Its all fun and games until you actually have to play Crash Course
•
u/Financial_Ocelot_256 2d ago
There is only one i don't play: Cold stream
shitty ass endings for all parts, how am i supposed to beat the infinite horde behind me and a tank in front of me while my bots are as intelligent as a rat in Halo 3.
•
u/Professional_Device9 2d ago
Hey, don't compare them to the rats! They didn't do anything wrong!
(The rats.)
•
u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs 🧢 Yeahhh, I always wanted to be an axe murderer! 🪓 2d ago
I don't mind level 1 and 2 for Cold Stream but the finale is just ridiculous. So many custom campaigns don't understand "infinite horde" just isn't interesting gameplay design
Also would it have killed them to use a different helicopter? News Chopper 5 is such an iconic part of No Mercy and it's really weird to see it reused, especially in an "official" campaign. Could they really not have just recorded a handful of extra lines of dialogue and used the texture from Dark Carnival? I know Cold Stream isn't canon, but still.
•
u/Asleep_Stable_8092 2d ago
The guy who made Cold Stream was specifically told by Valve to not create new assets and reuse what the game already had.
•
u/Iizvullok 2d ago
Really? Why that?
•
u/Jaiz412 steamcommunity.com/id/RealJaiz/ 2d ago edited 1d ago
From Valve's Blogpost:
The very first step in creating a new DLC is deciding on the larger goals and constraints for the DLC. The Sacrifice and the Passing were story heavy, so we want to see what the other end of the spectrum looks like. For this DLC we start with wanting to experiment by releasing a map pack that wasn’t about story. It would just be new campaigns for Left 4 Dead 2.
That makes the first constraint no new audio or story. It specifically mentions "No new audio or story", rather than "no new assets in general" though, but the idea does reasonably extend to explain the limited use of new models and textures.
•
u/Shadowysn 2d ago
Unconfirmed talk I saw around somewhere was that the creator initially used copyrighted custom assets that presented a problem for putting in a commercial game, but don't quote me on this as someone else lurking here would likely know better than me on Cold Stream. This is just a faint memory for me.
•
u/Iizvullok 2d ago
With the adrenaline that spawns with a high likelyhood in the boat after the waterfall.
•
u/ASHLEYKHAOZ ellis SUPERFAN!!! 2d ago
cold stream is kinda a mess but it’s sooo pretty and that alone always makes me come back to it
•
u/midasMIRV 2d ago
I played cold stream a couple times when it first released, then never again cause I assumed it was an unfinished demo campaign.
•
u/mario610 2d ago
Don't forget the instant death waterfall in 1 level, I remember finding out once that you can still get washed away while downed which is even shittier on top of the fucking infinite horde shit
•
•
u/indialexjones 2d ago
I actually don’t really like dead center all that much, I personally would rate basically every other l4d2 campaign higher than it. Especially dark carnival which is my favourite.
•
u/NessaMagick Tits! 2d ago
Yeah, I think Dead Center is the weakest L4D2 campaign. The second chapter is way too long for what is essentially still part of the tutorial and it's got an icky scavenge finale.
•
u/Moonlands 2d ago
I'm not the biggest fan of Dead Center all of the way, but its also some of the most interesting, and plus the gun shop is cool since I can basically be certain to pick up my favorite weapon combos of Sniper Rifle laser sight and Deagle, or SPAS-12 (Combat Shotgun) and Deagle, maybe a melee weapon and Sniper Rifle if I don't mind having a weak pistol if downed.
Its not the best, but it is one of the more interesting with the Finale. I'd place it like a solid B tier personally.
•
u/BaseForward8097 2d ago
I agree. Dead Center has a rather weak Ch1 (it feels too much like a dragged out tutorial) and I dislike the ending (mostly due to skill issue, but still)
•
u/SheridanWithTea 2d ago
If you skip Dead Center chapter 1, it's actually quite fun. Just the first chapter is really boring.
