My favorite bit will always be when Pandreo meets Alear for the first time and he's like

"Ah it's the Divine Dragon"

".....THE DIVINE DRAGON?!?!?!"

u/TrueMystikX May 28 '26

I actually got to meet Pandreo's VA last month and said the same thing. He agreed, saying it was one of his favorite lines to record.

u/Mysticjosh May 28 '26

Ricco Fajardo is just a treasure of a man.

u/high_king_noctis May 29 '26

So we need to watch out for thieves trying to steal him?

u/commondenomigator May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

"The Divine Dragon?"

Alear squeezes a tube of toothpaste onto their head

"ALEAR THE DIVINE DRAGON?!"

u/stupled May 28 '26

A Divine Dragon?<puts on hat> Alear the Divine Dragon?

u/NerdNuncle May 28 '26

Don’t forget Kagetsu’s “Oooh, shiny crystal!”

Think someone forgot to take their Ritalin. hahaha

u/eligood03 May 29 '26

A dragon? sees toothpaste hair The DIVINE DRAGON?!

u/Mijumaru1 May 28 '26

10/10 joke, and it isn't even a random throwaway gag since Alear has an actual reason for being afraid of the corrupted.

u/eshy752_ May 29 '26

in fairness I'm surprised more of the FE lords that fight zombies aren't offput by fighting them

u/tangocat777 May 29 '26

It is kinda crazy how in Thracia you can end up fighting Deadlords who are the animated corpses of your homies that you didn't save, and nobody bats a eye at it.

u/Loose-Resolution6532 May 29 '26

J'ai fait une seule fois la run sans spoil, je n'ai pas pour habitude de perdre des gens... J'ai presque envie de tuer tout ceux qui ne feront pas partie du chapitre final pour les affronter maintenant 🥹

u/tangocat777 May 29 '26

I only ever did a single mostly-blind run. Had no clue that you could save Dagdar and was very surprised to see him on the enemy side with a new name.

u/Loose-Resolution6532 May 29 '26

u/JusticTheCubone May 29 '26

tbf, I think most of them are, somewhat?

Like, in Valentia and Magvel, they're just a thing that... somewhat regularly occurs in the world, though I guess in most cases we don't know for sure wether they're actually revived dead people or just creatures that appear in the form of undead people, with the exception of the ruins of Thabes' lower floors.

In Awakening, Lissa at least seems terrified by the Risen, and even Chrom is put off iirc despite still choosing to fight, kinda helps that the Risen they face at first arrive through very conspicuous future portal, rather than just being a group randomly creeping out of the forest or smth. Even then the Risen somewhat stay a topic when we go to meet Emmeryn iirc, so they're also not just completely glossed over until they reappear under Aversas control (I think before then we generally go back to fighting Plegians and bandits and stuff?).

I guess in Fates you could say both the Faceless and Vallite soldiers take the place of "zombies"? The Vallite soldiers definitely freak people out, and of course they become a bigger point in Revelations. As for the Faceless, pretty sure it's even when Corrin first meets them in the Prologue that they freak out at seeing one, while for the Hoshidans they're honestly a pretty regular opponent, sent by Nohr.

And then of course the Corrupted in Engage.

Aside from that, there's the Deadlords in FE4 and 5, and the Morphs in the endgame of FE7, where the Deadlords are kinda just... not talked about at all... while I think the revived Morphs are acknowledged, but I don't think any of the party members especially freak out about fighting the undead (although in this case, it might also just be because they already fought other Morphs throughout the game, so... there might be less of a shock due to that?). And that should be all of them. So... most of them are actually offput about them at the very least, even if they aren't straight up afraid of them like Alear.

u/shadowgamer19 May 29 '26

If I saw a bunch of monster knights I would want to run away to

u/AlveinFencer May 28 '26

That was the moment I thought, "You know, I might end up liking this Alear guy."

u/Pyrrhic_Pragmatist May 29 '26

I liked it just because it may have been tactically sound to flee. Facing an unknown enemy, moments after waking in what's supposed to be a safe place. Unsure of their strength or their numbers. And half your party being of questionable combat ability (which later became evident, despite later redeeming themselves)

Being completely serious, almost every lord or MC always chooses fight. Leaning heavily on plot armor to carry them to victory. Under the circumstances, I feel it made sense to retreat, just as Eirika and Seth did until making a stand made sense.

