Mod Post [META] [Mod Announcement] How to use this sub - and how (not) to use the [META] Tag

Upvotes

Hello r/ifyoulikeblank!

This is your friendly neighborhood moderator, here with some information on how to correctly use this sub and our title tags, and to address some recent frequent misuse of the [META] tag in the sub.

If you are new here, please read this post before posting. If you have been around a while, please take a moment to refresh yourself with some of our rules. :)

There are two - and only two - kinds of posts allowed in this sub.

Our sub is NOT a self-promotion vehicle for new artists or creators, and it is NOT a general discussion or song/movie/actor/music/genre identification sub. We are a media recommendation sub, and we have very specific guidelines for posts to be allowed here.

There are two ways to format your post titles here, depending on if you would like to ask for recommendations or to give others recommendations with your OP.

If you want people to recommend things to you:

The “IIL” acronym stands for "If I like..." - to be used in a way that states "If I like (this song) because of (reasons,) what else will I like?"

This is the most common type of post here, and most OPs should be using THIS format for their posts! Your title must use the [IIL] tag - It will be reported by our frequent long-time members here if it does not, and it will be removed if you use the [IYL] or [META] tags instead of the [IIL] tag.

The title should look like the following example:

[IIL] The song (name a song you like here) because (give a specific trait about it you want suggestions to include), [WEWIL?]

  • The "WEWIL" acronym stands for "What else will I like?”

  • Your example should include something specific about the song that you want to hear more of in the music recommended to you. (Without details, no one can give you appropriate responses and you won't get suggestions that you will actually LIKE.)

If you want to recommend media to others that you think they'll like based on some other piece of media that is similar:

The “IYL” acronym stands for "If YOU like..." - to be used in a way that states "If you enjoy (this song) because of (reasons,) you might also like this song."

This tag is not for self promotion. This SUB is not for self promotion. If you post your own material here, you WILL get banned, without warning. No exceptions, no appeals.

The title should look like the following example:

[IYL] The movie (some movie similar to your suggestion) because (your reason you think it is similar to your recommendation), [YMAL] (this suggested movie).

  • The "YMAL" acronym stands for "You may also like..."

  • This is a VERY uncommon post type in this sub, unless people are attempting to subvert rule 2. We ALWAYS look at these posts, but if we miss one, our long-term members sure won’t - and they WILL report you for a rule 2 violation and you WILL be banned.

  • If you are suspected of passing off your own media as an "I found this new media and you might like it!" post, that will earn you an immediate permanent ban from the sub for trying to subvert rule two.

Please note that moderators look at your posting history across Reddit, and if you are spamming your own stuff elsewhere, you are going get a ban here. Period.

How to use (and how NOT to use) the [META] tag:

The [META] tag is NOT so you may post off-topic posts or general media discussion posts or music identification posts, or anything that is not an IIL or an IYL.

The [META] tag is only to be used if you have questions or comments about this subreddit itself, and how it operates on Reddit.

Examples include suggestions for new rules here, asking for clarification about a rule here, suggesting a new theme, stickied post, etc in the sub, or asking the moderation team any other question about this sub - not asking the members here about media.

Thank you all for reading, and for your help in ensuring these rules are adhered to. We are a million-member (and counting) sub with a VERY small moderation team, so your help in following these rules and reporting rule-breaking posts to us is greatly appreciated!

Have a wonderful day :)

Film [IIL] BlackBerry (2023), The Social Network (2010), Spotlight (2015), The Big Short (2015) and The Dropout mini-series (2022)

Movies or tv series dramatizing startups that crash and burn or the uncovering of some world changing events. Or anything you feel is similar! I just noticed that all my examples fit in those two specific categories.

Music [iil] songs about liking a “bad girl”?

Upvotes

Hello!! I’m looking for more songs with this sort of subject. I don’t know how to describe it beyond “Shes bad news, she wears a leather jacket and smokes cigarettes and I want her” and the vibe of sneaking around and secretly hooking up. Thats a really silly way to put it but I hope you know what I’m getting at 😅 it doesn’t have to be exactly that just anything you think’ll scratch a similar itch.

