Was it weird or offensive that I offered a customer a free drink in Germany?
Hi everyone, I work at a fast-food chain in Germany (I’d rather not name the company), and something happened today that left me feeling pretty awkward. I’d especially like to hear from Germans about how you would interpret this situation.
A woman came in with her son. She ordered a menu for her son, but for herself she ordered a burger and fries separately. She was asking me about the prices and seemed surprised by how expensive everything was. She said something along the lines of “Oh my God, that’s expensive” and asked how much a menu would cost etc.
I actually agreed with her in my head because a small burger and fries is quite expensive in the place where I work.
Then, somewhat impulsively, I offered her a free drink. At work, employees can have drinks and I don’t really drink Coke/Sprite anymore, so in my mind it was just a small friendly gesture. I wasn’t trying to imply that she couldn’t afford her food or anything like that.
My German isn’t very good yet, so I couldn’t explain myself properly. I basically managed to ask if she wanted a free drink.
She said, “No, thank you, I don’t need it,” which was completely fine. But then she looked at her son and made what seemed to me like a cringing/awkward facial expression. The whole interaction suddenly felt uncomfortable, and now I’m wondering whether my offer could have come across as insulting, like I was pitying her because she had complained about the prices.
So, especially to Germans: How would you interpret this if you were the customer? Is offering something for free in this situation considered strange or potentially offensive in Germany? Or was it probably just an awkward misunderstanding?
I genuinely meant it as a friendly gesture, but I’d like to understand how it might have sounded from her perspective. I am a girl by the way.

I think Germans just love to complain about prices, and as you saw were embarrassed when you implied they couldn't afford a drink.
So yes, I would say you misread the situation.

some things don't happen a lot and in this case it's a free drink in a fast food restaurant.
don't think about it too much, she probably was just a bit surprised and didn't came up with a proper response in that moment. her face expression is probably due to the fact, that she just never had that experience in a fast food restaurant & it might have felt like charity (something that makes people feel poor)
imo you did nothing wrong (tho your company might see that differently 😄) you were just acting nice.
had a somewhat similar experience ~10 years ago.
I was working as window cleaner at a clothing store, the job included cleaning them also from outside. So, one day an elderly lady came to me and gave me 2€ as a gift for doing my job.
I accepted it and was thankful, but it also left the impression that I'm in need of money from strangers. like a beggar on the streets. I didn't mind at all tho, but it shows that a nice move can lead to unwanted responses.
or, 2 years ago i gave 100€ to my friends as wedding gift with the comment, that they could use it more than me.
in my mind it was due to them having a baby and moved in a new apartment etc. not bcs they were poor, just bcs I literally had a lot of money to spend and almost no financial responsibilities. afterwards it kinda felt odd to say that.
anyway. it's all fine. no need to overthink these things.

Tbh i think the women started the weird stuff by complaining to an employee about prices said employee can't influence anyway. Regarding the "awkward facial expression", maybe she misinterpreted your offer and thought you were hitting on her. At least i don't think she had a reason to be insulted for you pitying her.

You did a good thing, but most people don't want handouts in a scenario like this. It's like the homeless guy you buy a coffee for asking to two sugar cubes - one final say into a decision concerning you when there's none usually. Also, just because I of course don't know what you said, she might not have understood that it was free.
By the way, you could go from a simple statement that it's free "Möchten Sie ein kostenloses Wasser?" = "Would you like a free water?" to something like "Möchten Sie ein Wasser? Geht auf mich / uns / das Haus." = "Would you like a water? It's on me / us / the house."

That’s exactly what I said with a smile and I am a girl. I thought it’s a nice offer. But her facial expression made me awkward.

It sounds like it was a very sweet offer. No worries! Maybe she felt uncomfortable that you thought she couldn’t afford it

Well, what exactly did you say? Offering a free drink is one thing, inviting her to a drink another and somehow her and her kids reaction kind of make me think you accidentally did the latter
•
u/Life_Tea_553 19h ago
No, I showed her the drink with hand gesture and said would you like a free drink like cola zero oder sprite? And then she said no and made that awkward expression and I am a girl.

You being a girl changes basically nothing, might make it weirder if you did accidentally ask someone out tho. Perhaps the way you said it weirded them out instead tho. Could be that she thought you were trying to scam her or upsell her somehow.
Either way, usually people wouldn't say no to a free drink.

She probably felt uncomfortable with talking a Gift because or uncomfortable with her economic Situation.

You just reaffirmed her financially strained situation. Basically told her that she is too poor to afford a drink in front of her son. It's like giving a random guy money because you mistake him for a homeless.

Doesn't sound like a cultural thing to me. I think it was a friendly gesture, but yeah, I would also interpret her reaction like "that person is implying I can't afford it". All good, you can never know if someone is too proud (or whatever) to accept a gift. Not your fault.

its not common but also not weird or offensive. i dont know why the reaction. sounds a bit racist to me with the facial expression if youre non white, but thats also just a guess. stay the way you are, but dont get caught by your supervisor ;)

Yeah and also I am a girl so it was just a friendly gesture towards her. Nothing else but her expression made me awkward. Yes I am not white.

She saw it as a personal move and declined.

I am a girl by the way. I just simply said would you like to have a free drink like cola zero or sprite? But the way she made face, it made me awkward

For some people excepting free stuff is a way of showing weakness.
Maybe she didn't want her child to see her rely on the kindness of others.
•

Many people don't like cola or sweet drinks. I for example won't drink it even if you give it free.

Hm, it might be that she was doing some standard complaining (which is a very useless thing to do) and was shocked at you taking her seriously. I would not think too much about what is going on between her and her son ("kid, don't you dare say we need it/you want it!", maybe) you cannot know.
It does sound like an unpleasant situation: You took her complaining as the one thing you could do somehing about ("maybe she can use a free drink") and she reacted in a way that you could not decode, so you are assuming the worst. But the worst (what is the worst, she thinking "how can a mere fast food worker dare to imply that I am in need of a handout"?) is probably not true, you will not know either way, and you cannot change what is going on in her mind. You were kind and generous, that's all a person can do.

Asking is awkward. just asking what drink she wants, and just getting her a small one is another thing. Haha but clearly not a german. Germans cringe at the thought of giving ANYTHING away for free haha. You must be American or Canadian?

There is also the possibility that she was grimacing at her kid for an unrelated reason.
I've seen parents use that to non-verbally correct their child so many times.
If she was reacting to you, chances are she'd have hidden it until you couldn't see her.
