Question Intramural sports explanation?

Upvotes

Hello I am currently in my senior year of high school and considering Iowa State as one of my schools.
I currently play varsity football for my team up in Wisconsin and want to continue playing football for fun in college. I heard intramural sports are a thing here and was wondering what that was all about. How competitive is it? What type of commitment does it take? Being a competitive person is there playoffs and stuff like that? What has been your experience playing? And if you played varsity football in high school, what are the differences?
Also, if you have any other tips for a new student unrelated to sports I would gladly appreciate that too.
Thanks!

Tools to help succeed in Calculus courses (BeardMeetsCalculus)

Post image
Upvotes

We are now a few weeks into the semester and students might be looking around for tools to help them succeed in their courses. For students who are not aware, there are many resources to help them succeed in many of the introductory courses including supplemental instruction (SI), help/office hours, going to lecture (who knew?), the textbook, and others. These are all pretty common for low-level courses, there is one extra thing that really helps set calculus apart, the online resources made by BeardMeetsCalculus (aka Steve Butler)!!

Calculus 1 (1650)

  • https://www.calc1.org/fall-26 -- Lectures from this semester, and walkthrough of practice quiz problems to help you prepare for the quizzes. Want to get ahead of the lectures? Then use https://www.calc1.org/fall-24
  • https://www.calc1.org/exams -- Recent exams, with solutions and some walkthroughs. Great for getting a feel of what exams would be like. Particularly popular the 24 hours before an exam.
  • https://www.calc1.org/reviews -- Thorough and challenging reviews of the material. Great supplemental material for getting ready for exams. (Protip: Also look at the practice exam from Fall 24)

Calculus 2 (1660)

  • https://www.calc2.org/spring-25 -- Lectures from the Spring 2025 semester. The "Practice problems" in a given week are highly similar to many of the quiz problems and can be useful if you are stuck on the quizzes.
  • https://www.calc2.org/exams -- Recent exams, with solutions and some walkthroughs. Great for getting a feel of what exams would be like. Particularly popular the 24 hours before an exam.
  • https://www.calc2.org/reviews -- Thorough and challenging reviews of the material. Great supplemental material for getting ready for exams. (Protip: Also look at the practice exam from Spring 25)

Calculus 3 (2650)

  • https://www.calc3.org/fall-25 -- Lectures from the Fall 2025 semester. The "Practice" sets are highly similar to many of the quiz problems and can be useful if you are stuck on the quizzes.
  • https://www.calc3.org/exams -- Recent exams, with solutions and some walkthroughs. Great for getting a feel of what exams would be like. Particularly popular the 24 hours before an exam.
  • https://www.calc3.org/reviews -- Thorough and challenging reviews of the material. Great supplemental material for getting ready for exams. (Protip: Also look at the practice exam from Fall 25 and Fall 24)

Differential equations (2660/2670)

  • https://www.calc4.org/spring-2026 -- Lectures from the Spring 2026 semester; very similar to what is going on this semester.
  • https://www.calc4.org/quizzes -- Sets of practice quizzes that are highly similar to the quiz problems and can be useful if you are stuck on the quizzes.
  • https://www.calc4.org/exams -- Recent exams, with solutions and some walkthroughs. Great for getting a feel of what exams would be like. Particularly popular the 24 hours before an exam.
  • https://www.calc4.org/reviews -- Thorough and challenging reviews of the material. Great supplemental material for getting ready for exams.

Bonus: Business math (1500/1510)

A few final notes:

  • Friends tell friends about BeardMeetsCalculus. Spread the good word, let's get as many students passing the courses as we can.
  • The videos are on YouTube, but if you don't have an ad-blocker, alternative links to Vimeo are also provided (both on the linked pages and in the YouTube video descriptions) which has no ads.
  • The YouTube channel is not monetized; this is not an attempt to make money off of students. Some people just want to sit back and watch the world learn.
  • If it doesn't seem to load, make sure you included the "www." at the beginning of the URL. (I wish I knew how to fix that!)
  • Before most exams you can find me outside the library where you can grab a free duck and (sometimes) a snack. In case you are wondering, I am the big guy with a beard.
  • Coming in spring 2027 will be a new addition, Math 2070 ( https://www.linearclass.org/ )

Forgot to Opt out

Upvotes

So immediate access was giving me issues with opting out and it wasn’t showing me the option a couple days ago, so I kinda put a pin in it and didn’t follow through completely with opting out.

Woke up this morning and realized that the deadline was yesterday. I already emailed the bookstore and immediate access account, but what are the chances of me actually getting a refund?

Question Anyone at ISU Interested in ML, LLMs, or AI?

Upvotes

Hey! I recently moved to the U.S. and am currently living in Ames. Before I worked as a machine learning engineer at TikTok.

