yea because he wants to do real life Fortnite, he’s just building the map

u/Djayshell93 12h ago

There’s a movie about this… maybe even books preceding those… can’t remember the name…

u/Wizard_of_Ahhj 12h ago

You're not you when you're hungry

u/Skate_faced 11h ago

Hungry? Who doesn't eat before the movies?

What is this, some sort of game to you?

u/Wizard_of_Ahhj 11h ago

I am so motherfather tired of this motherfather hunger in these motherfather games

u/Reasonable-Job4205 9h ago

"Money, hunger, and clothes, all a neighbor knows"

u/tanne_sita_jallua 11h ago

Hungry hungry hippos the movie?!

u/signalscissor 11h ago

There's a fake one in series 1 of the After Party

The OG was a movie called Battle Royale. It’s where hunger games got its idea and all these games literally call it battle Royale mode

Sounds like there’s a lot of hunger for these games.

Imagine if he did make a giant fortnite themed paintball battle arena. Do people still play paintball?

u/SouthFine639 12h ago

I’m willing to bet not as much as Fortnite

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 8h ago

Thats a safe bet. Costs way less and you don't have to leave the house

u/Skate_faced 11h ago

2030 the most fucked up game show ever is gonna drop.

Imma lean how to floss and practice my squats for bagging corpses of my victims! And i ain't gonna build shit.

The kids of today yearn for the games. IRL

if i had money i guess that's what i'd do. plus a little hut in that forest

u/snighetti 12h ago

Agreed. It’s exactly what I’ve always thought I’d do if I won the lottery.

u/SideInitial3961 10h ago

Move to the woods of North Carolina? Then what?

u/Glitter_puke 9h ago

Then not be bothered. It's my greatest ambition to be left alone.

u/brucatlas1 9h ago

I guess build a little hut

u/Chucktayz 8h ago

I’d build a rustic log cabin

u/Exatex 12h ago edited 11h ago

sorry no hut. It is a form of development. That defeats the whole point

u/CryptoCracko 12h ago

The whole point? Really?

u/Exatex 12h ago

yeah, that escalates and suddenly you build castles and rocket launch pads. No huts for you

u/AdamBlaster007 11h ago

Next thing you know you're building space elevators and aerospace domes for intergalactic flight chartering.

→ More replies (1)

u/Re_Cy_Cling 12h ago

Let's stick to cave-like openings in bedrock?

u/CryptoCracko 12h ago

Just one castle bro, I'll put the launch pad in the courtyard too

u/IrishRage42 7h ago

Same. But a bunch of land. Maybe live on a small chunk of it. Donate to my children or the state when I die so it will never be developed.

Oh man is his PR team pushing this old story again

Fuck off Tim

u/DorrajD 12h ago

The amount of alt accounts he has is insane. Only thing missing here is the post mentioning yachts.

u/Hot_Bed_4736 9h ago

idk if this is TIM's alt account, butt...

u/sulris 11h ago

Rich people do this as a tax loophole. They allow you to deduct what the land would have been worth IF DEVELOPED allowing them to basically make up a number out of thin air. Buy land for 5 million. Make up how much it could be worth if developed into a 5 star resort or some dumb shit that probably would t actually be economically viable and get a 230 million dollar tax deduction again your actual income.

I mean… I hope it preserves the planet and all. But meanwhile we are already drowning in shit water and government debt because the rich won’t pay their fair share of taxes.

They do the same thing with art. Buy a painting for 40k. Say it is worth 20 million (have it appraised by “your” appraiser” when donating it to a non-profit museum. And boom. You just saved yourself a shit ton in taxes. But the government expenses didn’t change so really they are off loading tax burden to the middle class which can’t afford to do shit like that.

A decent portion of the high end art and relic trade is just tax evasion.

u/blackteeshirt6 10h ago

That’s not actually how it works. The land isn’t appraised on a made up number of what you could develop there but rather on the value of the acreage and the extractable resources like timber, etc.

u/aww-snaphook 9h ago

Not to mention that he would then have to pay property taxes on the bullshit inflated number every year

u/gereffi 10h ago edited 9h ago

Can you give a source on this? Seems like a misunderstanding that gets pushed in the comments and that people love to repeat.

