_LOGGED_IN 14h ago

Yes. I just finished reading both a few months ago. It's one of those books that I keep thinking about after I've read it.

Some dude on 4chan's /fit/ said his motivation to get fit was this kid in his middle school who showed up every day with toothpaste stains on his shirt. The story goes that one day they had a free day and the kid ripped his shirt off and ran around and the dude was ripped. The poster stated if it wasn't for that moment he would have never started his journey at the gym.

There’s the a guy near my gym with cerebral palsy as well. Witnessed him deadlifting 4 plates total sometime last year. This was free weights and not the smith machine. I was genuinely shocked and impressed

u/Mundane_Gold 19h ago

You witnessed a legend

u/TheSorceIsFrong 19h ago

Did he shake during the whole rep or how did that work?

u/sydneato 19h ago

I just have slight tremors, but I find that they’re practically nonexistent when my muscles are engaged (weightlifting etc)

u/TheSorceIsFrong 19h ago

Sick that’s neat to know. Are there any treatments that kinda mimic or trick your muscles into thinking they’re engaged to minimize tremors?

I guess anything that tricks your muscles into thinking they’re engaged like electricity or whatever would cause them to actually engage though

u/Stonerish 18h ago

Dry needling. They send electricity through acupuncture needles. The goal is to get the muscle to realize its tight and let go…it works for a bit and I feel great after the session, but it comes back in la couple hours. I have a mild case in my legs. Just started treatment this year. Botox is longer term, but I can’t afford it

u/Strawbuddy 15h ago

TENS and then IF units, then maybe a spinal cord stimulator. Here in the US insurance often covers pain mgmt clinics where this is handled

u/J_Kingsley 18h ago

I'd imagine the weight itself acts to stabilize him quit a bit. An overhead press might be less ideal though.

u/suhaibh12 18h ago

I’m also guessing lots of weight machines rather than free weights. Either way this is crazy, mind blowing impressive.

u/Drakorai 19h ago

Lots of support and spotters?

u/Frozencold19 19h ago

Spotting this guy would probably put you both at risk, he just has to go slow enough with weight he can handle in a rack with safety bars

I bet he looks a lot more steady lifting than trying to pose on stage

u/lightr3nd 19h ago

I like this take. It rings true. It's a strategy that allows for progressive overload. He would eventually lift enough to grow to this size... Uhm... With a certain measure of determination!

u/Mundane_Gold 19h ago

It’s my first thought too

u/MassiveBlackout 19h ago

There is a video of Bitelo asking him if he wants help and then his response is interesting…

u/hxl004 19h ago

What’s the response?

u/MassiveBlackout 18h ago

Bitelo tries to treat him like a special person, and he doesn’t want that.

He also trains very hard and pushes himself over his limits. There is a video where he doesn’t stop and people keep saying stop it’s enough, then after they asked why and he said his mother carried him for over 8 years and that it’s the minimum that he can do…

u/J_Kingsley 18h ago

Shouldn't be enough even with spotters, if you're talking free weights.

Deadlifts and squats can get so fecking technical even intermediate lifters have form issues.

When holding that much weight any jostling or shaking can get EXTREMELY dangerous, from loss of balance or form failure.

It has to be machine I think. I can't believe he can do heavy lifting with barbells.

*EDIT

Poster below me said he saw someone with palsy deadlift 4 plates (405 lbs).

Guess I'm completely wrong lol.

But I'd love to see it to figure out the mechanics of how they do it without injuring themselves. I've injured myself before and I don't have stability issues like these guys lol

u/cheesec4ke69 19h ago

Im a complete gym noob, he probably has someone helping/spotting, maybe a trainer who came up with a plan that works better for him and any difficulties with movement. Ive seen a few clips of people with cerebral palsey lifting weights (whether for fun or some sort of PT) with others' help and a few pieces of equipment that help them hold the weight/attach the weight to them.