•
u/Draws32 Xbox One 2d ago
Dark carnival is absolute cheeks for infected side of versus. The last level has like 8 med packs, multiple pain pills, 4 adrenaline shots, throwables and a grenade launcher. Not to mention there’s no where to consistently spawn near them when they go to the right spot. Your best chance is to get a lucky hit with the forklift as the tank and even then with the two defibrillators it’s almost impossible to stop any half decent team that sticks together.
It’s dog shit.
•
u/NessaMagick Tits! 2d ago
If you're talking vanilla versus, it's almost impossible to stop a half-decent team that sticks together on any finale.
•
u/Draws32 Xbox One 2d ago
Nah, on No mercy the rooftop plays are open on any team. They have to go up a latter and the infected can spawn on top of them. The tank can knock a survivor off of building and get an unrecoverable death. Same on like parish finale with the bridge there’s multiple death charge spots.
IMO the game can heavily favor the survivor side, so the instant and unrecoverable death zones help balance it out. Love dead center round one, no mercy round 4 and 5.
•
u/NessaMagick Tits! 2d ago
Yeah, but if they don't fall for the obvious bait, then you're pretty much screwed because vanilla versus is so survivor-sided.
•
u/PersonaInsane 2d ago
I'm taking an Expert Realism journey. Crash acourse scares the hell out of me.
•
u/King_chungus212 2d ago
Wait til you have to do last stand ☠️
•
u/Gaming_with_batman Keith 2d ago
That one is worse cause you have to do it to get the achievement.
I got it though abusing left 4 bots 2, grenade spam, and sheer dumb luck•
u/King_chungus212 2d ago
Last stand is def bad but now that im thinking about it more i had way more trouble with hard rain expert than last stand
•
u/Helpful_Wasabi_4782 1d ago
I also had to use the left 4 bots mod to get that achievement. The difference between normal bots and modded bots is coloured and b&w
•
u/SheridanWithTea 2d ago
Try the Parish. Never again....
•
u/Faltzy 2d ago
the parish on expert realism isn't that bad, especially when the finale can be rushed easily
•
u/SheridanWithTea 2d ago
OH yeah? Like to see you try with a friend while you're both sleep deprived and half drunk at 3 AM.
Not a good time, Mr. left 4 Dead 2 Expert of 8,000 Hours.........
•
u/thelocalpotatogamer 2d ago
Dark carnival was nasty for me. Swamp fever was suprisingly pleasant though, i enjoyed it
•
•
•
u/Theoneandonlyzander 2d ago
Imma be so real, when playing casually with friends, I despise both of the first campaigns. Now, neither of them are bad, but I hate Dead Centers 3rd and 4th chapters, as well as No Mercy's 4th. With all of this said, my 2 favorite Campaigns are Death Toll and Hard Rain, so say what you will.
•
u/JoeJoeJoeJoeThrow 2d ago
Hard Rain is amazing. Like it’s one of those things I think about randomly from time to time, when I think about top gaming moments. Retracing your path back to the boat in a huge storm with everything flooding is just….amazing
•
u/Theoneandonlyzander 2d ago
Fr! I love the way Hard Rain works, and I adore the environmental story telling, with the Huricane force winds and rain.
•
u/Zardoo 2d ago
Death Toll is probably the best campaign of the entire game both L4D1 and 2. I love it so much
•
u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs 🧢 Yeahhh, I always wanted to be an axe murderer! 🪓 2d ago
Death Toll is my favorite in the entire series as well. The atmosphere and variety is great, the Church is a fantastic encounter, and the level design and visuals of the roads, town, and boat house are all top tier
•
u/SheridanWithTea 2d ago
Bro really enjoys having only pistols and melee for an entire chapter??? And wading through high water and backtracking through existing levels.
•
u/Theoneandonlyzander 2d ago
Which campaign's chapter has only pistols and Melee? Cause in the ones I described they dont. Dead Center's frist chapter is that, which is another reason I dislike it. As far as the wading through water goes, most of Hard Rains return route is built around not being the water. Rooftops, pipework in the Sugar Mill. Legit just sounds to me like you've never played Hard Rain.
•
u/Denleborkis 2d ago
I mean the only campaign I outright don't like is Cold Stream the rest of them are more than fun even if they get a little aggravating.