Alear nonetheless performed well in the fight, but I think he or she needed the practice battle with Lumera to get less uncomfortable around Corrupted. Well, arguably Clanne and Framme needed it more, but still..

u/screenwatch3441 May 29 '26

Alear: we’ll gather our forces and initiate a counter attack!

only clanne and framme appears

Alear: Gather our forces… with the people above the age of 11… wait, seriously, this is it?

u/JusticTheCubone May 29 '26

Being completely serious, almost every lord or MC always chooses fight. Leaning heavily on plot armor to carry them to victory.

tbf generally it's not just plot armour. Like, most of the time we start out with trained soldiers or fighters in our employ. Like, Marths army is Jagen, Cain and Abel as iirc two contenders to the royal guard, and Gordin, who is a bit more green than the other two. The point stands for Alm, bringing his regular villager friends, and also for Celica I guess since she just brought her friends along, even if they are capable mages. FE3 also starts with a slightly lower powered crew than FE1 I'd say, since I think they're mostly fresh trainees at first? But FE4 has knights that were left in charge of Chalphy while Byron was gone at war. Of course that means they probably weren't their elite soldiers, since those would've probably been with Byron, but still nothing to scoff at. FE5 seems more along FE2s lines, but with them actually being resistance fighters, trained by Finn and Eyvel who are definitely elite fighters, they should be quite capable. FE6 mirrors FE1, although Roys Gordin-equivalent in Wolt seems actually way more trained as a knight than Gordin, FE7... depends on who we're looking at, I guess, Lyns legion would be pretty underpowered, but Eliwood and Hectors armys seem somewhat equal to Marths, their iffiest cases are Dorcas and Bartre, who aren't trained soldiers but both seem to have experience fighting as lower mercs, of course Dorcas as part of Lyns army before... and then Rebecca, who is completely inexperienced basically. FE8 starts you out with Seth, Renais' strongest soldier, and then has you meet up with Frelian soldiers, Gilliam who in-universe seems to be quite strong, and Franz who admittedly is still relatively fresh iirc. FE9 starts you out with a mercenary group, trained by one of the strongest guys in the place, with 2 former trained soldiers. Dawn Brigade is once again where it starts looking rough... and then Awakening you get the elite fighting force of the kingdom again. Fates... kinda depends on where you put the start, with Corrins buttlers and maids? Or after the route split. Because before route split is pretty rough... and honestly, so are Conquest and Revelations... but Birthright is pretty good, I guess, with Sakuras retainers, and Kaze and Rinkah iirc right off the bat. Even Azura can be seen as a big powerhouse, even if she's not really a fighter. It's just 3 Houses where you're kinda dragged down by having to take care of a class of rookie fighter students, even if many of them have Crest-based superpowers, and with Byleth basically being the strongest merc around. And then Engage, where Vander is an experienced knight... but Clanne and Framme not so much, they are basically barely fighters at all at the start.

u/Pyrrhic_Pragmatist May 30 '26

It's not just about the starting combat ability in each game, but the foes they are up against.

In Sacred Stones, Seth may have been the strongest knight in Renais, but the country was collapsing, the capital had just fallen, and you had Valter and his attack squad coming at you, with a princess to defend.  There's not a question of Seth's skill, but escape was the only answer.

In contrast, Three Houses, your team is a class of military academy students. Wet behind the ears perhaps, but against petty thieves, bandits, or other students, the danger is minimum.

So as for Vander. Perhaps he assumed Alear was incredibly strong. But as the most experienced fighter there, he should have known that against such a fearsome, unknown entity as the Corrupted, with no knowledge of their strength or numbers, that the best course of action was to make a run for the castle, at most fighting the ones that matter. (Kind of like what Auron said in FFX) Alear had been asleep his entire tenure as 32nd steward. Vander's first battle decision should not have been to fight (and die) in a blaze of glory, but to ensure Alear makes it out safely, and challenge only the foes that get in the way of that. To his credit though.. he didn't make the first charge. But his battle cry got the 33rd stewards riled up and basically captured or cornered and unarmed.. so not a great start

u/Shradow Jun 10 '26

Alear being the straight man/woman to a variety of weirdos is a great dynamic.

u/WhiteNinjii May 28 '26

Engage can be genuinely funny when it wants to be…it also can be funny when it’s not trying to be XD

u/ProfessionalMrPhann May 28 '26

"I wanna be a good dragon" was way funnier than it had any right to be

u/Minecraftman6969420 Jun 04 '26

A anything that comes out of Zelkov’s mouth absolutely falls under both

u/Bhatoh May 31 '26

i find the anime opening super corny

u/dachawon May 28 '26

My favorite one will always be:

Zelkov: There is nothing quite so isolating as pain.

