General Coffee Chat Do you actually log brews when dialing in a new bag? I’m trying to make that process less tedious

Whenever I open a new bag, I usually need a few brews before I find something I really like.
The problem is that I either rely on memory, or I start writing down enough parameters that it begins to feel like a spreadsheet.
So I’ve been building a small iOS app around a pretty narrow idea:
remember the last cup, change what matters, brew again, and gradually find what works for that bean.
The screenshots are from the version I’m working on now. When starting another brew, it carries over the previous recipe and shows how the last cup tasted, so you can make a small adjustment instead of starting from scratch.
I’m deliberately trying not to turn it into a super detailed coffee database.
I’ve tried a few similar apps but the workflow isn’t as intuitive as I wanted it to be.
I’m still building it, so I’m much more interested in criticism than promotion at this point.
A couple things I’d love to know:
When dialing in a new bag, do you actually keep track of previous brews?
Does this feel simple enough, or am I already asking you to record too much?
What would you remove from this flow?
Espresso is what I’m using in these screenshots, but I’m designing the same basic idea around pour-over as well.

Coffee Station Just got J64V grinder

It feels super premium for 430€ grinder. Everything is magnetic and toolless except adjusting indicator for grind size (it has two screws that hold grind size indicator ring)

Just used it for first time today and it has basically zero retention, still dieling it in but it feels great so far

Maintenance & Troubleshooting New Machine's Steam Wand Dripping Water While Pulling a Shot [Dedica EC885]

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a new Dedica EC885, about 4 days ago. I’ve only used it three times and ran half a reservoir through it for the initial out-of-the-box cleaning/flushing cycle.

I noticed that water drips from the steam wand whenever I pull a shot, even a blank shot through an empty pressurized basket just to pre-heat the group head.

Is this minor dripping normal behavior for the 885, or is my unit faulty, and I should return it?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Dual Boiler does not build up pressure [Sage Dual Boiler]

Sage Dual boiler with newly replaced solenoid, probes. Temperature is fine and no leaking. I use the same grind level as it was before. It used to build up pressure to 8-9 bars before the first drop, now it is all over the place like in the video. Any suggestions?

Coffee Station Printable for coffee station instructions

Upvotes

Hey. Does anyone has a nice printable where I can add the instructions for different coffee preparations.

For example double espresso, X beans, grinder setting, beans weight

Maybe with options for pour over too.

My parents are visiting, and I need printed instructions.

Equipment Discussion DC63 Conical Burrs

Upvotes

Can anyone find the 63mm conical red titanium burrs?

I needed to replace mine because I had the luck to have a little rock mixed with coffee beans and destroyed the burrs. Luckly the seller had a broken DC63 and swap the burrs from that one.

I searched the entire internet and found no info. The manufacturer (AVX) said that they will be available on their website in 3 months (is been more than 3 months).

Drinks & Recipes IPA coferment cappuccino

Post image
Upvotes

Today I have tried a new espresso bean I recently purchased. It is a mix of columbian castillo and pink bourbon. The castillo provides chocolate and nutty notes and a good body and the pink bourbon is a coferment with hopp and ipa yeast.

I am really pleasantly surprised about this coffe. The hopp notes comes through very clear, has a very nice floral, citrus notes. The after taste is almost like drinking beer.
Very enjoyable!

Drink is a regular cappuccino but with a double shot

Buying Advice Needed Espresso machine upgrade advice from Casabrews CM5418 [$400-800]

Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking for a midrange $500-700 new or used machine. I’m looking for temp stability, performance consistency, maybe pressure control. I’m currently using a Casabrews Cm5418 with an opus 2 grinder and have a few good roasters nearby for fresh beans. Just wondering how much I’m leaving on the table sticking with a beginner machine. I was looking at a Gaggia E24 (probably would get the standard level mods for pressure control), Lelita Anna, Turin Legato, etc that range of machines. I know I’d have to get a 58mm bottomless portafilter, puck screen and self leveling spring loaded tamper.

Thank you!

