The Kurdish people represent one of the largest ethnolinguistic groups in the Middle East. Despite their demographic significance, their genetic origins and phylogenetic relationships remain incompletely characterized. This review synthesizes findings from uniparental genetic markers, HLA allele frequency studies, and ancient genomic analyses to reconstruct the phylogenetic history of Kurdish populations and their relationships with neighboring groups.

The available evidence converges on a model of deep genetic continuity rooted in the Neolithic and Bronze Age populations of the Northern Fertile Crescent and Zagros Mountains. Modern Kurds carry approximately 75–80% indigenous Near Eastern ancestry, with a minor Western Steppe component attributable to Iron Age Indo-Iranian migrations. Uniparental marker analyses are consistent with descent from early Anatolian and Zagrosian farmers, alongside mitochondrial haplogroups H and U reflecting ancient Near Eastern hunter-gatherer and farming substrata. HLA studies place Kurds within a Mediterranean–Middle Eastern genetic cluster, with closest affinities to Iranians, Armenians, and Georgians, and suggest a possible ancestral link to the Hurrian populations of the Bronze Age. Significant intra-Kurdish genetic heterogeneity exists, shaped primarily by geographic isolation and tribal endogamy rather than linguistic boundaries.

These findings refute models of wholesale population replacement by Central Asian migrants and instead support a continuity model in which Indo-Iranianization represented a linguistic and cultural overlay upon a pre-existing indigenous population. The phylogenetic stability of Kurdish populations since at least the Iron Age has important implications for medical genetics, including HLA-associated disease susceptibility and pharmacogenomic applications

The Kurdish National Council's Afrin branch has called on Syria's new authorities to restore original Kurdish names to villages, towns and natural landmarks across the Afrin region, describing decades of changes to geographic names as an attempt to erase Kurdish identity and historical memory.

A council delegation delivered a formal letter to Khairo al-Ali, head of the Afrin region administration, on Sunday, according to a statement published on the council's Facebook page. The appeal called for the restoration of original names for villages, towns, cities, mountains, valleys and rivers in the region.

The council said it wants the process to be overseen by a specialized government committee involving academics and technical experts from Afrin and elsewhere, with names restored in the languages traditionally used by local communities.

It also urged the authorities to address other longstanding grievances, including reversing previous agricultural reform measures in Afrin and returning land and property to what it described as their original owners. The council further called for residents of Afrin and its districts to manage their own political, administrative, economic and security affairs within Syria's new governmental framework and on the basis of equal citizenship.

The appeal traces the dispute over place names to the period before the Baath Party came to power. According to the council, the original names appeared in French administrative records and remained officially recognized from the establishment of the Syrian state through independence on April 17, 1946, and until Syria's union with Egypt in 1958.

The council said authorities during the United Arab Republic period subsequently began a project to Arabize geographic names in Afrin and established a committee for that purpose, although the initiative was not completed before the union ended.

It said the process was revived and expanded after the Baath Party seized power, particularly under Hafez al-Assad. In 1976, authorities reportedly established another committee to implement the Arabization of place names across what Kurds refer to as Western Kurdistan, including Afrin.

According to the council, the committee included Kurdish and Syriac members as well as a representative of the Aleppo Antiquities Directorate. Its work produced a list of replacement names that became official in 1977 under Interior Ministry Decision No. 580.

The decision, the council said, changed the names of 190 villages and towns in the Afrin region. The replacement names were subsequently incorporated into government records, identity documents and road signs.

The council said further changes occurred after armed factions entered Afrin on March 18, 2018, with additional Arabization of village and geographic names.

It portrayed the renaming of places as one element of what it described as a broader state policy aimed at weakening Kurdish identity. The council also cited forced displacement, a disputed census, restrictions affecting students and workers, and arrests among the measures it said had contributed to the erosion of Kurdish collective memory.

To support its historical account, the council cited researcher Abdullah al-Halou, who has argued that pre-Semitic geographic names are particularly widespread in Western Kurdistan. It also quoted Aleppo historian Khair al-Din al-Asadi from his multi-volume Encyclopedia of Comparative Aleppo, saying he had declined an invitation to participate in the Arabization of place names because he considered it an alteration of historical truth.

The council's appeal comes after the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government on Dec. 8, 2024, which it said should provide an opportunity for Syria's new authorities to reconsider policies inherited from the Baath era.

The council called for official recognition of Syria's ethnic, religious and sectarian diversity, saying that although the former government repressed Syrians generally, Kurds had also faced specific forms of discrimination that required redress.

It presented the restoration of original geographic names, property rights and local administration in Afrin as part of a broader effort to address past grievances and establish a political system based on equal citizenship.

The Afrin branch said it submitted its appeal to the regional administration with "utmost appreciation and respect,” framing the initiative as part of what it described as a wider reassessment of Syria's past as the country's new political order develops.

On September 3, 2026, the Silêmanî Criminal Court held a three hour session for the trial of Lahur Şêx Cengî and 11 other co-defendants linked to the 2025 Lalezar armed clashes. During the hearing, six of the co-defendants officially recanted their prior confessions, informing the judge that their statements had been extracted under torture and duress while in detention. Because the court only processed half of the accused and Lahur Şêx Cengî has not yet given his formal testimony, the judge officially adjourned the trial until further notice.