The only other campaign that I can think of that I really don't like is Dark Carnival and its mostly just because of the fact that on high difficulties the endings of the levels are slogs and trying to beat them on Extreme was the biggest pain in the balls of any campaign in the game and I would never so that shit again.
•
u/Brislovia 2d ago
I always try to find the Boomer Bile on Dark Carnival 1st and save it so I can use it on the final part of 4th, that part is brutal
•
u/Faust_the_Faustinian Melees are better than pistols 2d ago
Once we died like 15 times in the gauntlet of Dark Carnival with a team of randoms on Expert Realism until we finally beat it.
•
•
u/shadowapolo 2d ago
Even with some campaigns being too short or not having many unique ideas, I still quite like all of them besides Cold Stream. Playing custom campaigns will make you appreciate even the worse vanilla campaigns.
•
•
•
u/Nuclearstomp 2d ago
Crash Course is pretty solid in my opinion, it just really needed to be a three mapper or at least cut out the lead up to the finale area.
•
u/Helpful_Wasabi_4782 1d ago
That's the exact reason why I don't like Crash Course, if you die at the second wave or tank during finale you have to start all the way back from the safe room, that is very far away from the finale
•
•
•
•
u/Background-Horse-141 2d ago
I know I'm wrong, everyone has told me, but I fucking love Hard Rain. Running back through rain so thick you can't see or hear the witches till it's too late makes me feel alive.
•
u/Raven-Purple 2d ago
Crash Course is a good campaign because you can easily get a achievement for beating a Campaign on Expert mode
Also stop listening to Youtubers telling what you should and shouldn’t like and form your own opinions
•
u/JustAFellowOnTheWeb 2d ago
Mercy hospital just has that dreadful feeling of being stuck in a highly populated city, overran with infected. The sets are amazing, especially the scene where you get out of the sewer to see Mercy Hospital. The environmental story telling is also what makes it great as well.
•
u/Game_Bread 2d ago
This reminds me. For most of my life playing L4D2, i hated the Parish. I used to think that the level design was very bland and just a chore to get through. Now, though (more specifically, the last few years) Ive come to enjoy is as one of my more recent favorites! The storytelling, the aesthetic, the soundtrack, are all superb! Not to mention the character interactions with the environments and with each other.
•
u/JoeJoeJoeJoeThrow 2d ago
Come to think of it, with how little stuff Valve makes in general, why does Crash Course even exist? Like why did they put the effort in to make it when they’re normally super lethargic?
•
u/Asleep_Stable_8092 2d ago
When Crash Course was added Valve said they created it to be a "bite sized versus round" using cut areas and levels or something like that.
It's intentionally shorter so people don't have to dedicate to 1-2 hour sessions like other campaigns.
•
u/JoeJoeJoeJoeThrow 2d ago
I see. Thanks both of you. It does feel a bit like an ‘eh’ map. Still, I’m glad they both exist. It’s nice to have shorter campaigns.
•
u/lukewarmboy 2d ago
Crash Course and The Sacrifice are mostly recycled scrapped maps made by Turtle Rock Studios. The Passing might be the only add-on campaign that was fully developed by Valve, and honestly, that might be why it feels more polished than the other 2 atleast to me.
•
•
u/Inomata098 2d ago
Hard rain solos both frfr
•
u/Immediate-Clock-816 2d ago
I mess with hard rain but swamp fever my personal favorite. The vibe and horde music are my favorites
•
u/Sukaiba69 Jockey on ma' back! 2d ago
The only one I audibly "Ugh" at is Cold Stream because the pacing is awful all-throughout, always the same Tank experience and no Witches
I appreciate Crash Course mostly as a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the Campaigns for how unconventional it is
Also as long as you're not alone, Scavenge is the most fun finale type and I will not hear otherwise
•
•
u/Shiva9990 2d ago
Or dead air. Everyone loves dead air.
