Help request Painfully lengthy update

Post image
Upvotes

Today's MX Updater process has been painfully slow. The downloads came in fine, but the installation process has been going on for about 25 minutes so far (4 kernel versions, with multiple, lengthy mok.pub creations for each kernel version, language pack updates for a few dozen languages that I don't use, and then the boot initialization files for the kernels.

Admittedly, this is on an older, slower Chromebook 3100, but is there a way to delete unused languages, and/or limit the number of old kernels maintained on my machine?

Thanks in advance...

Help request I installed MX Linux XFCE on my Chromebook 11 Dell 3120 (16GB/4) through the SD Card :D - Is it possible to have multiple audio sources active at the same time?

Post image

Sorry if the image isn't very good but I am very happy as I installed the system on my Chromebook, I think everything works but I think I may have an issue that I only can have one audio source active at a time. If I may ask, is it possible to fix this?

Thank you and have a great day! :D

Help request My laptop randomly stays powered ON after SHUT DOWN

Upvotes

Hello everybody. It's been an amazing month I've been testing MX Linux KDE and it has become my daily driver. I haven't found a reason to log in to Windows since then.

There is only one small issue that is not consistent (it happens 1/10 times) and I just have to keep an eye when I shut down my laptop. Seems like the OS shuts down everything but my laptop stays powered on with a black screen. When it happens I can see the little power on LED staying ON, but with a black screen, and I just have to press the power button for a few seconds to forcefully turn my laptop OFF.

It's a very minor issue but it bothers me because I cannot just press SHUT DOWN and close the lid. I have to stay there looking for the power ON led to go OFF.

Since it's a laptop, when it happens, it drains my battery if I don't realise it happened. And if I turn it ON next day, the battery is completely drained which is very annoying.

Anybody has encountered that issue?

I've tried Linux on and off for years but it never stuck with me. My laptop coincidentally fell apart about the time Win10 support ended. I grabbed a $50 business machine on ebay, switched to Mint and was happy, but it felt too hand-holdy and windows adjacent. I switched to MX and never looked back. I'm running sysvinit and xfce for lower overhead and I can't say anything negative. This old E5440 feels great; aside from disabling the Optimus driven NVIDIA card and a widely unsupported fingerprint reader, this machine acts like it was built for this. I've learned a ton and the more I settle into the system, the less it resembles windows.

One thing that's hard to really impress on someone that hasn't used linux is how much more personal the system becomes. Windows is a big cookie cutter with access (often paid) to lots things lots of people might need. Linux is the opposite: an environment you can shape to meet your needs so that your machine does what you need it to do the way you like it done. I laughed when I saw Conky at first boot because it's so 15 years ago. It reminded me of modding WinXP/8 with Rainmeter as a kid. But thinking on it again, that was peak Windows! I actually enjoyed my OS back then and MX gave me that feeling back. Thanks, MX Team

Help request Cannot boot into Live USB

Upvotes

I have an HP ENVY Desktop PC TE01-2000i (1K4E9AV). I have Secure Boot enabled. I want to keep Secure Boot enabled.

I downloaded the MX Linux KDE version. Upon booting into the USB, I select the systemd choice. I get an immediate error of EFI: Failed to meaure data for event. I cannot even get into the live disk to install.

Generally speaking, on other versions of Linux, like Mint, I have had to add noapic to get live disks started, maybe due to having an NVidia card? Once I have installed the distro AND then installed the NVidia drivers, I can remove noapic and it will generally start. With Fedora I had no issues whatsoever with Secure Boot after following Nvidia driver instructions. I did have issues with Wayland, in particular with game controllers, I guess due to some restrictions within Wayland.

With Linux Mint, I was able to install, but had frequent issues when rebooting. It generally would start on a cold start, but always got stuck if I tried reboot. Once inside it ran perfectly well, just some kind of hardware issues, I assume, on reboot. This HP tower seems to have endless hardware issues with Linux. It has an 11th gen I7-11700 Intel CPU, an Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU. I wonder about that one as it says (Lite hash rate) on linux. It is supposed to be some kind of anti-mining thing they added to it. Would that cause these issues?

According to this link: https://eathealthy365.com/the-rtx-3060-mining-limiter-the-full-story-in-2026/

Quote: The restriction was a technology NVIDIA called “Lite Hash Rate” or LHR. It was a combination of firmware, driver, and GPU BIOS checks designed to detect the specific workload of Ethereum (ETH) mining and cut the card’s performance—its “hash rate”—in half.

It's that combination of firmware, driver and GPU BIOS checks that maybe causes issues?

What can I do to even test out this KDE version? I did try adding noapic to the systemd selection, but it just got stuck at the above error.

Any help appreciated.

Review So I think I made a good decision today.

For the longest time I have been running my thinkpad with a windows/Ubuntu dual boot. I finally chose to cut both windows and ubuntu completely loose from my 3d printing setup and try something new. MX is running smooth as hot butter and I am enjoying playing around with KDE plasma also. I'm loving the whole experience so far and should probably get off of here and tinker around some more. I just want to thank the developers for creating such a gem of a distro.

Help request Touchpad not working - Lenovo IdeaPad 120s-14IAP

Upvotes

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong subreddit to ask. But my touchpad on the Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-14IAP doesn't seem to be working, is there any fix for this perhaps?

I think it is an Elan touchpad or similar. It does work on Linux Mint XFCE (hope it is okay to mention, sorry if not), but I would really like to use MX Linux.

Sorry and have a great day! :D

Help request Issue creating live usb with persistence.

Upvotes

Just a knoob. I have a 2017 i5 MacBook Air that is running MX KDE. This weekend I was playing around trying to find the best way to create a live USB with persistence. YUMI usbs fail to load and mkusb so far won’t install, says repository not found.
I don’t know if it’s a hardware and OS issue. The only usb with persistence i was able to create were Puppy Linux and antiX using MX Live USB. My question would be, is there a program out there that will work on my system?

Blog Fresh Install on an old Inspiron

Upvotes

Hi all! I am writing you from my fresh MX Linux install on an old Dell Inspiron my dad had gotten me a few years ago.

The laptop model is a Dell Inspiron P24T001. It's from 2017. I used it extremely lightly, but before long it could barely load a webpage while running windows, and I left it for years. I left it so long the cmos battery died and I had to get a new one.

I replaced the battery and installed MX and it's working like a charm. I'm listening to a youtube video in another tab as I write this! That would've been impossible before.

So, I just wanted to say hi, and share my new experience. Please let me know if there is anything more I can/should do with this laptop, or any next steps projects, etc.

Thanks!

Screenshot Moved my 2015 chromebook from Chrome OS over to MX Linux! (First time Linux user)

Upvotes

I recently found an old Chromebook lying around and decided I would like to use it as a lightweight web browser/terminal playground by flashing the Mrchromebox firmware and replacing Chrome OS entirely with MX Linux (XFCE). Device in question is a 2015 Acer C740, it has 4gb RAM, a dual-core Celeron 3205U, and 16gb of m.2 SATA storage. Surprisingly upgradeable, the storage can be increased, the wifi card can be upgraded, there is even an i3 variant of this same board, though I don't know if I would invest too much into this laptop. As stated in the title, this is my first time using linux, I am enjoying it so far, got some nice looking icons and theming for XFCE, had to get into the terminal for the first time ever, pretty fun!
