This may be too niche but has anyone else who frequents Coles in New Town noticed it smells absolutely awful in there lately? I don’t understand how the staff can handle working in that environment.

I currently live in Melbourne and absolutely hate it here. Both my husband and I are looking forward to moving to Hobart in December 2026. We visited in 2025 and absolutely fell in love with the place. We are seeking a slower paced community-oriented lifestyle surrounded by lots of nature, good food, fresh air, and most of all friendly people, which I can see Hobart has to offer. I am wondering what living in Hobart is really like, and what we should expect, what is the job market is like.

I have a background in Mechanical Engineering, I have worked in a Technical consultancy and Laboratory Testing Environment for the past 4 years, which makes my skillset transferable to quality assurance and control, Technical roles in the government, or any engineering data oriented (Hydrographic Data, Bureau of Metorology, CSIRO Technical roles) roles as well.

Additionally, I worked 1 year in university administration, and 1 year in the past in retail. I am a very friendly person diligent and hardworking. I am currently looking for employement but struggling to break into the market, any advice in regards to jobs will also be appreciated. I am not picky, I am happy to work outside of engineering environment as well, but I am unable to understand what the market wants and what they are looking for.

im bored do if any1 could drop ideas of things to do or places to go solo or with compamy or even with strangers I do not mind.

I'm not from Hobart, I'm from Queensland and visit from time to time, but one thing that really struck me is that Hobart is just like a little Oslo or Aalborg, with a lovely historic downtown, beautiful scenery but also not afraid to do some good modern stuff, like that UTAS building in North Hobart, MONA...even the airport renovation is pretty decent for a small city.

So Hobart has about 250k and there are numerous small cities in Europe (Particularly in Denmark, France, Austria and Germany) of that size who have built a dedicated mass transit networks.

The scale is smaller but the underlying principle is the same.

I like to think of it like "doing a line of coke" where you deliberately try and line up many popular destinations on the one corridor, eg universities, stadiums/arenas, major shopping centers, clusters of high density housing / business districts / restaurant precincts / airports / museums on the one line.

So a wide variety of people have a reason to use it and hence bigger vehicles and more frequency and speed/priority, and eventually justify building dedicated infrastructure, purley to save time when bridging between these destinations.

So without going into too much detail, I've tried to do that here.

Now, BRT versus trams, I think there is a case for both, but one captains call I'll make is that it is a waste of time having the trams go the long way around the Domain and miss everyone just because the tracks are there.

South of Moonah they need to run down the guts through New Town and North Hobart where all the good stuff is. This probably means cutting a lane of traffic on Elizabeth st and punching right through to the University in order to get bums on seats to justify the expense of light rail. You can compensate for this by adding a lane on the Brooker Highway to encourage traffic to use that corridor instead.

The whole Sorrel/Airport/Rosny/CBD/Kingston corridor has far too many steep inclines for trams to ever work, and you already have sections of Motorway that could be widened with bus lanes if needed. Sorry, you're probably not getting a rail tunnel under the Derwent any time soon either.

I think the big expense here is doing a new 2 lane Tasman Bridge, purely for walkers/cyclists/buses...Have a look at the Green Bridge built to UQ in Brisbane for how this can be done.

The second thing I'd do is a 2km bus only tunnel from the Stadium to the start of the Southern Outlet. The reality is that if this was a 4 lane road tunnel with exhaust stacks it will cost megabucks. If you relieved the traffic with a 2 lane bus tunnel for electric buses only, its half the diameter and doesn't need such a big exhaust system....Will Hobart be ballsy enough to go a different route and spend the money on a public transport system before a road tunnel and get cars off the road that way?

Now, I'm not a local, so feel free to point out any local nuances I've missed.

In short:

There are concerns mothers will fall through the cracks when the mother-baby unit at the Royal Hobart Hospital is replaced with a new facility.

While the mother-baby unit deals with complex mental health challenges, staff have been told mothers must be "psychologically well" to be eligible for the replacement service.

What's next?

The mother-baby unit is to close at the end of the year.

Tasmania's health department has dismissed staff concerns about the level of care its new mother-baby unit (MBU) will offer, claiming there will be "no reduction in capability".

But health workers familiar with the plan have told the ABC they have been informed the Intensive Residential Parenting Unit (IRPU) will only be able to cater to mothers with low-to-moderate postnatal depression and anxiety, as opposed to "complex mental health" issues the current unit deals with.

They have told the ABC that, while IRPU will be a "wonderful service", it cannot replace the MBU at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

With that unit to close at the end of the year, health workers and advocates are worried some women will "fall through the cracks".

The Royal's MBU looks after mothers with low-to-high mental health issues, including bipolar and a history of postnatal psychosis, provided they are assessed as at low risk of harming themselves or others.

I have a Kodak 350 luma projector that most likely has a battery failure. I have called multiple repair and battery replacement stores and no one will go near a lithium battery.

Hi guys. I worked in Disability support a few years back. Enjoyed the role very much and wouldn't mind going back into it. I preferred the social support side of things, rather than personal care etc, but flexible. Looking for which orgs are good to work for, and which to not bother with please. Any recommendations (or otherwise), from either the worker or client side appreciated.

I just started watching tonight's Hobart City council meeting. Not 20 minutes in there has been multiple questions from members of the public concerning the nature of a previous workshop on high rise zoning conditions in Hobart, and what that means for heritage and the like.

I thought I'd make a post to see what the sentiment in this room is regarding building taller buildings in Hobart. Do you think it's something we should be considering for the sake of expanded housing and accommodation options, or do you think there are other ways to approach these kinds of societal concerns without building up further? Is it about working with developers to more effectively execute the current planning scheme, or is the only reality to go higher? What are the issues and benefits you foresee?

I myself am currently for building higher. Nothing too obscene but I do believe we are underutilising the spatial potential of Hobart. Of course there are trade-offs, and there will be challenges about where they are able to be built or not (which I have gleaned was the issue discussed as this previous workshop). We aren't somewhere like Paris that can build highrises on the outskirts in order to preserve heritage (well, Haussman's relatively recent heritage). Even if we managed to do that I'm not sure how satisfactory Parisians find such an arrangement.
