My old man passed on father’s day of this year and I was going through his toys and got my hands on this. It’s nothing crazy but it was the first handgun I fired growing up so I had to keep it in the family.

Military vs civilian tensions

Upvotes

AITA here -

Going shooting for my birthday with a small, trusted group of individuals and a friends boyfriend kind of invited himself along. Nothing against the guy but he’s ex-military (reserves) and is the type to talk like he served for a century when he was in maybe 5 years.

That being said - I’ve never gone shooting with the guy, no idea about his gun habits or safety but I’m automatically nervous because 1) Any military person I’ve ever gone shooting with has automatically assumed they have superior knowledge and ability to teach simply because they’re military and 2) I’ve had more loaded guns pointed at me and more safety violations shooting with military personnel than I ever have had with civilian shooters.

Wife seems to think I’m being prejudiced and a dick but I’m genuinely nervous he’s going to try and take over the event/showboat and cause issues

Has anyone had similar experiences shooting civilian with military or am I making a generalization off a few bad apples?

Canik Impressed Me

Canik TTI Combat with inline ports and the P211 GTO combat with V6 ports and a series 70 trigger.

The Canik actually feels better in hand, but the GTO is faster and more accurate. For the price, this canik really surprised me!

Gun Talk Tuesday - September 8th 2026

Upvotes

Tuesday catch-all post for all the questions, comments, rants, etc. that don’t belong in their own thread or the designated Politics thread

Today's Topic:

For those that carry, tell us a bit about your carry gun. What kind of training have you put it through? What kind of thought process went behind the decision to pick that gun for carry? Do you like it, or are you eyeing something else for the future?

"Traditional" Scout Rifle, and "Urban" Scout Rifle

Post image
Upvotes

So I have always been a interested in the idea of the "Scout Rifle" by Jeff Cooper since I learned about it many moons ago.

I ended up finally getting one for myself, which is the pictured Ruger American Gen II Scout here.

I would like to give a shoutout to Ruger here for having making available a bolt action rifle in a "scout" configuration at a reasonable price for what it is. This thing really does have most of the qualities I wanted in my rifle.

Before I had every got my 308 scout rifle, I had been setting up my Ruger PC Carbine 9mm with a MLOK handguard in a similar way to how I would think a "scout rifle" would be in the form of a 9mm PCC.

I am aware that this would not be considered a true "scout rifle" as it is running in 9mm, but I consider this one to be a scout concept more built for an urban environment where distances will be much shorter. That reason along with the higher probability of 9mm ammunition being available in an urban setting.

So anyways, here are the features for how what I wanted in my "scout" setups

  1. Use common ammunition calibers

  2. Usable iron sights even when an optic is mounted on the rifle (in case any malfunction happens to an optic)

  3. Optics themselves need to allow for quick target acquisition while also allowing for high environmental awareness.

  4. Lightweight bipod that does not interfere.

  5. Setup for quick handling of application

With that said here is my setup for my "traditional" or what I like to call my "Wilderness" Scout Rifle

Ruger American Gen II Scout .308

  1. Vortex Crossfire HD 1.5-5x Scout Scope with Illuminated Center Dot, mounted on Vortex Hunter Scope Rings High with See-through peep hole