Zelkov: It cannot be explained. The only window to understanding it is experience.

Zelkov: Does that mean we are destined to be strangers to one another?

Zelkov: Not at all. For we possess the gift of wisdom, by which we may intuit what we cannot see.

Zelkov: I have distilled this wisdom to its essence. I have corked it within this tincture.

Zelkov: This vessel encapsulates the light which will dispell the dark fog of your isolation.

Ivy: ...

Ivy: I'm sorry, what is happening? What is this?

Zelkov: Headache medicine.

u/MaxtheLeoSimp May 28 '26

I honestly really like what a coward Alear comes off as at the start of the game. Sure they aren’t exactly the peak of character development amongst the lords of the franchise, but it humanises them in a way I wish they went about for some of the other avatars.

u/Quijas00 May 28 '26

Do people call Alear an avatar? I know they’re a bit on the self-insert side but they have a clear personality and aren’t customizable outside of silly hats.

u/MaxtheLeoSimp May 28 '26

Given you choose their name, gender and birthdate at the start of the game, they do quality as an avatar. Although I definitely agree they are much much less of a blank slate than someone like Kris or Byleth.

u/Delicious_Account_26 May 28 '26

Shez and Alear really did pull us CLEAR away from the Avatar being a blank slate, thank God.

u/Darknight3909 May 28 '26

Kris and Robin and Corrin were very much their own characters. its just Byleth that was really a blank slate.

u/Delicious_Account_26 May 28 '26

I more so mean that it's a good thing Shez and Alear brought us away from blankslates cause can you imagine if they took the wrong lesson from Three houses and started making EVERY main character a blank slate?

u/Darknight3909 May 28 '26

don't worry fortune waves has time to show they learnt the wrong lesson. : )

u/Crimson_Raven May 28 '26

You stop that

u/Bluelore May 28 '26

Personally I didn't even mind Byleth that much since they do make it a part of their character that they are rather stoic. Like other characters do comment on how Byleth doesn't show many emotions, to the point that it sometimes drifts into feeling unnatural (like the fact that Byleth never cried before this game, not even as a baby).

u/Mexipika May 28 '26

Yeah Byleth has a whole ass background and past, it's pretty much impossible to self insert

Robin i think is the only one that's self insertable because their upbringing is gone and has the chance to restart their life

u/Rakshire May 28 '26 edited May 29 '26

Maybe. But even with that they have a pretty developed personality that doesn't necessarily mesh with a self insert character.

My only complaint is that Byleth doesn't really have a voice, outside combat shouts (and maybe nods too much). The other avatars respond more during their support conversations.

u/Loltoheaven7777 May 29 '26

i think its like a kris undertale game where you are lead to believe they are a blank slateat first but its slowly revealed how much of a character they actually are

u/ArekuFoxfire :M!Byleth: May 28 '26

Byleth wasn't even a blank slate if you get down to it, other characters in that game talked about their personality all the time and it was shown even more in three hopes.

I don't think any avatar except maybe kris and Mark has ever been a blank slate.

u/Callyourmother29 May 29 '26

Byleth was just boring tbh

u/screenwatch3441 May 29 '26

I don’t even think thats inherently the problem, because the idea that Byleth is this borderline emotionless character that develops more human emotion by his interactions with his students make a boring character in an interesting development. The issue is having everyone talk about how amazing he is and the emotional pillar for many characters while being relatively emotionless. Its like if everyone’s pillar they rely on was chat gpt.

u/Callyourmother29 May 29 '26

Also the characters keep talking about how byleth is opening up more, but we don’t actually see that in their interactions. The ChatGPT comparison is so apt lol

u/YanFan123 May 29 '26

FodlanGPT

u/ArekuFoxfire :M!Byleth: May 29 '26

Can’t say i agree at all but you’re welcome to that opinion naturally.

