All of this renaming stuff are just desperate moves by a man who wants to make a legacy but is genuinely unable to build anything. That's what I think this whole business is about. He's just genuinely so incompetent that one has to wonder what the hell did his father teach him?

Tolkien said that evil cannot create anything new or lasting. It can only modify and corrupt and even then, it is all ephemeral

u/nauticalsandwich 21h ago
Ghengis Khan would like a word, as would the Third Reich's autobahn.
•
u/washwind Victor Hugo 21h ago
The autobahn was planned and started by the Weimar republic. Once the nazis took control they decided to take all the credit and use it as a propaganda piece.

"Actually this guy was alright because he spared a few engineers. Spared from what? Oh, from all those times he went round slaughtering entire cities."
What next, apologetics for the trans-Atlantic slave trade because they built some infrastructure? Khan is remembered as evil because he killed millions of people in wars of conquest.
•
u/SenranHaruka shame 20h ago
Khan isn't remembered as evil because he did all his raping and pillaging before the cutoff date he's a "Great Leader" like caesar and justinian
•
u/Petrichordates 20h ago
Khan isnt remembered as evil though, that's not how people describe him (well, outside of China). He simply reflects the era he was born into.
•
•
u/nauticalsandwich 20h ago
"Ghengis Khan wasn't evil because he built lasting things." What a tautology.

"Killing and raping tens of millions of people is OK if the result militaristic empire has some rules broadly similar to the modern day" is an absolutely wild take.

80 years old he doesn't realize that you have to do good, genuinely useful things for other people and then other people name things after you.

We've been there for a bit. Make no mistake, any chud who believes for instance that vandals covertly got in the water and cut giant gashes in the reflecting pool are as divorced from reality as a North Korean peasant.

Lee is the most craven senator. And I am aware of Rick Scott's existence as I say this.
•
u/lot183 Blue Texas 23h ago
I still can't get over that regular people got jailed for posting Charlie Kirk quotes after his death but Mike Lee, a sitting US senator, actively made fun of Melissa Hortmans death and didn't even get as much as a censure. Fills me with rage when I think about it. Awful human being who makes the office far less dignified by being there
•
u/20_mile 23h ago
The worst thing that happened to Lee after that was when a Minnesota senator, I think, confronted him about the tweet, and it was filmed by a news crew.
I think it was a Last Week Tonight episode that showed Lee at a fancy resort, refusing to answer a question, and it was just so clear that the guy doesn't believe in anything except enriching himself and fooling his constituents into continuing to provide him with a job.
•
u/NotAYankeesFan404 Trans Pride 19h ago
Since when was Mike Lee a libertarian? He's basically a groyper with him thinking that US soldiers are free to murder Japanese citizens in their humvees without consequence.

u/RodChainFurlongAcre 1d ago
I said it in the DT a couple days ago, but this shit is basically rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
An addlebrained old man who is supposedly the President of the most powerful nation on earth is instead sitting on his phone posting 40 AI generated memes and renaming gilded national park bathrooms.

One thing that really gets me, beyond everything else, is just how lazy it is. There are other renames you can do than just tacking America on in something's place. It's generally lacking in charm, sure, but at least vary it up a little if you're going to LARP about this!

I completely agree. But he is not renaming New Mexico. It looks like a dumb joke. I donāt need to be outraged over it.
•
•
u/Devium44 1d ago
How on earth can you say people are over-reacting? The White House just posted space force uniforms literally based on Nazi uniforms. Why do you expect people to flawlessly parse out what is real and what is a-joke-for-now-until-Trump-keeps-pushing-it-until-it-becomes-real?

When I read the bit that mentioned it being based on starship troopers I assumed it was a fake bc that was just absurdly stupid even if you were braindead enough to miss the satire. At this rate he'll be throwing half the military budget at a Helldivers program.

So much evil shit he's done started as a joke and everyone laughed and told me to calm down when he said it
Then he did it and they were like yes sir this is most brilliant thing ever sir
That's funny, one moment its so ridiculous I'm contemptible for taking it seriously, then the other second they're all lined up like mindless lemmings behind it and I'm contemptible for not being aligned with the greatest thing ever
You can only pull this fuckery so many times you mindless lemmings

u/WOKE_AI_GOD John Brown 19h ago
Oh the most powerful man in the world was just lying why are you overreacting to the symbols the most powerful man in the world is deliberately putting out there
•
u/BillyTenderness 23h ago
I know this is just more of his shitposting but let's take a moment to note the utter contempt the man has not only for US allies, but for actual US states as well.
The idea of a president threatening(?) to unilaterally rename a state just so profoundly misunderstands the entire constitutional order and the president's place in it. The withholding of disaster and healthcare funds from states he doesn't like is cut from the same cloth. An absolute cancer that's corrosive to the union.

I think the antics like this get more outlandish as his political power gets weaker. He is very likely to have a hostile House in a few months, and a hostile Senate is well within the realm of possibility. He has had nothing but bad news in polling, and it just seems like the cultural shift to the right we saw in 2023 through 2025 is fading away. And as the swing voters do what swing voters do, he will double down on things that excite his fanatical supporters in an attempt to shield himself from reality. There is of course, the idea that he is able to rally around āanti wokeism,ā but I donāt buy that, at least not this time. I think he will discover that culture war fatigue goes both ways

Bill Maher looking pretty snazzy after defecting to the "He's not such a bad guy once you get to know him. The left is overreacting" crowd.
•
u/ginger2020 Loyal Liberals 19h ago
I think Bill Maher has some good points..occasionally when it comes to some of the performative excesses of campus politics & activism. He is, however, a major asshole, and also a radical contrarian who must always question modern liberal politics, no matter when it is blindingly obvious theyāre right. I refer you to the segment on his touting John fucking Fetterman as the guy for 2028.
•
u/LargeLanguageModelo 18h ago
He's simply a contrarian. He was agnostic until it became trendy to be an atheist (and even would explicitly say he was not an atheist). Good on him for shutting the fuck up on the issue, but he was an anti-vaxxer before it was cool, saying stuff like healthy people didn't need them (guy was amnesic on things like measles and polio, I guess).
He's driving ratings. He doesn't believe in anything, except the legalization of pot. If you can go from giving $1m to Obama's 2012 campaign to saying what a great guy Trump was, AFTER you opposed the shit out of him for 9 years of his (Trump's) political life, the stuff like Fetterman, etc, well, fuck him. We see what makes him cheer. His words mean nothing.