Obligatory, no matter the specifics, not only are his results extremely impressive, so is his journey as well as his joy.

u/hxl004 19h ago

Also me… would swimming work? I guess you couldn’t build muscle like this on swimming alone.

u/earanhart 19h ago

Swimming is phenomenal for strength and stamina building, and some body builders will use it while cutting, but it leads to smoother, less bulky muscles so it's not used for building these kinds of bodies. At least not in the time leading up to a competition. Swimmers tend toward much leaner bodies than body builders want.

Its a weird thing how nerves and muscles work

My dad had a friend that lost the ability to speak in an accident, he had to think every word syllables by syllable and talked really slow, but then he found he could sing on a normal speed so he just sang everything he said.

u/felhuy 18h ago edited 12h ago

You can reach olympia level physique without ever doing Squats and especially deadlifts in your life. There is nothing special about them, squats are tom platz propaganda, hack squats can be superior with complementary work for example. It's just doesn't feel as good as freeweighting a barbel for most people I guess. This guys legs could have been buit with just leg curls considering his condition.

u/n00bsauce1987 16h ago

As a kiddo with cerebral palsy, I can say that the trick is focusing on the movement. With practice you can not stiffen up or shake because it's all going to the focused muscle that is working.

I would imagine a "safer" way or one that wouldn't cause as much concern if people with palsy who lift use machines more often than not rather than free weights. But if your a professional, there is a reason why.

u/J_Kingsley 16h ago

Ahh.

So is it like, when you're relaxed then you shake. But if you're doing focused movement then your muscles don't shake? Does that apply to writing too or other fine control? Thanks! It's fascinating and i'm learning a lot ty

u/n00bsauce1987 15h ago

At least for my kiddo, fine control. It's really cool to see because when she's in therapy or focusing on completing a goal, she doesn't tense up or have erratic movement.

But when she's lounging and watching TV, she can stiffen up through excitement. Then, the erratic movements come out because, I think, there's no focus point to let out that energy.

u/Afraid_Emu8068 19h ago

Yeah as I understand it, building muscle at all with palsy is hella impressive but this guy is jacked more than the rest of us normies to begin with. Dude needs two awards

u/sharklee88 18h ago

Probably doesn't. Leg press and leg curl machines, I would guess.Ā

I would imagine for safety most of his workouts would be machine-based (but I might be wrong).Ā

u/stupidname412 18h ago

Yeah I ripped my shoulder just looking at this.

u/Emergency_Revenue678 17h ago

The same way everybody else does. You start light and work your way to heavy. Lifting with "bad" form is only dangerous if the bad form is compensating for your lack of strength. As long as you responsibly progress with bad form you'll be fine.

u/Zypher634 19h ago edited 15h ago

Let's not use CP as an abbreviation pls

  1. Thank you for the awards

  2. BTW I'm Hella proud of this guy for not letting it get in his way. He looks great.

  3. Holy the medical people found the reply. I'm going to state it like this. Your niche terminology in the medical field is completely understandable. But for a majority of the population, if you ask them what CP stands for, they generally would say Chris Hansen is coming to find your ass. I'm not trying to defect and say you guys are wrong and I understand it's on a cerebral palsy post. But a vast majority of people would say it's the no no term.

u/ZeusMan574 19h ago

u/StonedGhoster 19h ago

I work with individuals with disabilities and I didn’t think twice about it. Thanks for pointing that out.

u/Rickest-ofthe-Ricks 19h ago

Yeah I’m with you. When I see CP, I’m not thinking ā€œCHILD PORN!ā€ That’s such a gross and obscure taboo subject for it to earn first dibs on a fairly common acronym for cerebral palsy. How often are we referencing child porn enough for us to abbreviate it?

I think it’s one of those things where Reddit doesn’t accurately reflect the real world.

u/Kintrai 18h ago

Oh it accurately reflects the real world unless you're someone who interacts with disabilities often. Most people are not going to think cp refers to cerebral palsy unless there is previous context to make that inference.

And unfortunately this topic comes up fairly often because we have plenty of politicians (especially conservative ones), pastors, and cops here in the US getting caught with it or something adjacent to it. Tragic really.

u/Arlitto 19h ago

u/EffableLemming 19h ago

→ More replies (1)

u/eternal-harvest 16h ago

Conversely, I think we should use it. We should reclaim CP for cerebral palsy.