u/Quibbrel May 28 '26

... =|

... =(

... =)

Peak Byleth interactions.

u/FriedChickenCheezits May 28 '26

I love when Byleth has a physical reaction to something mundane then goes stonefaced while the world falls apart. Clearly that time in the sauna was far more devastating to The Ashen Demon than watching the Grim Reaper threaten to kill them

u/MageofSpaceGhost May 29 '26

Have you ever been to a sauna with your life on the line?

u/Darknight3909 May 29 '26

tbf people threatening to kill them is likely just Tuesday for Byleth. they likely heard plenty of threats on the job as a merc. meanwhile an personal moment at an sauna? completely uncharted territory.

u/JusticTheCubone May 29 '26

ironic that you bring them up especially, considering that compared to Byleth, Shez and Alear they are basically the most customizeable, in appearence, class and even growths to an extent.

u/Darknight3909 May 29 '26

and they were still proper characters like Alear and Shez unlike Byleth.

u/YanFan123 May 29 '26

Corrin is more customizable so definitely an avatar. Byleth, Shez, Alear? Nope

u/Darknight3909 May 29 '26

it was about being an blank slate not customizable. corrin is not an blank slate.

u/YanFan123 May 29 '26

I just meant that being a blank slate is not the only attribute of an avatar

u/Darknight3909 May 29 '26

the argument was about blank slate avatars being bad. not what is an avatar.

u/YanFan123 May 29 '26

And it was part of the avatars discourse

I just didn't answer elsewhere because that comment seemed the most relevant about talking about all of them as a whole

→ More replies (0)

u/omfgkevin May 28 '26

Now just waiting on Persona to follow... Metaphor "sort of" did but they did still snuck in the classic "doesn't speak and randomly does" so they still talk like they are super stilted.

Fortunes weave might go full voiced, but we still don't know anything about the "kinda looks like she might be the protag isekai'd" girl or if it's a fakeout and our boi Cai is the MC.

u/Carbon_fractal May 28 '26

Next they should pull clear away from having an avatar at all.

u/zacroise May 28 '26

Let me choose the lord’s class before or during the game and I’m fine with no avatar

u/Broken_Moon_Studios May 29 '26

I really want a Female Troubadour/Valkyrie Lord, even if that's not her default class.

u/TwoWayWindow May 28 '26

honestly, I'm more into just being "that guy" like how it was in FE7.

u/Gamer4125 May 28 '26

I hope not

u/Tuskor13 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

It's interesting how there are about as many fully customizable avatars are there are avatars who you can just put in a cool suit and nothing else. To what I understand, Kris is wildly customizable, then after them Robin has three distinctly different body types for both male and female Robin, then Corrin gets a bit less with only 2 body types for both Male and Female Corrin, then after that both Alear and Byleth are all but their own character aside from being able to change their name and birthday.

Part of me is curious if Fortune's Weave will continue the trend of "pick a name and go" avatars, or if it'll go back to more customization. Hell, a small part of me wonders if Fortune's Weave will outright say "Nah, you play as Cai" and not have an avatar at all.

u/eshy752_ May 29 '26

Byleth really isn't a blank slate either, they just don't verbally talk even when you choose words for them to say (though they still talk in battle so)

u/Ros80101 May 29 '26

People see Byleth having very clear thoughts on characters and events from the word go but bc the presentation is weird with said thoughts not being voiced out, people think there's nothing there, which is kinda bad faith?

Must we ignore Byleth clocking the House Leaders at the start, which is one of several showcases of their perceptiveness? Or when they mention to Dorothea in their C support that she's seeing a different person than before, which is something only Byleth was aware of.

Even besides that, Byleth's dry humor comes out a lot over the course of the game, and their support with Alois highlights how Byleth truly is Jeralt's child. Not to mention how Byleth is consistently shown to be very responsible and can be stern with some characters like Linhardt. Really, I could go on and on.