I’d love to meet some people around Iowa State who are interested in machine learning, LLMs, recommendation systems, or computer science in general. If you’d like to grab a coffee and chat about tech, industry, or anything else, feel free to DM me!

I’m also hoping to improve my conversational English and make some new friends here. Happy to share my experience working in ML as well!

Student Life Is it my imagination or have the dining halls had a lot less variety so far this year?

Upvotes

Last year, it felt like there was a lot more creativity and variety in meals. But so far this year, I feel like I’ve been seeing the same stuff over and over.

UDM Fuse has been some variety of rice bowl every time I’ve been there, Windows has been cycling through the same four soups for the last three weeks, and I feel like I’ve seen breakfast for dinner several times as well.

Not to mention that they got rid of the iced tea at both dining halls (though that’s more of a personal gripe)

Has anyone else felt similarly?

(Edit: also, does anyone else feel really underwhelmed by the new Bevi machines?)

Tips for Self Studying COMS 3110

Upvotes

Currently in COMS 3110, prof is a grad student who has never taught before and it shows. She finds ways to explain simple concepts in a complex way. I worry by the time we get to the real content in class (not COMS 2280 review) that I'm going to be insanly lost, especially since I've heard its not an easy course by any means. Any tips are appreciated.

What's crazy is I found this CD a few days after learning of the show. I was also listening to it on spotify on the way to Jays cds before I randomly found it there and it had been there for 5 years. (I think)

If you like old Jimmy Eat World or Death Cab for Cutie you'd like them.

Question Lecture Hall etiquette

Upvotes

Something that I’ve noticed my first couple years at ISU is that people tend to sit near the end of the rows in lectures. Why not start from the middle and go out???

Secret Message at Parks?

Post image
Upvotes

I found this message on one of those chair cubicles past the bookshelves at parks. I dont know how old this message is or if this is well known but It seems like a type of scavenger hunt? The message seems to say "let's be unknown friends? If yes, check book HA203 U171". I tried looking for HA203 but I could only find HA201. Then again, idk how the library book system works 🤷‍♂️. If you would like to see the message in person, go to the second floor, turn right into the library, take a left and past the bookshelves. The cubicle closest to HA201 and the window is the one. If anyone wants to figure this out, that would be great!

Is anyone here taking this class or has taken it before? Do you suggest taking it online or in-person? Do you have any reviews of the coursework and the professor too?
Thank you really much and have a nice day!

Event The Plague is Coming

Upvotes

Beware all those who live in Campus, a terrible cold is stirring in the dorms.

Fr though, I just started here and I already caught a cold (Maple-Willow-Larch area), please wash your hands, drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep.

Vitamin C and Zinc are the only supplements proven to help with colds. Buy em asap. Buy DayQuil too, life saver but it also makes me kinda dizzy.

Looking for a roommate!

Upvotes

Hi! I am a junior who is planning on living with one of my friends next year but i'm leaving my current apartment. I'm hoping to find someone to take my place!

It's 4 bed 2 bath for $515 a month - pre electricity

It's 2 blocks away from campus

washers and dryers in the building

There are 3 very nice girls, and they would appreciate getting to meet a couple times beforehand.

We are hoping to find someone before October 12, when the lease needs to be resigned.

More details can be discussed later!

Question is studying abroad worth it?

Upvotes

as the title says, I’m just wondering if it’s worth the costs that go with it.

for context, I’m specifically looking into a 2-3 week program during the summer that would go to a different continent. it’s for graphic design, which requires an internship OR study abroad in order to graduate. i already have an internship so it’s not required, but I would get some credits and a cool experience to bond with my peers in the major.

I believe it’s about 7 or 8k. is it worth spending that much for just a couple weeks, or would it be a better use of that money to plan my own trip somewhere?

Question AI anxiety

Upvotes

I’m a freshman here at Iowa State, and lately I’ve been experiencing a lot of anxiety about the possibility of being falsely accused of using AI on academic assignments. I’ve written for fun for as long as I can remember and have always loved reading, so writing has naturally become one of my stronger skills. I rarely use AI in general, and I have never used it to write my academic work.

However, my academic advisor recently mentioned that some professors are extremely cautious about AI use and will not hesitate to report students if they suspect that an assignment was AI-generated, and some will do that without even communicating with the student first. Since hearing that, I’ve become increasingly worried that the quality or style of my writing could somehow work against me. It has gotten to the point where I sometimes catch myself intentionally simplifying my writing or avoiding more complex ideas because I’m afraid that writing “too well” could make a professor suspicious.

I don’t want that fear to affect the quality of my work or keep me from developing as a writer. Is there anything I can do proactively to protect myself in the event that I am ever falsely accused of using AI? For example, would keeping outlines, drafts, revision histories, notes, or other documentation of my writing process be helpful?
