Excessive consumption of this chocolate pudding may have a laxative effect, but apparently only in Malaysia…
•
u/mrgoldnugget 21h ago
They only needed to legally tell you about it in Malaysia.
•
u/Sombracuriosa 20h ago
The real horror isn't the laxative effect. It's that Malaysia gets the warning and the rest of us get the surprise.
•
u/hskskgfk 19h ago
The rest of us are all constipated and would benefit from excessive consumption of chocolate pudding laxative
•
u/diescheide 21h ago
Are they the only country that requires that labeling? Does it contain sugar alcohols? Maltitol or sorbitol? Those can cause gastric upset.
•
u/BackgroundTourist653 20h ago
Lactose. That region of Asia is generally less tolerant to lactose.
•
u/diescheide 20h ago
That's just silly. It's because of the artificial sweeteners. Someone explained it in another comment.
•
•
u/ShinyBonnets 20h ago
Lactose isn’t a sugar alcohol, it is a sugar found in milk.
•
u/Fast_Illustrator_281 19h ago
He didn’t state that though, did he?
•
u/diescheide 19h ago
He replied with completely unnecessary information. You only have to declare additives.
Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk. Artificial or alcohol sugars are additives that can cause gastric upset. Those have to be declared.
•
u/Fast_Illustrator_281 18h ago
That is a valid comment that adds to the discussion. However, the one I replied to wasn’t as much.
•
u/ShinyBonnets 19h ago
Did you read the entire thread? The comment he responded to asked if there was any sugar alcohol, and he replied ’Lactose’, which is wrong.
Work on your reading comprehension skills, my guy.

It contains erythritol and food regulations in Malaysia require that warning because of it.
Excessive use will have this effect with everyone, it's just that the warning is only required there.
In addition to the sweetening substances specified in regulations 118 to 133 only aspartame, glycerol, isomalt, maltitol, maltitol syrup, mannitol, sorbitol, sucralose, erythritol and xylitol shall be deemed to be a permitted sweetening substance for the purposes of these Regulations.
....
There shall be written in the label on a package containing food to which the sweetening substances in subregulation (1) have been added the words "Excessive use can have laxative effect".
Notwithstanding subregulation (5), food containing aspartame and sucralose are exempted from this labeling requirement.

Whenever I see a warning like this it makes me think of cake decorator directions gone wrong.
Like they weren't supposed to print that part except in Malaysia

As a dane I didnt even know Arla was in Australia or Malaysia. Is it their Protein pudding? If so. eating 3 of those will have a laxative effect.
•
u/SinuousPanic 16h ago
I'm a Kiwi, I had to look it up as I've never seen them before, though I don't usually buy supermarket deserts either. It looks like it's not the protein pudding, but the vanilla cookie flavour. They've conveniently left that part of the packaging out of the product pictures though...
Edit - actually it is still a protein pudding, it's just not titled as such, but it does say it on the packaging.

Arla butter and cheeses are available here in Malaysia, but I've never noticed Arla puddings before. Now I want to go look for it.

Might be the milk content? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think some Asian populations are far more lactose intolerant.
•
u/Savings_Language_498 21h ago
This will probably be because of the artificial sweeteners, not the lactose
•
u/lurkeemclurker 20h ago
Where is the ingredient list or do you just recognize this brand from the coloring?
•
u/indieplants 20h ago
it's arla chocolate protein pudding, they probably can tell by the branding on the label
•
u/lurkeemclurker 20h ago
There were a lot of distributors listed on the back. Did not realize one was also umbrella branding the pudding was using as well.
For anyone wondering this is the ingredient list: Low-fat cow’s milk, cow's milk protein, sweeteners (E968 (30,000 mg/kg), E960a (99 mg/kg)), fat-reduced cocoa powder 1.8%, apple concentrate, thickener agent (E407, E412), natural chocolate flavouring, acidity regulators (E450iii, E451ii, E450v, E451i), lactase, salt
And I believe erythitol (“e968”) is the artificial sweetener causing the trigger for the warning.

Common side effect of artificial sweeteners and protein stuff often has it
•
u/mmavacado 17h ago
this is how i remember arla is still a company that works outside of finland (is it the same arla?)
•
•
u/trapbuilder2 19h ago
I like this brand of pudding, though the chocolate one is a bit meh. I recommend the salted caramel or vanilla.
•
•
•
•
u/Anxious_Status_5103 1h ago
Because it has the artificial sweeteners. We stopped buying arpa protein puddings and just spend the extra money for the ones with actual sugar. The sugar tax here in Finland is OBNOXIOUS
•
u/gcstr 20h ago
I eat these quite often and only fart a lot. Never got diarrhea. The salted caramel is quite tasty.

Malaysia might have a "California-like" law for lactose containing foods.
Edit: apparently they do have such a law, but it's for Erythritol in this case.
•
•
u/Nuggyfresh 21h ago
I mean it’s not that hard- they’re saying the ingredient list for the Malaysian market version contains an ingredient that can have a laxative effect. They get economies of scale by using the same packaging in every market, so they simply note that for the Malaysian market instead of creating a different container just for that region.
For the record it’s usually sugar alternatives that cause this effect.
•
u/whatshamilton 21h ago
I see no indication that they’re different products in different countries. These are the importers and distributors of the finished products. Not manufacturers where they might have different formulations. Most likely it’s different local requirements of disclosure, like the number of things that say may cause cancer in California. It’s because only California requires the disclosure
•
u/assmang1point0 21h ago
i suspect anything you eat in Malaysia may have a laxative effect tbh
•
•
u/assmang1point0 15h ago
you people and your downvotes make
me laugh. i love Malaysia. where's your sense of humour?•

•
u/lndig0__ 21h ago
This will also cause cancer but only if you are within the borders of California.