  2. CVLIFE Carbon Fiber Spring Loaded Bipod with Tilt

  3. UTG Universal Barrel Clamp Picatinny Rail

  4. Braun/Harbor Freight 1000 Lumen Weapon Light

  5. Generic Amazon 2 Point Sling with Padded Section

  6. Grey Stock from Base model Ruger American Gen II .308

And here is my setup for my "Urban" Scout Rifle

Ruger PC Carbine MLOK 9mm

  1. Magpul PC Backpacker Stock with 2x Glock 26 Magazines in Stock Storage Compartment

  2. Primary Arms SLX-MD-21 ACSS Red Dot Sight on Low Profile Mount

  3. UTG 0.7 inch Picatinny Riser with See-through hole

  4. Holosun HM3x 3x Magnifier with Mount Spacer Installed

  5. CVLIFE Carbon Fiber Bipod

  6. Braun/Harbor Freight 1000 Lumen Weapon Light

  7. TuFok 0.27 Inch 13 slot Picatinny Rail

  8. Generic Aluminum 6 slot Picatinny Rail Section

  9. Generic MLOK Sling QD Mount

  10. Generic Amazon QD 2 Point Sling

The RDS/Magnifier combo on a 9mm PCC also makes a lot more sense than a straight up scope for the PCC "Scout" 1x magnification is enough, but having a quick option for a better picture gives the platform more flexibility. Having the ACSS reticle on the RDS also makes target acquisition VERY FAST, along with having ranging and BDC dashes for when longer shots are needed under magnification. The flexibility of the optics setup on the really fits the PCC for a "scout" role.

Here is how it looks when it is "backpack" mode, where it can be stored in a bag or car easily. I love how you can have 3 Glock 26 magazines available at all times on the rifle even when stored. This is also why I did not go with a traditional "scout scope" on the handguard/barrel, as I find storage in a pack easier with the topics on the receiver as the rifle is more "flat" shaped.

So what do you guys think of this "Urban Scout" idea?

Thoughts on one of the new Marlin 1894s in .357 magnum as my first rifle?

Post image
Upvotes

I went shooting with my grandfather a few weeks ago and he let me try out a bunch of his guns, and had a blast shooting his marlin lever action clone (and his revolvers, but I turn 18 in a month, so it's a bit early for me to think about buying a python.) I especially like how they have rails for optics unlike the Winchester design. I know they tend to be kind of pricy, and I see a lot of people recommending stuff like ar15s and 10/22s for a first rifle, so I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks I'd be facing choosing something like this. Thanks!

And maybe add a video of inspecting it I'm really curious on what it looks like and Why. If I ever get a firearm I think it would be a nice shiny Colt python.

Opal ammo problems

Post image
Upvotes

Bought 400 rounds of new Opal Ammo (Farro 124gr). Out of the first 75 rounds, I’ve already had 7 light primer strikes.
I tested it side-by-side with some Federal, which ran with zero issues. Has anyone else run into quality control problems or hard primers with this batch?
For context, I only ran it through my P365 setup since it’s copper plated.

What to wipe down with before storage?

Upvotes

I’ve got a few antique rifles that pretty much just live in the back of a closet. What’s the best thing to wipe them down with before I put them back into storage? Maybe use a rifle storage sock as well?

Thanks in advance.

10mm pistols that come with a threaded barrel?

Upvotes

I want a 10mm pistol for protection from dangerous animals while hiking and also to double as a home defense gun, but I plan to get a suppressor for it so I don’t lose my hearing if I have to actually use it. Are there any 10mm pistols that come with a threaded barrel so I don’t have to go through the hassle of ordering a custom threaded barrel?

Snagged one of these

Snagged one of these MAC 9 DS-D Comps a while back and finally had a chance to put some rounds through it. At just north of 1k rounds it’s barely even broken in. However, I haven’t had a single malfunction in those thousand rounds. Trijicon SRO and $40 knock off x-300 from eBay went on when I bought it. Light still works good as new so far, very bright!

CHRISTENSEN ARMS MPR

Upvotes

I have been looking at getting a 308 rifle for a while and I like the tactical look of rifles. If I have the money to spend on it would this rifle be worth it?

I keep on watching youtube videos on this rifle and it seems like it gets mixed reviews on the accuracy people seems to complain about the grouping of their shots saying at around 100 yards they have a 2 inch grouping. and then they send it back to the company and then their grouping Is completely fixed when they get it back.

Is CHRISTENSEN ARMS MPR not a good company?

I am looking to use this rifle to replace my mini 14 that I primarily use for hunting around here in Florida panhandle. Usually going after white tails and wild hogs and I do alot of hiking stocking hunting. Not one for sitting in a tree stand.

I would like to eventually travel to other states using this gun to go after mule deer/ elk maybe a black bear for my dream hunt.

Basically my question is that would this rifle be worth the money or is CHRISTENSEN ARMS MPR not worth the money.