Like your land isn’t suddenly worth more because you make up a number. Your undeveloped land might have a value based on what the land could be worth, but that number is relevant to what you buy it for. If you bought it on the market dor $5m and list it in your holdings as being worth $230m it’s going to be fraud every time.

Also what’s the tax deduction you get for owning some forests? Google is leading me to believe that if you hire people to maintain the woodlands you may be able to deduct those costs from your taxes, but the value of the woods doesn’t really seem to matter. In fact I’d think that a higher property value would just lead to higher property taxes.

u/DumptruckHeinie 9h ago edited 8h ago

They made it up. Like yeah, it's possible to commit tax fraud like the art example, but they audit a certain percent of those. You and the charitable foundation people risk going to jail for just making up wild numbers in a clearly fictious scheme for write offs. I'm sure it happens sometimes, like all tax fraud. But they're implying it's completely widespread and standard.

u/PM_ME_SAD_STUFF_PLZ 5h ago

You really just made this up huh

u/CalculonsPride 11h ago

Damn, there really is always a catch.

u/Yakubs_2nd_Brain 9h ago

Epic suing Google almost caused them to disable sideloading on Android. Fuck that greed pig Tim Sweeny

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 7h ago

You got that backwards. Google trying to restrict Android more and more was the basis for the lawsuit.

Android is linux based though so it never would succeed. The closed source play store is the primary problem.

u/salamipope 12h ago

im out of the loop, whats he done

u/D-S-S-R 12h ago

shit opinions on every topic that comes along. really one of the guys who would profit immensly getting off twitter

u/martin031990 12h ago

He often ranted against Steam informing customers, if the game they are looking at was created with AI.
Basically, he says that the customer should not be informed what he buys.
Which is a fucking dogshit opinion.

u/DorrajD 12h ago

The best part is he's so pro AI and recently complained how hard game development is due to component shortages do to AI data centers...

Which is it, Timmy?

u/salamipope 10h ago

Oh yeah fuck that lmao. Hopefully he isnt planning on turning the land hes bought into ai centers.

u/Dartonal 3h ago

There are plenty of awful things he's said/pushed for, but this is by far the most outrageous lmao

Believe me, preserving some land isn’t enough to amend all the bad shit he’s done

u/ThomYorkesDroopyEye 11h ago

Ehh given his penchant for AI it wouldn't surprise me if he starts building data centres

u/Acrobatic_Yellow_781 12h ago

Im sure marine research and deep sea research is as valuable as claiming to hold land. Give it few years and its all sold for data centres

u/Iggy_Slayer 12h ago edited 12h ago

I roll my eyes every time this blatant propaganda comes up on reddit.

It's insane to me that someone who is trying to conserve huge swathes of land is also in full support of the massive surge in AI data centers. Maybe he just doesn't want the damage to happen in his own back yard?

u/Suvvri 12h ago

Or maybe he's gonna sell it to whoever wants to build another ai center there

→ More replies (3)

u/mr_glide 11h ago

Sorry, but nah. I'm tired of these people trying to buy their way to likeability.

Whatever you might feel about the act, the problem is that he gets to decide what to spend the money on. Money that, in large proportion, should belong to the taxpayer.

If you're concerned about doing actual good, how about getting behind more progressive taxation, Tim? Oh wait: https://kotaku.com/fornite-boss-slams-billionaire-tax-he-doesnt-seem-to-fu-1847955572

u/Cephalopod3 12h ago

He is still a massive twat though

u/GiveSuccySucc 11h ago

He also thinks ai CP is fine and dandy

u/cultureicon 12h ago

It's so obvious this is the kind of thing you should do if you get filthy rich. The billionaire hoarders are all miserable with broken lives, kids hate them etc.

u/butterfingernails 12h ago

But then they'd be hoarding land......

u/BlueCat9922 12h ago

Hoarding forests that everybody wants to remain forests.