I personally like all the maps (except cold stream. Can’t really put my finger on why exactly. Just not my thing I guess)
•
•
u/deepspacerunner 2d ago
I’ve had hype moments and aura on all of the campaigns. One that sticks out is Swamp Fever’s plantation finale, my two teammates were too cowardly to get off the boat so I popped some adrenaline, reloaded my shotgun and soloed a Tank to rescue my incapped teammate
•
•
u/shyguyshow 2d ago
Replace Dead Center with Dark Carnival. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely one of the best campaigns but i’m sooo bored of playing Dark Carnival over and over
•
u/MegaPrOJeCtX13 Nick main 2d ago
Dark Carnival will forever be my go-to just because the modding potential. My last stand could be to Gorillaz, Daft Punk, Hideki Naganuma, Pink Guy…
•

•
u/notengoganasdepensar 2d ago
The only map i can't seem myself to enjoy is blood harvest. The other one is dead air.
•
u/TheWalkingHunk 2d ago
The atmosphere for CC makes me like it all the same.
It's not bad to beat, but a broken team does ruin the run.
•
u/ParsnipNo9171 2d ago
No Mercy and Dead Center are just so fun especially in Versus.
No better feeling than charging a survivor off the building..
•
u/TheMemeLord4816 2d ago
There's an advanced ai mod that has the ais go in the direction you're supposed to go if you stand still for a bit
I rely on them so much because I get lost so often

u/golygu I am the hunter 2d ago edited 2d ago
Crash course feels a little underwhelming for me But I absolutely love playing Dark Carnival (and the remix) purely because I love the atmosphere and the thrill of running the gauntlet of map 3 And I basically never play hard rain map 3 and 4 by taking shortcuts, I LOVE the feeling of slowly walking through the flood and hard rain
•

•
u/Educational-West6968 2d ago
I really can't understand why so many people like no Mercy .It is way too dark to be fun like almost every original left 4 dead campaign. The darkness doesn't make the game scarier. It just makes it annoying
•
u/Iizvullok 2d ago
It is not that dark tho (except maybe some parts). You probably have to fix your graphics settings.
•
•
u/White_C4 2d ago
The 2nd and 3rd chapters of Dead Center are great, but everything else does get boring on repeat.
•
•
u/ReadableDiction 2d ago
I don’t like No Mercy. I don’t dislike either but I’d rather join a Swamp or Hard Rain mid Versus match than a NM lobby.
•
•
u/charbway 2d ago
i don't think i've ever met anyone that doesn't like dark carnival
•
u/Jaiz412 steamcommunity.com/id/RealJaiz/ 2d ago
I never liked Dark Carnival because the events are pointlessly overtuned and the finale is boring to play.
The 4th map isn't just the worst event in the game, it isn't even properly signposted, and the finale is by far the least engaging finale in the entire game due to how easy it is.I also hate how disappointing it is thematically; It's supposed to be a theme park turned into a refugee center, but there's almost nothing lending itself to that theme. It would've been far more interesting to see it militarized and inhabited.
•
u/Faust_the_Faustinian Melees are better than pistols 2d ago
Idk what you're talking about, dude.
Blood Harvest and The Parish are my favorites.
•
u/Generaldoom93 i love m16 modded and the shotgun 2d ago
The one thing i dont like really is swamp fever, like whats the purpose of it when it slows you down and a slow gameplay and seems boring in speedruns and etc
•
u/SimplyTiredd 2d ago
Crash Course just feels like bad pacing, but I love every other map.
(Except cold stream fuck that map)
•
•
u/Hex_Coded 2d ago
Dead Center is good as a tutorial to get you into the groove of the game, but I feel it has a very small replay value, I much more prefer Hard Rain as a campaign to keep coming back to
•
•
u/Bahldros 2d ago
Swamp slows you down, Hard rain you cant see shit AND slows you down, crash course is over quickly
•
u/Naoto_for_life18 2d ago
Blood harvest, cold stream and swamp fever are the only campaigns I avoid like a plague
•
u/hulloiliketrucks 2d ago
Granted im a casual but i like all of the maps, barring maybe cold stream. My favorites are Dead Air and The Parish.