Some examples I have are: Only Angel by Harry Styles, No 1. Party Anthem by Arctic Monkeys (AM in general has this vibe), and Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene. I feel like I definitely know more songs like this but they’re escaping me at the moment.

Thank you!!

does anyone know any other singers who sound just like him? or bands or whatever,, thank you ^_^

Books [IIL] Romantic Fiction - Melanie La'brooy

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I recently read Romantic Fiction by Melanie La'brooy and honestly loved it. It was such a light, fun read with great characters and a really solid story.

The main reason I picked it up in the first place—and what I loved most about while reading it—was that it completely felt like watching a sitcom about a group of friends. That ensemble dynamic and cozy, funny vibe hit the exact spot for me.

Does anyone have any book recommendations or similar titles that capture that same friend-group sitcom energy? Would really appreciate any suggestions!

Music IIL honeybee by Olivia Rodrigo, What other songs will I like?

The gentle, choral, almost angelic feel of this song is what I'm looking for more of! Kind of in the vein of Viva La Vida, but Im struggling to find somgs that feel the same.

Music [IIL] Michelle Branch

Upvotes

I really love Michelle Branch’s first two albums. The Spirit Room is one of my top two albums ever! I love her y2K pop sound mixed with pop rock in The Spirit Room, and her more singer-songwriter-y stuff in Hotel Paper

(Avril Lavigne’s Let Go and the band After are already on my radar. love both.)

Music [IIL] "July (Part One)" by Hotel Books, WEWIL?

Upvotes

I love Hotel Books as a whole, but I'm looking for songs similar to "July (Part One)" with the theme of self-sabotage in the same post-hardcore/emo genres. La Dispute is a similar band to what I'm looking for.

Music [IIL] songs that make me feel like a siren

Upvotes

For the longest time Angel by Massive Attack and Lilith by Saint Avangeline have been one of my favourite songs. They sounds so hypnotic and give off siren-y vibes. I likes songs like that for when i'm daydreaming, are there any other songs with a similar essence?

Music IIL ukulele songs like Ram On by Paul McCartney, what else will I like?

Upvotes

I bought a ukulele just to learn Ram On. Now that I've learned it I realized I don't really know many other ukulele songs outside of the ubiquitous classics like Riptide or Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I'd really like something that's as melodic and kind of indie as Ram On if possible

Music [IIL] Sure by Monsune, what other songs with the same vibe would you recommend?

Upvotes

I’m looking for songs that has a similar nostalgic, smooth/sensual, RnB/funk/jazz-influenced sound.

YouTube/Streaming [Iil]Youtube Channels like CC Patrick, MattyBalls, etc but for Video Games

Upvotes

I'm looking for video essayist that take deep dives on controversial, weird, obscure parts of the gaming industry whether that's game devs (i.e, Phil Fish ) , the games themselves (i.e, Man Hunt, Hot Coffee GTA) , or related to gamers themselves (i.e,Wings of Redemption, DSP, etc)

Thanks

Note: Looking for the video to have high production value like graphics, clips, etc.

Music [IIL] evil, sexy (sounding) songs like Biscuit by Portishead

Upvotes

I like a lot of Portishead, like All Mine, Humming, and Scorn are all awesome. I think Beth Gibbon's delivery makes their songs sound super sensual. Also All Mine just has that overtly crazy, unstable sound, which I enjoy.

Additionally, I like many songs from Massive Attack's Mezzanine (most notably, Inertia Creeps and Angel), and I especially like Madonna's cover of I Want You in which Massive Attack was featured. I like these three songs for their heavy, almost hostile-sounding beat (which I find super hot!!)

Music [IIL] Songs/artists with a more "esoteric" or pagan feel, akin to Sigur Ros? Or just anything that uses those types of instruments and beats.

Upvotes

I have no idea what to call this, I just know most of it is ambient music and it has that sort of transcendental feeling to it, and any sort of chorus and/or exotic feeling instrumental, like it has a sort of pagan/tribal, maybe even religious vibe to it?