u/puppycat_partyhat 12h ago

When questionable people do good things with obscene money. Egh... silver lining somewhere, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

Would be better if 1, nobody could get that rich and powerful, and 2, nobody destroys entire forests on a whim.

u/BlueCat9922 12h ago

Of course that would be better, but we know that solution isn't viable.

u/NoCherry847 12h ago

Doesn't make him any better of a person. Burn in hell Tim Sweeney.

u/Legitimate_Notice921 10h ago

He must plant a tree for every employee he lays off from his company and replaces with ai

https://giphy.com/gifs/xUNd9Wd8iNaRwGyPCM

u/spiritlegion 10h ago

This is such an old story, Tim sucks and no amount of forest is gonna change that

u/Gendreau113 11h ago

I do think it's cool what he did, but this is the same guy that now heavily advocates Ai. He wil probably turn it into a "EPIC AI DATA CENTER" one day

u/tillybowman 10h ago

he's a billionaire. it's not even 4% of his fortune.

if you make over 100k and spend 3k on a forest, congrats, you're basically tim sweeney.

u/Commercial_Fox_1614 12h ago

That’s not what he’s doing lmao he’s just buying land as an investment

u/No_Twist_678 12h ago

wow what a beautiful place for some nice datacenters!

u/NeonVoidx 12h ago

didn't epic and unreal just introduce unreal 6 which injects a shitload of AI workload into it? lmao

u/Tombstone_Actual_501 5h ago

As ambivalent as I am towards fortnite and what its done to gaming, this is a net positive.

u/redbulls2014 5h ago

Imagine if this guy took all the money he wasted on EGS and bought even more forests lol

u/MtnMaiden 12h ago

"land bank"

Also that land is in very desirable locations. Mountains, valleys, think....private rich subdivisions. that's only a hour from cities.

u/BIRD_OF_GLORY 12h ago

Bet he's gonna clear it and put up data centers

u/luranthe 11h ago

Tim is still a massive knob even if he owns 50,000 acres of wilderness to "protect it." He would build AI data centers on it the instant he had a chance.

u/Skullsandcoffee 12h ago

But is he granting access to it? Or just hoarding it?

u/Ash_Cat_13 12h ago

Blocking logging isn’t always a good thing. Proper forestry practices need to be implemented on land that can use it.

u/MetoSempre20 12h ago

Also forests need to be cleaned regularly or else a fire destroys everythig sooner or later.

u/Ash_Cat_13 12h ago

That’s part of proper forestry practices. Removing those ladder fuels that allow for the fire to jump to the canopy is a must

u/Corporate_Bricktator 12h ago

One of the most profound statements in this area I've heard is, if we don't make eco friendly logging possible in the wealthy nations, then guess where our logs come from????

That's right, places that don't give a shit about modern safe forestry practices and ecosystem protection.

So it's a really important balancing act to make sure we continue here and also do it right.

Yes don’t log it so it burns the whole state down

u/el-gato-volador 12h ago

That's great but wished things like this weren't up to the whim of billionaires. Cause in 10years there's nothing stopping him from just turning this all into a data center or strip mall. I'm just against one dude owning so much of the planet.

u/ilovemybaldhead 11h ago

Hopefully his wealth will enable him to counter bribe the politicians who spearhead the effort to take the land via eminent domain to clear the land for urgently needed data centers.

Edit: after reading some of the other comments calling him out as a supporter of AI,  it seems like he might build data centers on that land himself.

u/Ryanshaw481 10h ago

not the tim sweeney propaganda 😭😭

u/Psycho-DK 10h ago

Stop posting this while Epic games is so deep into AI that less than one of their data centers cancels out what saving this forest did for the environment.

u/RT10HAMMER 6h ago

It's a very near 0 chance that this is a good faith thing, we just don't get the satanic billionaire view

u/supermariozelda 6h ago

This is something a lot of companies do to try and claim they're offsetting their carbon emissions. They buy up acres of wilderness that were already at extremely low risk of logging for dirt cheap.

u/bigmanbananas 1h ago