•
u/NicoMan88 2d ago
I think i'm genuinely in love with no mercy and blood harvest. But only for solo i rather play other campaigns in versus mode
•
•
u/Snoo48129 2d ago
Swamp fever will always be my favorite campaign. 🤷🏻Dead air and Death toll are also really amazing imo. But I just enjoy left 4 dead in general.
•
•
•
u/Limp-Condition-3380 2d ago
My favorite campaign is death toll, no mercy is top 5 but definitely not my favorite, dead center is one of my least favorite campaigns, if I had to order the campaigns from most enjoyed to least it would be death toll, the parish, no mercy, blood harvest, dark carnival, dead air, swamp fever, the sacrifice, the passing, the last stand, hard rain, dead center, crash course, and cold stream in dead last as my least favorite campaign
•
u/Whole-Drop-4889 2d ago
Complaining about no primary's in Dead Center chapter 1 is a skill issue and No Mercy is perfect from top to bottom and shows you what the rest of the game has to offer.
•
u/Tracula707 2d ago
Is this the common opinion? I don’t even think Dead Center is in the top three Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns
•
u/RafaelTS07 2d ago
nah, Cold Stream is the real stinker here lmfao
that campaign are just not fun for me, especially in Expert
•
•
u/gibsonsayhenlo 2d ago
Huh, am I weird to like Dead Center? I mean it's not as fun as other maps out there. But, I like it...?
•
u/Jetitaka 2d ago
Well if we count Cold Stream as vanilla ig this is true enough. The only Vanilla map i actually dislike is Hard Rain and even it is really good i just don't like how long it is for basically being 3 chapters packed into 5.
Even crash course is more fun imo. Everything else in general is good with the last stand being okay.
•
•
u/foxferreira64 2d ago
Not a single bad vanilla map in this game, I love them all, yes, incluing Hard Rain. Each offers something new, tactics are different as well. My favorite is Dark Carnival though!
•
•
u/Jackpot_The_Raccuki 2d ago
Jokes on you, I enjoy crash course.
Infact I enjoy all vanilla maps, except of course, Cold Stream. Which has some good but honestly so mid a lot of time.
•

I can’t be bothered to do Dead Center most of the time because it’s one of the hardest campaigns in the game. No Mercy goated though

My favorite is still probably Death Toll (for L4D1) or Swamp Fever (for L4D2) but I am 110% biased towards all of the L4D1 maps. Mainly because I frequently visit Pennsylvania and am biased.

u/Leach-8 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dark Carnival and Hard Rain are my favorite vanilla campaigns to play over and over especially with friends!
The Parish comes in third for a number of reasons:
- The Bridge is my second favorite finale.
- The Bridge has a cool climbing trick you can teach friends who are new to the game.
- it's the map they used for the developer commentary, my first window into the world of game development.
Swamp Fever is my least favorite, but I don't hate it. It has one of the funniest intro banters, really stressful crescendo events that I greatly appreciate, and it's where we first meet our boi Virgil.
Dead Center will always be special because it's the only map where I can have a guarantee AK47 + Laser Sights lmao.
I can't say much about L4D1 maps, sadly. Always loved the idea of L4D as a kid (thanks to Kilplix N Friends), but my childhood zombie game was L4D2. I guess when I finally got to play them as an adult Death Toll was my favorite.

•
u/RepresentativeFit44 1d ago
For versus I’ll take this badge with honor but it’s really only versus do I play No Mercy, Dead Center, and Dark Carnival otherwise I don’t really care what I play
I’m by no means a sweat it’s just a little annoying to play the other maps as survivor sometimes because there are ridiculous insta kill/down spots that are pretty easy to hit. Maybe it’s a skill issues since I don’t play them often but the other three maps mentioned are just easier to read for me when an insta kill happens
•
u/Real-Reading2828 1d ago
Whoever made the image committed a crime by not including dark carnival and the parish as well.
The title of the post is me when swamp fever. (Idc what the 6 swamp fever fans gotta say, it's the worst campaign design and gameplay wise, and even the horde theme is ahh)