Buying Advice Needed Will I benefit from Dual Boiler [€1000-1200]

Upvotes

Hello,

Currently I have Lelit Anna Pl41TEM and I miss Preinfusion and better steam, and Temperature stability. I do maybe 2 or 3 coffees per day and I am quite ok with the Single Boiler workflow. Only when I have guests and have to do like 4-6 Cappuccinos its stressful but I manage, as i pull 4 Espresso shots and just steam two times. Also I cannot steam and pull a shot at the same time, the 30sec time saving and me missing the beautiful magic of the espresso flow :)

My question is to people from moved from single to dual boiler in similar conditions. Did you notice much difference?

My big negatives of the dual boilers are

-slow heat up time

-size (I dont have enough space)

-price

-difficult descaling

At the moment I am looking at:

Profitec GO 2.0

Upcoming Lelit Victoria 3

or

the new Lelit Elizabeth 3

General Coffee Chat New OPV = Happiness

My stock Gemilai Owl 🦉 was a pressure nightmare. I swapped out the plastic safety valve with a proper Vibiemme OPV and now it’s actually making proper espresso. Night and day difference. If I knew it would have made this much of a difference I would have changed it out before I pulled even one shot.

Humour Bucket of pre-ground coffee

Post image
Upvotes

Coffee experience at airport lounge in Ethiopia.

I witnessed the perfect puck prep process:
- keep your ground coffee in a big bucket
- fill the portafilter with a large spoon
- the spoon also serves as tamper, but just lightly press
- insert the portafilter into the espresso machine

Leaves a weird sensation on the teeth. The rest is as expected

Equipment Discussion 55mm LSM/ACS/Nurri Portafilter Question

Does anyone know if a portafilter for a 55mm (54.5mm) basket will fit a 54mm (53.5mm) basket? And if so, would there be any issue running that on the machine?

Buying Advice Needed Blind Shaker for Baratza Encore ESP Pro [$30]

Upvotes

I recently got a Baratza Encore ESP Pro and I am looking for a minimalist puck prep setup (as in not that many accessories or gadgets). Figured a blind shaker will be enough without needing WDT and distributor etc.

Does anyone have recommendations for a blind shaker that will fit into this grinder i know its a little bit narrow so I was wondering if someone already has experience with one they like.

Can you help me get unstuck as my machine has two error lights - red one and the white one. I've already descaled so not sure why it's stuck in this state. I tried unplugging, turned the switch off, and filled it with water to the max. What else can I try?

Equipment Discussion LeBrew burrs for cafe EK43

Upvotes

Hey coffee nerds, I’m looking to source some new burrs for our EK43 at the cafe I work at. Does anyone have experience with the 98mm LeBrew burrs? We mainly grind for light roast pour-over and batch brew, but sometimes get orders for light roast espresso too. It would be cool to buy the stock EK43 burrs but they’re almost $1000 in Canada 😯 any advice or insight would be super appreciated!

Buying Advice Needed Best automatic for [$1600] or less?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm looking for the best fully automatic espresso machine for around $1600. I mostly drink cortados/ cappuccinos so milk frother would be nice but can always get a separate frother. I'm looking for best espresso pulls, easiest to maintain and clean. Any suggestions would help. I also would want it to be a little bit more aesthetic

No Budget Issues - I am in USA

BREVILLE Oracle to High End Delonghi Switchers

I’m wondering how satisfied those that made the change are and their honest opinion about the quality of espressos and maintenance burdens. Thank you in advance.

Buying Advice Needed brewing accessories? [no budget]

Upvotes

I’m finally making the long, LONG overdue change from nespresso to a real espresso machine (don’t kill me, I know nespresso sucks. that’s why i’m changing!) After doing some research, I purchased the breville bambino plus and it will be here next saturday.

Looking through the sub, it seems the most common “beginner” coffee grinder recommended is the baratza encore ESP. Is this still the consensus entry level grinder?

There’s also…. so many espresso making accessories. the little needle thing, screens for over the espresso puck, a “bottomless filter”, etc. what is worth picking up? what should I wait on?

I do have a scale! a maestri house s2 espresso scale. no idea if it’s any good or not

any help is very appreciated. can’t wait to get started in this hobby!

Dialing In Help Why doesn’t my espresso merge into one stream? [Flair 58+2]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Whenever I pull shots of this espresso blend, the streams of coffee never merge into one stream. It’s also never coming out of the center. I use WDT and I have a self leveling tamper. My espresso ratios are also hitting the numbers. Getting about 40g in 30 seconds. Any thoughts?

The coffee is on the lighter end of medium roast-wise.