All in all, there's always been plenty to Byleth, but plenty don't want to engage with it properly bc the presentation was initially jarring

u/PuddingSundae May 29 '26

Hearing him talk and express his reactions to past events in engage was quite the shock

u/Icy_List961 May 28 '26

yeah I still don't like player insert avatars but I'll take shez or alear all day over byleth

u/Quijas00 May 28 '26

I think every lord should be allowed to trans their gender, but I will give on the name and birthday part.

u/friends-with-fishies May 29 '26

I thought you were talking about Kris from deltarune and I was like NOOO THEY'RE THEIR OWN PERSONNN Lol

u/Xalrons1 May 28 '26

All MCs/Avatars should be this way going forward. Maybe its just me but Alear's full voice acting makes me very happy

u/Sword_of_Dusk May 28 '26

I like the voice acting, but I hate that it means an avatar can never be referred to by name. At least let me hear their name used if I stick with the default one.

u/Misticsan May 28 '26

it means an avatar can never be referred to by name

This shouldn't be a problem even with voice acting. I still think that being able to name the avatar but not customize their apperance (other than choosing their gender) is a step back.

I wouldn't care if I couldn't name Robin, Corrin, Byleth or Alear (in fact, I always given them their default names), but I miss Robin's and Corrin's character customization.

u/DarthOmix May 28 '26

Or do the Fallout 4 thing with Codsworth and have a short list of voiced ones.

Though I can see that being expensive the more characters it applies to.

u/Mellow_Zelkova May 28 '26

All Fire Emblem player avatars either have a clear personality, have limited customizability, or both.

u/Yojimbra May 28 '26

I thought it was if you could change their name they were an Avatar, since you could name them what you want and people might not know their canon names.

u/WeFightForever May 29 '26

Being able to change the protagonists name is a standard JRPG feature. You can rename the protagonist in multiple final fantasy games, and no one would ever call Cloud or Tidus Avatars. In some JRPGs, you can even rename all party members.

u/Yojimbra May 29 '26

But in Fire Emblem you can only rename the one, which is the avatar. I should have added you can also choose their gender.

Did you know that in FFX the only characters you can name are Summons?

u/WeFightForever May 29 '26

That's not true. You can name Tidus

u/Yojimbra May 29 '26

And Tidus is a?

u/GladiatorDragon May 28 '26

There’s nothing that mechanically sets them apart from Byleth. If Byleth is one, Alear is too.

u/cyberchaox May 28 '26

They do. Byleth too. Fire Emblem fans are so used to not even being able to rename characters that they think any character who can be renamed is an Avatar.

u/Quijas00 May 28 '26

I mean Byleth obviously does but Alear actually has the benefit of saying things and having a personality

u/Quijas00 May 28 '26

Idk why I’m being mean to Byleth I’m sorry

u/NerdNuncle May 28 '26

I don’t think Alear’s a coward at all

Alear only just awoke, in an unfamiliar land and faced with an unfamiliar foe.

Vander’s an older man, Clanne and Franme are teenagers at best, Alear’s an amnesiac and no one has the equipment nor skills for a prolonged fight

Running was the smart play here, and a strategy Lumera employed when she arrived

u/BloodyBottom May 29 '26

Yeah, I don't really get why people read this as cowardly. Alear is calm and dignified, and logically explains their reasons. The joke is clearly on Vander, who is betrayed by his expectations.

u/Darthkeeper May 29 '26

One of Alear's main character flaws is they're not paticularly the bravest person especially for someone meant to be a leader. Though a lot of people tend to heavily exaggerate or miss that part entirely and call them a mary sue.

u/BloodyBottom May 29 '26

One of Alear's main character flaws is they're not paticularly the bravest person especially for someone meant to be a leader.

How so? People talk about Alear like they're a Scooby Doo-style "mess everything up through cowardice and only lock in to clean up your mess and save everybody when things are at their absolute worst" character, but even this scene isn't like that. Alear calmly suggests a tactical retreat, but when Framme and Clanne jump the gun Alear jumps in to save them without a second thought or bit of protest. Vander even says "go and run, I'll take care of this" and Alear says "no way, the situation has changed and running is wrong now". It could not be framed much more heroically, and there really are not any other examples in the main plot I can think of that represent their supposed fearfulness other than a quick admission that they are afraid of the corrupted but can fight them without issue.

u/Panory May 29 '26

If anything, the moment the game tries to sell as Alear screwing everything up is the exact opposite, recklessly rushing into the cathedral even when cautioned against it after Marth read the script.

