The ‘Long Island experience’ people talk about here is really only half of Long Island.
This sub treats LI like one shared experience, same traffic complaints, same pizzeria debates. But this is one of the more segregated suburban regions in the country, and nobody talks about it.
Hempstead and Garden City share a literal border, and the two sides look like different towns. A 2019 EdBuild study found Glen Cove and North Shore Central, bordering districts, have a per pupil spending gap over $12,000 a year. Glen Cove is around 72% nonwhite compared to 20% for its neighbor, and Hempstead’s district is roughly 2% white while Rockville Centre next door is around 77% white. Roosevelt and Wyandanch have been flagged as underfunded compared to their neighbors since the 90s.
Take someone from Terrace Ave in Hempstead and someone from a street 15 minutes away in Garden City. Same commute, same ZIP code radius, completely different story about what their town is like day to day
the fact that you can have kids rolling up to high school in brand new cars and parents with boats in one town, while adults a few miles over are relying entirely on the bus and dealing with completely different economic ceilings. It’s the sheer scale of the contrast right next door to each other that defines the whole place.
The history isn’t subtle either. Levittown’s original lease restricted homes to “members of the Caucasian race.” The developer kept Jewish buyers out too, despite being Jewish himself. That stuck around even after the Supreme Court ruled it unenforceable in 48. Not ancient history, same housing, same district lines, still standing today.
Even how people react to you changes based on what town you say you’re from. Say Roslyn, one reaction. Say Brentwood, a different one, before they know anything else about you.
All of this traces back to zoning and district lines drawn decades ago, tied straight to property tax.
Why doesn’t the contrast between all these neighboring realities ever get talked about here?
Edit: there’s much more I could say on this, but I’ll leave it here for now. Thank you to the users who provided their own data as well. This is an important discussion!
& to the “it’s the same everywhere!” Crowd. It’s not, there is plenty of data (not feelings or anecdotal evidence) to show that Long Island is a more extreme outlier.

Advice How to get rid of all these field crickets in my garage?
I put two of these traps in my garage last night. In under 24 hours this was the result. Is this just a temporary solution or if I keep putting more traps will they eventually all be gone?

Advice Brace yourself now to pay for home oil this winter.
Just looked and the prices now are 60% more than I paid this January, 20% more than the highest I've ever paid in 15 years, and probably going to get worse from here still. Good luck everybody.

New color for NCPD vehicles?
All back with dark grey lettering on the side. Saw the same colors on an SUV for highway patrol on the LIE. From the front looks like a normal TLC regular car.

LI History Map of Long Island 1884
Got this big guy printed and framed. Colton’s 1884 map of Long Island, highlighting the LIRR lines. Map also shows pre-NYC consolidation county and town borders (including the incorporated cities of Brooklyn and Long Island City), pre-annexation of the towns making up the Bronx, and pre-split of Nassau County from Queens.

Question Is Long Island a boring place?
I'm not trying to be rude, I promise. Because of my father's job, our family is being relocated to the US, and one of the possible locations is the suburbs of New York.
So, I curiously went to check it out and ended up on Long Island. I saw many comments here and on the internet saying that Long Island is boring, but from what I saw it seems like a bustling city. Not NYC style, but it doesn't look like a tiny town where everything closes at 10 pm.
I want you all to share your experiences, both about Long Island and other suburbs of New York, please :D

Fireworks and drone show ruined
Went to the Point Lookout end of summer celebration again this year. Always a fun after-the-beach concert with Mike DelGuidice, food trucks, bouncy houses, and then it finishes off with fireworks and a drone show.
This year, it was impossible to see the show as the two giant LED screens, flanking the main stage, kept showing an American Flag gif on repeat at, what appeared to be, a 395% brightness setting.
We get it. It's America's 250th, we don't need it jammed down our throat. Anyway, I was really looking forward to the fireworks as they really do a great job, and this year was combo'd WITH the drone show. Just wish I could have seen it. Instead, I went to bed that night with the flag-flapping-in-the-wind animation cooked into my retinas.

Disabled LIRR ticket
For the first time today the conductor asked to see my card? When I showed my purchased disabled reduced fare ticket. I have never been asked before for it. I am a disabled person, but do not qualify for government assistance as I am right now. She said I needed a red, white and blue social security card or a reduced fare subway card. Even affording going to the city is pushing it right now and I am only doing it to finish school in the city. What should I do?

Riverhead LIRR station parking
My girlfriends and I are planning a weekend bachelorette in Riverhead. Our Airbnb has a late check in and we’re trying to find somewhere to meet and park our cars for 4-5 hours while we uber to vineyards. Do you think the riverhead LIRR station parking lot is a safe bet? From what I can find online it is free and no time restrictions? This would be on a Saturday around 11am. Any advice is welcome!

Looking For Tailor in Suffolks for Mens Suit Alterations?
Looking for a tailor in Suffolk to work on a couple suits I'm trying to have tapered to a more modern fit.
Seems it's growing increasingly hard to find quality alterations for menswear out here these days.

Best place for crabbing on Long Island? 🦀
Looking for recommendations for a good place to go crabbing on Long Island, preferably somewhere with easy public access and parking.
I’m mainly interested in blue crabs or mud crabs and would appreciate recommendations for specific docks, piers, or marinas. Nassau or Suffolk is fine.

I have very specific measurements I need for a sectional, not just length and width but the height of the back which seems to be harder to customize. Anyone have experience with places that make these that are good quality?

Pretty event space that doesn’t break the bank?
I’m Looking for ideas of event spaces for my bridal shower.
We’ll be using a company that sets up a tea party so I’m looking for a space that will allow us to bring in our own food/drinks.
Details:
- Some place pretty. A garden type area or something with pretty views of nature/the ocean/etc
- Approx 80-90 guests. Willing to cut this down if we can’t find an affordable option
- Okay with either Nassau or western Suffolk, don’t want to go far out east
- March or April
