when I was young, like way pre-internet, I read somewhere that if you feel your hair getting static-y in a storm, you're about to get struck and should present your anus to the gods. the reason being so the electricity has easy ingress (your butthole) and egress (your face hole)

You're supposed to get low, feet close together minimizing ground contact to try and keep the bolt from going thru your legs, and get to shelter if you can while staying low (not trees). Your idea would have the bolt go straight through your spine, heart, and probably brain

This is actually true but in reverse. You're supposed to open your mouth to the sky in defiance to Zeus, and with your fingers pressed to your thumb in the shape of an O, motion linearly with your hand to your mouth to invite the lightning into your body. Do this while squatting with your ass sticking out for the optimal angle for lightning to shoot out your anus after it passes through your digestive tract and disperse harmlessly into the ground below and behind you. Fun story: Our condo was hit by lightning, it struck a tv antenna and traveled down the cord to my bedroom where the cord was run over a power outlet. My wall exploded and I could step from my bedroom into our upstairs bathroom tub.
I had left the room like two minutes earlier and was downstairs with our cat. When it hit the entire house shook and he froze in place with his claws dug in looking me dead in the eye like I was supposed to do something.
Didn't realize it had actually hit us and a few minutes later the smoke alarms went off upstairs, went up and discovered an exploded wall.

Be not the tallest thing out there and get to cover asap (in a house, or a car) if you can't do that.. Crouch down, don't lay flat! and drop anything metal you might be wearing, but try to keep moving out of that area if possible.
Oh and cover your ears in case lightning does strike near you.
But honestly just don't be in that situation. Stay aware of weather predictions whenever and wherever you go hiking, before you hike out there.

It's about protecting the heart, if you lay flat current may fine it easier to spread out by traveling through your body and consequently past the heart, proper form is to crouch WITH YOUR FEET TOGETHER so when lightning tries to spread out along the ground it goes just through your feet

The current from the impact sites travels through the ground. If you lay flat on the ground and are close enough, some of that current could choose to travel through your body, because it has less resistance than the ground. If you crouch down und put your feet close together, there is no, or at least a lot less, current going through you bc you don't provide a shorter path for it to go anywhere it wants to go.

By crouching, you theoretically minimize the path that lightning takes through your body as it flows into the ground. If you lay flat, the lightning branches out and spreads through your body with more distribution, resulting in more damage. Essentially, you wanna be a very short lightning rod to direct it into the ground
Real talk though? It’s useless. Doesn’t significantly impact your chance of survival and isn’t recommended anymore. Basically you just want to not be the tallest thing around, and don’t be near other tall things. Don’t be under or too close to trees or other people. Lightning travels through the ground, so you wanna be spread out so that at least some people don’t get impacted

I can remember a few times it has happened. Once when I was a kid with friends and we were all pointing at each other's heads, right after a storm. Another time I know it happened when I was at a beach and a storm was approaching the shore. And I feel like it's occurred a few other times. I just spend a lot of time outside and my state has thunderstorms. I've never been struck. Actually the closest I was to being struck (from a huge lightning bolt when I got stuck outside during a storm at the amusement park Cedar Point), my hair was perfectly normal.
I'm not saying it's safe when your hair is standing up. Absolutely your risk of getting struck goes way up. But people are posting here like it's a definite sign you are going to get struck, which simply isn't true.

Depends if you are in the cone of protection from something metal. In a forest, you can just lie down in a stand of small trees or shrubs. Avoid tall trees. The lighting can jump sideways. Side flashes are a thing.
She seems to be in a fairly exposed area so she's basically a lightning rod.
If lightning does strike, she's going to be hit.

from the looks of exactly where she was she probably has various bits of metal on her and no trees, structures, light poles, etc so potentially a great target for lightning.
if this happens out in a normal street but there are street lights, houses, aerials on houses, etc, then the chances the lightning would hit you rather than something around you is drastically lower.

Years ago, bachelor party in Colorado, a lot of nature and hiking. We always left way too late, as my dad had taught me. He instilled a fear of being high up after 12pm, and the severity of mountain storms. One hike, I saw signs of a storm and we are prolly 13k elevation. I basically had to freak out to the group saying we have to get tf off this mountain rn to convince people to go. Mind you, we are all farm boys from the midwest, so its the first mountain most have seen. 2 dudes stayed. Despite me telling them they are risking their lives.
They said it was the scariest few hours of their lives. Lucky to be alive. Fucking idiots.

My husband was an officer in the army some years ago. Anyway, his company was out on a field problem bear Fort Carson, CO when a summer storm rolled in. For whatever reason, quite a few of the soldiers stood under one of their metal tents for shelter. IIRC, 11-12 got stuck by lightning, with 2-4 needing medical attention.
So he’s calling in a helicopter med-evac while his buddy is doing cpr on the one female soldier who got hit and it stopped her heart. I’ve always assumed it stopped her heart bc a bra would direct the lightning directly to it…
Fortunately, there were no lasting injuries, CPR on female soldier was successful and all who needed it were transported to the hospital.

Had this happen in the Sierras 6 years ago. Hiked up a bluff one morning (was ~12k feet elevation), saw a cluster of dark clouds, and knew enough to warn my buddies. By the time we realized it was heading towards us, we didn’t have time to pack camp and hit the trail. So all 8 of us decided to hunkered down.
We were able to cram 5 in a tent. But 3 of us, including me, were in hammocks with a couple strings of nylon between the trees and a big tarp tied to heavy stones over it all to shield us.
Winds hit at over 70mph carrying appleseed sized hail that tore through the tarp and lasted over 3 hours. Winds were so strong it kept moving the stones anchoring the tarp. Scariest afternoon of my life

Couple of foolish teens who thought they were immortal went up that mountain, they came back with one less person thanks to a lightning strike. If you find yourself without any safe place nearby and lightnings are striking, crouch and stand on your toes, like you're taking a shit. Feet together, head down, hand on hand.
Finally, if you have a dry backpack or anything insulating, put it under your feet.
Mind you, it's a last resort. But shit can happen quite fast when hiking

Laying down is one of the worst things you could do. When lightning strikes, deadly electrical currents ripple outward across the Earth's surface. This ground current can travel up to 10-30 meters (~30-100ft) of the strike point.
Laying down flat on the ground would maximize your body's contact with the ground, putting you at higher risk for fatal electrocution.

Running is what you’re supposed to do, your hair standing up is due to the air molecules becoming charged and “pulling on your hair” which also is charged by static. As soon as the air becomes sufficiently charged, it breaks down into plasma allowing the current/free flow of electrons through the ionized air (aka lightning) to flow all at once

You can physically feel and hear when lightning is going to strike near you. It’s a staticky feeling that drapes over your whole body and the air sounds crackly if that makes sense. I had lightning strike in front of me once and I cannot begin to explain the fear I felt when every hair on my body stood on end. I instantly knew I was in danger