u/PuddingSundae May 29 '26

There's even the very real moment in their support with Diamant where he has to save them from a surprise corrupted attack. Diamant is confused at their helplessness given their history on the battlefield, but then Alear explains it in that they have time to prepare mentally and steel themselves on the battlefield, as the corrupted are expected, whereas being confronted with that fear unexpectedly can be overwhelming.

u/JunkoNull May 28 '26

Yeah, this game gave me legit laughs, from the "...Come again." when we met Yunaka the 1st time and everything about Ivy, especially her blunt "I love you." to Alear-

u/Doctor_Crossing May 28 '26

Ivy's B supports with both Zelkov and Panette are peak comedy

u/Almainyny May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

Zelkov’s B support with Ivy had my sides hurting from how absurdly silly it was.

u/Candy_Warlock May 28 '26

Headache Medicine

u/NerdNuncle May 28 '26

Ivy’s “…’the doodad drawer’?” kills me every time. Wifey was done at that point and I can’t blame her

u/GlitchWarrior121 May 28 '26

Alear is an incredible character stuck in a game that worships them to a fault - which is exactly why they work, because they're just trying to live a normal life they don't need or even WANT Framme calling out how shiny their sweaty ass is

ok maybe not incredible but better than almost the entire rest of the cast in the first act

u/Broken_Moon_Studios May 29 '26

"I am not the messiah!"

"Only the true messiah denies his divinity!"

"WHAT!? Alright, I am the messiah!"

"HE IS THE MESSIAH!!!"

"NO, BUG OFF!!!"

u/sylinmino May 29 '26

They are my favorite avatar character in the series for that reason.

There's a sorta self awareness where they are the first FE avatar MC that is actively noticing how weird it is that people worship them (not the first time), and actually pushes back from how weird it is. It is really charming.

u/GlitchWarrior121 May 29 '26

honestly I barely see Alear as an avatar, I just see them as someone whose name/sex/birthday you can adjust to your liking

sure, this implies they're your self-insert. but like I subconsciously self-insert into Alm every time I play Echoes and he has none of that

u/MonkeysxMoo35 May 28 '26

Ivy is genuinely one of my favorite Fire Emblem characters because she’s just so funny. It’s really helped by her introduction making her out to seem like she’ll be this much more serious, darker character only for the rug pull when she joins your side and it’s revealed that she’s actually an incredibly awkward and socially inept due to her upbringing. I get saying an Engage character being one of my favorites might get some strange looks pointed my way. But what can I say? I just love my girlfails.

u/Mexipika May 28 '26

Citrine's "It's a pebble! :D " no matter what cracks me up

u/Roritwo May 28 '26

"What a thrill! No cost. No worth. I quite literally stumbled upon the perfect gift for you!"

u/Use_the_Falchion May 28 '26

The way the camera slants along with Alear and Alfred’s eyes when they meet Yunaka will always make me laugh.

Same with Timerra very badly calling out about how defenseless she is to lure bandits into a(n obvious) trap.

And with Timerra forcing Ivy to sing.

u/FleaLimo May 28 '26

I will be bitcher #1 about FE writing being inconsistent and not being a fan of its attempts at humor/fan service but sometimes a good bit is a good bit and I have to respect it.

u/wheeltribe May 28 '26

The timing and camera panning is just impeccable.

u/DarthOmix May 28 '26

Vander's expression really helps as well.

u/wheeltribe May 28 '26

It's the look of thousand years of folklore about a brave warrior he's sworn to protect vanishing in an instant.

u/Moon_Dark_Wolf May 28 '26

The funniest, though probably unintentional joke modern Fire Emblem ever told was when Elise, after watching Camilla fail to woo men in Conquest goes

“That can only mean one thing. They hate Nohr…or women…or just Norhian Women.”

u/ProfessionalMrPhann May 28 '26

The "X, Y, X+Y" formula usually at least gives me a chuckle

u/Ptdemonspanker May 28 '26

That “huh?” felt too real.

u/DhelmiseHatterene May 28 '26

It’s the perfect mix of comedic timing & foreshadowing something about the main character! You got Alear who first breaks expectations that they aren’t all what they appear to be despite the Stewards saying otherwise. And overall it is a smart way of going about it since they don’t have a clue what Corrupted are initially.