We're trying to move away from CP meaning child pornography because "pornography" downplays the severity of the material.

The better acronym is CSAM (child sexual abuse material). It highlights the heinous nature of the material.

u/Zypher634 15h ago

This is a much better explanation and I completely agree

u/HoS_CaptObvious 18h ago

Or just be normal and not think of the worst possible use of an abbreviation. It's one thing if someone uses it with no context but we're in a thread about cerebral palsy and it's the common medical abbreviation...

u/No_Butterfly_820 17h ago

In some games I play, the term "combat power" is abbreviated to cp lol, always found it weird but just got used to it (the abbreviation, not the bad version of it). It’s somewhat common for most games I play where combat power is a thing

Outside of that I tend to agree

→ More replies (2)

u/jumping_jrex 15h ago

You need to read the context. No one is talking about explicit materials of children. This post is about cerebral palsy. The acronym is logical and makes sense.

Modified small typo.

u/briana_elizabeth13 9h ago edited 9h ago

As someone with CP, don’t tell people not to say this. Worldwide, an estimated 18 million people live with cerebral palsy and it’s medically abbreviated as CP. It’s one of the most common physical disabilities in the world and I’m sick of not being able use the medical abbreviation for something that affects me daily cause some sick fucks are out there. Because of this mentality, companies have been using AI to mark posts talking about cerebral palsy as inappropriate, which is extremely frustrating for the disability community. We are tired, we are fighting for our rights, and I’m not gonna let fucking pedophiles ruin a medical abbreviation.

Cerebral Palsy affects muscle tone, but this guy worked incredibly hard and said ā€œno thanks!ā€ My muscle tone will be RIPPED.

u/GammelGrinebiter 18h ago

Can affect muscle tone. There are many forms of cerebral palsy.

u/Goatsfallingfucks 16h ago

Just out of complete curiosity as I know nothing what so ever about palsy, but using this guys type of cerebral palsy as an example, does the constant shaking sort of act as like a muscle toner or almost like a bit of a work out for the body? This isn't meant in a rude way, just a genuinely curios way so please don't shoot me for asking but surely, if your body is active that much constantly it would keep you on the slimmer side maybe?

Not to belittle what this guys done cause this guy definitely worked for that holy shit he's impressive but just got me thinking

It can affect it by making them too stiff (hypertonia) or too floppy (hypotonia)

Muscle tone is not muscle definition. It's contraction during a resting state. Low muscle tone means that when not in use, your muscles are more relaxed than they should be, so they can't 'spring into action' as well.

Right? I said the same in another comment befofe I saw this one but yours is more succinct.Ā

Kinda ironic that this man, despite all odds, took it upon himself to do the incredibly hard work and do the best job possible. The training and learning must have been incredibly difficult but he refused to let anything stand in his way and through sheer determination and willpower he fuckin did it.... and then the event itself took the easy way and used bullshit a.i. graphics for the backdrop.

I get why people use a.i. and all that. I hate it but I get it.Ā

But at an event where the whole point is to show off what works of art humans are capable of achieving, using their body as their canvas? Then to turn around and use a.i. to do all the other kinds of art?

That shit is mad hilarious - and they should be embarrassed.Ā

It should go against everything those events are supposed to represent, right?

So. I hate shit like this.

Not because I don’t respect the effort of those who work within the confines of the limitations imposed upon them by their disability.

I hate this because it’s advertised to able-bodied people as ā€œIF HE CAN DO IT SO CAN YOUā€.

In Disability Politics, this concept is sometimes referred to as ā€˜Inspiration Porn’ and serves, mostly, to push able-bodied people past their own bodily limitations, often resulting in people suffering permanent injury.

We shouldn’t celebrate people like this BECAUSE they achieved it in spite of their disability. We should celebrate the ACHIEVEMENT itself.

We can acknowledge that disability, but we shouldn’t allow it to become a ā€œstop being lazyā€ argument.

These are people - working within the confines of the circumstances of their own bodily limitations.

They are not your excuse to call someone lazy.

They are not your aspiration.

Celebrate them as people - not as a LinkedIn sob story to justify ā€œhard workā€.
