Lol one time I had to go up on a roof of a 3 story building that was literaly falling apart and the roof was made from sheet metal on rotten planks, i was tasked with standing on said roof wich  was visably moving up and down as you steped on it and holding a heavy ass grain pipe while the other guy tried to fit it into another one and then thighten the screws holding it. Greate times,  who needs a harness anyway

There's a mathematical explanation. Throwing/dropping the brick from a certain position makes it impossible to hit the closest wall. You can see the guy duck to the closest wall each time.

Additionally, in a chamber with no wind the brick will be the loudest sound even while it is moving through the air. So the guy has a few seconds of reaction time even before he is in danger.