u/SuperNotice7617 May 28 '26

Is the bravery that knows no equal in the room with us right now?

u/cae37 May 28 '26

Zelkov and Ivy's second support is one of my favorite gags in the entire series. Zelkov delivers a dramatic exposition on this mystical concoction he's preparing only to reveal, completely deadpan, that it's just headache medicine after Ivy's prompt lol.

u/Character_Parfait_99 May 28 '26

Alcryst suddenly groveling once he realized who Alear and Alfred is was also great(at least for me).

u/wheeltribe May 28 '26

I also loved that part 😂

u/PuddingSundae May 29 '26

Alcryst is just great in general. I'm normally not a fan of characters like that, but his self awareness really makes it for me.

u/BlackroseBisharp May 29 '26

I'm mixed on him. He has a enough good traits for me to not dislike him but I also cant stand that type of character like that

Unless they're not very chatty like Marianne

u/caiglee May 29 '26

Alcryst's personality is so funny to me, because in-game, he's like my walking Nuke who eradicates every enemy coming his way from a minimum of three tiles. Bro should have some confidence, he could solo my whole army

u/Tsunderefckboi May 28 '26

Yunaka: I got a killer's eyes

Alear: What?

Yunka: Killer eyes! YUP my vision is great 😅

u/GladiatorDragon May 28 '26

The divine dragon ran away, bravely ran away away!

When danger reared its ugly head he bravely turned his tail and fled.

Yes the divine dragon turned about and gallantly he chickened out!

Swiftly taking to his feet, he beat a very brave retreat,

Bravest of the brave, the divine dragon!

… doesn’t flow quite as well, does it?

u/JoaoSiilva May 28 '26

It's the camera work for me!

u/Doctor71400 May 28 '26

Alfred burning his mouth from Veyle's spicy food is absolutely hilarious to me

u/DhelmiseHatterene May 28 '26

I’d like to imagine Alfred’s VAs actually ate something super spicy x10 just so they could deliver the lines in the most funny and realistic manner

u/LuckySalesman May 28 '26

Engage's corny ass obvious spoof writing be so fire when you don't got a bitch in your ear telling you it's the worst thing known to man.

u/Payton_Xyz May 28 '26

My only actual complaint about that part of Alear's character is that it takes so long to figure out why they're afraid of the Corrupted. Don't get me wrong, their reasoning is completely justified, but it's a small blurb we're told. Maybe if there were more hints it would have hit better for me

u/Mega_Mango May 28 '26 edited May 29 '26

Honestly, moments like those are what remind me that Alear was a pretty decent protagonist despite being a God or whatever 😂

u/theorist_rainy May 28 '26

It’s an interesting lil thing to notice especially when you get to the xenologue and all the folks there are like “Alear, please stop trying to fight things; we are losers”

u/Noob_Guy_666 May 28 '26

Alear: I just woke up, I'm not fighting!

Framme: Divine Dragon, clip this!

Clanne: Y-yeah!

ALEAR: GOD DAMMIT!

u/GrouchySquatman May 29 '26

I love how despite Alear has such an odd design, they remain one of the most levelheaded people in the entire game and are opposed to random strangers simping over the fact that they are essentially Dragon Jesus.

u/Accomplished_Kale509 May 28 '26

Honestly what made me like Alear. Say what you want, but their cowardice and straight up being a normal person amongst the cast is endearing.

u/CrazyDKA May 29 '26

"As you wish Divine Dragon. ...Did the Divine Dragon tell me to run away?"

u/kevinsagadx May 28 '26

Honestly I wish alear was more of a coward in the beginning of the game to show how much Marth and the emblems help them

u/RevolverCerberus May 29 '26

The moment when I thought they were self-conscious about their writing quality and the game was going to be an intentional comedy game. Boy, how utterly wrong that presumption was.

u/Koreaia May 28 '26

Alear has such great characterization- it's just the way others react to them causing issues.

F!Alear's B support with Zelkov is my favorite thing in the entire franchise.

u/OsbornWasRight May 28 '26

Everyone praising the Alear cowardly scene when the devs admitted they scrapped that aspect of the character, kept this scene in anyway, and added nothing to replace it.

u/omfgkevin May 28 '26

Yeah you could maybe blame Nintendo for not letting go full send on w/e they were cooking (even though we know it's probably going to be RAW), they still left this in after Nintendo told them to dial it back and just kinda... cut the thread rather than smooth it out better.

