Small oysters, called spat, are started in a smaller cage, then about 6months they get bigger. They are put into these subaquatic cages that protect the oysters from predators (fish, otters, birds). This allows them to grow bigger. Because of this, the Chesapeake Bay region is littered with Oyster farms that use these cages. I call them coffins, cuz they look dark and foreboding.
