There might be spelling mistakes. I barely slept, English is my second language.
Holy moly. I'm so scared right now. I genuinely cannot stop crying.
Me and my sports team just did our annual trip where we go to a city and have fun as a team. It's good for getting to know your teammates on a more personal level.
The first reaction to our hostel room was absolute grimace. It was tiny and cramped. The bathrooms had mold.
Very bad first impression.
But hostels can be just for sleeping so whatever. I chilled on my bed for 10 minutes to settle down a little after the whole drive to the city we were staying in. I feel so stupid for doing that right now but what can I do about it?
We go out, have some free time to walk around the city and eat. Then we go do our activity the trip organisers had planned. Me and a teammate head back to the hostel because this activity is too scary for her and I had a headache all day.
Something was said by one of the organisers about the next days schedule so we set an alarm for 7:15 am and go to sleep.
We get woken up at around 3:30 am by a teammate and I'm just in a daze cause I had no idea what was going on. My thought was "but we set an alarm?? Why are they here??"
Only to be told bedbugs were found in multiple rooms and we have to put everything that had touched the beds in garbage bags. We only saw one in our room I think and another room did all the tests to confirm whether the bugs are there and found nothing. But the other rooms had bedbugs all over them: the mattresses, the walls, etc.
I just recently had a bedbug scare with a family member possibly taking some home from vacation (lucky not!!) so I basically start panicking.
I get through the process and we sit at the hostel. There was a staff member and they were at least somewhat nice and put a movie on for us.
One of the trip organisers talks with this staff member where they found out this is a KNOWN PROBLEM. THEY KNOW THEY HAVE AN INFESTATION. But the owner just apperently doesn't care??? And worst of all, no one ever gets their money back either.
What a scam of a place.
And what's even worse. The staff members also live in the building, and are basically homeless without the job at the hostel.. I don't blame the staff members at all cause they're trying to do their best and they're practically backed into a corner.
Apparently on their off days they're busy trying to take care of the bed bugs.
I do feel for them. But it doesn’t make my group's situation better. I feel horrible for my teammates. We have diverse people in our teams (students, adults with jobs and kids, etc.) and if they just so happen to get the bugs inside they're practically doomed because these bugs are not easy or cheap to get rid off..
I'm so scared I brought them home due to the negligence of the owner. Any item that went on the trip is currently in the garden besides my phone, which I took out of the case and cleaned first.
I will throw out anything that has to be discarded but I'm just so scared right now. What if they're in my car? I had to transport my luggage somehow. I did check but not for *too* long. I'll check again tomorrow.
I did take the precaution and shook out all my clothes outside of the hostel before putting it back in my suitcase. Also shook that out of course.
I washed my hair three times and myself three times. I am so scared to bring it inside the house I live in but have been reassured we took every measure we could. But I genuinely just cannot stop crying.
What the f is wrong with that hostel owner. Who does this. Why is this even a thing. Why is this hostel allowed to be open?? They knew a sportteam was coming and didn't bother to inform us at all. They just takes people's money and go about their day as if they're not putting people into a health hazard.
I feel so bad for the organisers, because obviously they didn't plan on this happening. Our trip was cut short, only lasted two days instead of the full planning, because we refused to sleep another night in the hostel. And all hostels nearby enough were either sold out or rated so low we were NOT gonna take any chances, I checked together with the organisers and some others.
Thankfully we all got home safely and we could take some of the burden off of the organisers.. but this is genuinely traumatising.
What is wrong with this owner?????