But considering how the plot is, this is the least of it's concerns lol.

u/Panory May 29 '26

"Hey boss, we decided that making her more of a goofy girlfailure would be a more fun direction for the character. Should we change the introductory scene where she walks towards the camera all sultry and threatens to destroy the player's soul?"

"Nah, leave it in, unchanged."

u/Roliq May 29 '26

It is funny seeing the comments about how this made them like Alear when this was literally what the writers removed and is probably the only time they act like this since it was very early, probably the same thing as the dream sequence of the beginning that never comes up later

u/Refracting_Hud May 28 '26

This interaction right at the beginning of the game endeared me to the Alears permanently.

u/Icy_List961 May 28 '26

this one was pretty good. I do like that vander eventually lays off it a bit, but the other two clowns are insufferable for the entire game.

I heard that line for the first time and I started laughing a LOT.

u/eshy752_ May 29 '26

I pre-ordered the game and knew from this line that the game was gonna be peak

u/kirby172 May 29 '26

I like the bit that I think comes right after this:

Alear: "We all have to get out of here and keep ourselves save!"

Clanne and Framme: "OK! We'll sacrifice ourselves to save you!"

Alear: "Wait, what?! No!"

u/I_like_fried_noodles May 29 '26

Bro that's Reinhardt ma bou

u/BlackroseBisharp May 29 '26

Alear's a great protag

u/PurchaseGlittering11 May 30 '26

Everyones going to hate me for this. But I really hated the dialogue and stuff in this game when I played as male Alear. I hated this bit for him choosing to run instead. But with female Alear, a lot of the diaglogue that Alear has makes so much sense. Actually enjoyed it so much more as female Alear.

u/wheeltribe May 30 '26

Yeah, I've watched my wife play through as female Alear and she's way less whiny.

u/PurchaseGlittering11 May 30 '26

Maybe its the voice actor... But in my opinion, Alear has been written as a female. I don't think they change the dialogue at all between male and female iterations. It just makes a lot more sense as Alear being a woman. I do play it in sub japanese so maybe that makes a difference

u/Bhatoh May 31 '26

I dislike heavily Engage, HOWEVER, Marni it's my fav character in the game. I love the bit where she scolds Mauvier after Rosado and Goldmary left their ship: "See?, this is why I can't stand you!, you never praise me and you are no fun at all!". That made me laugh for a while

u/MechaMalz May 31 '26

Honestly I found Engage's writing to be at its best when it's being comedic. This scene, Alcryst's introduction, meeting the desert kingdom royals etc.

It's when the game tries to be dramatic that it tends to fall flat on its face for me in the writing department.

u/PandaNinja19 Jun 02 '26

I died laughing here! This is when I knew Saturday Cartoon Fire Emblem Game was gonna be one of my faves!

u/NoFold4575 Jun 02 '26

Well his smart i suppose

u/moonflowermemories Jun 10 '26

This was literally the moment that made me stop playing the game, lol

The Jostar secret technique

u/Ok-Barracuda457 May 29 '26

I really like this scene andI love how you can figure out early Alear's lineage thanks to her phobia to the Corrupted here and in Diamant's support, and with the way Lumera and Sombron summon emblems. It all feels natural to stumble into. And when Gris figures it out himself and spills the beans, it felt genuinely satisfactory, specially going back and replay those scenes!

Other FE games have tried doing twists, but with how straightforward events play out, there isn't time to piece together the evidences and make yourself an idea, like in Gaiden, where the reveal just happens and somehow 3 lines of dialogue from NPCs 2 were all the set-up...

Or with the sheer incompetence of the modern writing, making any intrigue die immediately... Like with Robin, Corrin, Flame Emperor, SoV Alm...

So yeah, I this one

u/Isurak May 28 '26

Honestly Alear in first few chapters almost tricked me into thinking the character writing in engage was good

u/TheForceUnleashes May 29 '26

Only good joke in the whole game^

u/Greedy_Winner822 May 28 '26

That does’t sound like a joke to me, its just bad writing.

u/LuckySalesman May 28 '26

The most obvious premise, setup, and punchline buildup ever

"Erm, this isn't a joke, actually."
