The skeptic in me wants to check if its that or just that airplane travel is just more open to more people now and with more people, percentages of seeing this kinds of things increases, which also works in parallel with easy access to phone video documentation and social media sharing.

I had a friend back in college that was very intelligent. Quick with word play, taking advanced math courses, we played a lot of board games and he was quick to pick up new games and great at strategy. Dude was a gymnast. Everyone in our group considered him one of the smarter people in it.
Until the day we were helping some friends move, and he legitimately tried to fit a mattress through a door frame horizontally. Repeatedly.

Could also be anxious about flying or just high. I know enough people that get really nervous about flying that they make silly mistakes or are uncharacteristically forgetful, I also know a few people that like to take edibles or get drunk before flying.

I work at a gas station and a guy came in asking if we had an air gauge for tires and we loaned him one. He looked at it and says "this puts air in the tires?" Straight faced mid 30s guy. We told him no and explained how it worked and no luck. Coworker had to go out and firstly tell the guy he needed to bring his car over to the air pump then teach him how it worked. We're a beach town so lots of people airing their tires back up after driving in the soft sand but that was a first.

I try to give people some grace at an airport. People can be tired, hungry, stressed and emotional. Who knows what all came before this part of his trip. All those things can make you do some silly things in front of an audience of fellow travelers.

Sometimes the airline chooses not to allow this if there is still space overhead so this guy could have just been pretending the bag does not fit, so that he could in fact, keep it with him.