Anyway, some example include:

Sigur Ros: Smaskifa 9, varðeldur

Lisa Gerrard: Coming Home

Dead Can Dance: The Host of Seraphim

Silver Mt Zion: 13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round Your Bed.

Kinda trying to stretch this out a lil to not leave it empty but I'm mostly looking for songs similar to the ones by Lisa Gerrard/Dead Can Dance. Iirc they're pretty much the same person, Lisa did some OSTs for movies like Gladiator so the epic feel of those songs kinda makes sense. I'm looking for mostly that flavor of ambient tracks.

Some less fitting examples that I wanna add because of the instrumental/beat are Glass by Blood Cultures and Genesis by Grimes. Maybe the intro to Parasite Eve by Bring Me The Horizon, which is sampled from an eastern european folk song. Not sure if the last thing helps, because I'm not into folk music but I do like the thing they did for Parasite Eve. Dunno what else to add. Unarchiver by Blood Cultures too? It's got some use of choirs sampled in, I liked that.

Film [IIL] Mafia Mamma (2023) what are similar films?

Upvotes

I watched Mafia Mamma 2023 starring Toni Collette with my girlfriend and omg we had so much fun. The idea of, "Shes a mafia boss🔫😡🤌, but also😧, a mom🤱🤗💖" is so funny to me. It's a total slop movie, but it's enjoyable slop and that's what I'm looking for!! But we're struggling to find something as good (jk i mean GREAT) and would love some recs!

Music [IIL] Modern-ish songs with heavy French House/Bloghouse inspiration

Upvotes

https://open.spotify.com/track/5Iy057uXuYY8MQh6CYSgXI?si=f8b72c3cc9084e1a

I really love this obscure remix I found, mostly for the Justice aesthetic it's got going on. However, I find that a lot of actual French house from the early 2000s is either repetitive, or a little less energetic than some of the stuff like this. I guess I'd be looking for either songs that are more modern, or skewed towards dance/electro crowds rather than house, but with the same funky, heavy bass, and French inspiration.

Probably explained this horribly, but songs that have that Ed Banger style without super long buildups, repetition, and are a bit more energetic in the spirit of more modern dance music.

Music [IIL] Lemon Jelly (musician) [WEWIL]?

Upvotes

Looking for more positive mellow vibes similar to Lemon Jelly. Particularly tracks like "his majesty king raam" or "nice weather for ducks"; very storybook feeling.

I’ve been listening to this song on a loop all weekend, and I’m looking for other sorrowfully beautiful songs like it (choral encouraged but not required), though I have not had much luck.

TV [IIL] Stargate SG1,Stargate Atlantis [WEWIL]

Upvotes

Fell in love with the Stargate franchise and I had a blast watching the entire thing over the past year. Since i'm now done with it,i'm looking at watching something else.

It doesn't need to be Sci-Fi or in Space. I just want something that fits the general vibes and tones we got with shows like SG1 and that i'm gonna watch for a while,so it doesn't need to be Sci-fi related as long as it fits.

My only criteria is that it needs to have an ending or atleast something resembling an ending(In case it's a show that got canceled or brought back) or is still ongoing.

Music [IIL] The song Ashes by The Longest Johns because because of the theme/lyrics, [WEWIL?]

Upvotes

Hi, I recently heard the song Ashes and was captivated by the phrase: "I'll tend to the flame you can worship the ashes".

I can't think of any other song that represents so well the idea of working for a future while someone else is stuck in an idealized version of the past. So the thing is I don't really care for the style or the song (I'm not looking for shanties) or the genre. I'm looking for songs with that same meaning in the lyrics.

One thing I have found is a lot of songs that treat this from a romantic point of view (someone stuck in an old relationship) but I specifically try to avoid those. I don't want the song to be about lovers, I want something that feels about the society or community. I don't know if that makes any sense. But basically a song you would sing to someone who is standing in the way of progress for all by refusing to let go of their old ways.

Thanks a lot for any recommendations 🙏🙏
