Same order with Dash Pass vs without..

I was dumb enough to be paying this stupid subscription for so long without really caring to look too deep into it as long as I got the "benefits"

My cousin asked to order on my app today to get the discount but when she went to pay she said "why is it cheaper on mine?"

We compared both apps side by side.. same address, same store, same delivery window, etc and the price was still different

what kind of scam is this 😭 I'm definitely ending my subscription. I'm so annoyed

What is with all the moronic replies saying you didn’t order enough lol. The point is she should at the VERY LEAST be paying the same amount as someone without DashPass, not more.

u/Wr3ckless13 10h ago

Because that's how it works. It's says it in the first pic, "spend $12 and save". That is just how it works. I'm not disagreeing or agreeing.

u/TheDemoz 15h ago

I think the point people are making is that DashPass benefits don’t kick in until a certain order threshold is met.

So it is relevant how much OP is ordering. With the current order size, they effectively don’t have dashpass

u/theblenderr 15h ago

DashPass or not, 2 people ordering the exact same items at the exact same time to the exact same address should not be paying 2 different prices. The point is DashPass should (even if not giving you a discount) at the absolute least ensure that you don’t pay even higher prices than a regular customer unless you’re hitting a threshold. They’re essentially subsidizing your DashPass by charging you more on cheaper orders to then essentially giving you back your own money on the more expensive orders.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

THANK YOU! I was losing my mind because people weren't understanding this

u/TheDemoz 15h ago edited 11h ago

There’s two different, unrelated arguments you’re making here:

  1. Sure you can argue that two people should always pay the same price for the same online order, but that’s not what happens in real life, and not relevant to the argument that dashpass specifically resulted in a higher price
  2. The point is dashpass benefits don’t kick in until a threshold lol. You can argue all you want about what it “should” do, but DoorDash never claims anywhere that you get any benefits on orders below the threshold. Just because you disagree with what it should do, doesn’t mean it’s a scam or that other people are morons for pointing to the minimum threshold lol

u/theblenderr 15h ago

No lol, I’m not arguing two different things, I’ve been consistent in saying that everything I’ve described above should not be happening, especially the pricing discrepancies. Your argument is that “well you can argue that it shouldn’t happen, but it happens and they didn’t say it wouldn’t.”

Okay…? Lol

Not really an argument. I don’t need a read on the reality of what’s happening, I’m well aware of it, I’m just saying it shouldn’t be happening.

u/TheDemoz 14h ago

Yes you are.

You said "DashPass or not, 2 people ordering the exact same items at the exact same time to the exact same address should not be paying 2 different prices", that is one argument.

and

"DashPass should (even if not giving you a discount) at the absolute least ensure that you don’t pay even higher prices than a regular customer unless you’re hitting a threshold" which is a different argument

The first happens irrespective of a company having a subscription plan, and happens within each tier as well, as you noted in your other reply. It happens across all ecommerce. See: Convenience Fees, Airline Prices, Discounts, Promo Codes, etc...

The second is just your opinion on how you think DashPass should work.

Why are you guys being so dense. Dashpass only applies benefits after a specified order subtotal, which is clearly stated everywhere.

Since they didn’t hit the subtotal their DashPass benefits did not apply. Then, since the benefits weren’t applied, it was not a DashPass order and therefore was a non-DashPass order.

Both the OP and their cousin had non DashPass orders with different fee amounts. This is almost certainly explained by experimentation, which every single company that sells you online things does.

It’s so funny that everyone is acting like I’m defending it because I’m explaining what’s happening 💀

u/Prior-Impress-2624 Dasher (> 2 years) 4h ago

You FOOL. Someone who doesn’t pay for dash pass is paying a few dollars more than the person who subscribes to dash pass. The threshold is irrelevant. It’s the same order. It’s the same distance. It’s minutes apart. There should be a $0 difference PERIOD.

u/commandernono 9h ago

They aren't thinking, they're feeling. They WANT it to be fair. And you're wasting your time. Agree with you though, you're not crazy. They're dumb

u/McRibSucks 12h ago

If me and my friend both walk into walmart and buy the exact same things our total will be the same wtf are you smoking to say people don't pay the same prices

u/TheDemoz 12h ago edited 11h ago

Im not talking about walmart, im talking about online services, because DoorDash is an online service. Not to mention this practice is also being moved into brick and mortar retailers

My god instead of downvoting you guys can just spend 30 seconds googling it…

And I wasn't even talking about the price of items being purchased. Based on the context of the entire damn post, I'm obviously talking about additional service fees added

u/XenoPlays14 11h ago

This is illegal btw what door dash is doing. Stop licking the boots of a corporation you loser.

u/hometowncold 6h ago

Okay I'll take a run at this. You say yourself "since they didn't hit the subtotal their dash pass benefits weren't applied.... and therefore was a non-dashpass order" right. But one screenshot shows that the non-dashpass order of the same items is 12.55, and the "dashpass" is 14. The argument that everyone here but you is making is "why, and in what reasonable world should that be the case"

u/ihcoM_ 13h ago

You’re literally wrong dude

u/TheDemoz 13h ago edited 12h ago

Wrong about?

u/jedburghofficial 15h ago

It costs more with the pass. If they "effectively don’t have dashpass" it would cost the same as someone who didn't have a dashpass. The math isn't hard.

u/TheDemoz 15h ago

Correlation is not causation. I can pretty much guarantee if OP went and looked at the same order on some of their other family members phones / accounts, there would be multiple different sets of fees.

u/jedburghofficial 14h ago

I'm not saying you're wrong, but that's a pretty sensational claim. It would be illegal where I am. Do you have any idea what would make them decide to charge more or less for any given customer?

u/TheDemoz 14h ago

Where are you from? It’s probably not illegal.

It’s a super common thing done on the internet and is happening for most things you buy online. It’s just experimenting with different pricing to see how they affect the business and consumer trends

As for deciding who to target? It’s probably not what you think. Like it’s most likely not: “this person makes more money so we’re going to charge them a higher price”, but is more likely an aggregate: “how would order volumes and our companies profitability change if we were to change how we calculate fees” and then they’d segment people by broad criteria.

Typically for most of these types of tests, the most broad bucket will just be randomized, so that’s what can lead to you having a different price than someone directly next to you, even if everything else is the same, both accounts were just randomly selected to be in different buckets of the experiment. And then they will often make more granular buckets too. For example: “How would these 4 options of fee structures each individually affect dashpass users” and then also that same comparison done across non-dashpass users, etc…

If you want to read more you can just read up on A/B/n experimentation online

u/jedburghofficial 10h ago

I don't need to read more. My ex was a consumer lawyer.

u/TheDemoz 10h ago edited 9h ago

Literally just google it. My god you guys will do anything but fact check yourselfs LMAO.

Literally just go to google.com, type in “do companies in the US run experiments on pricing structures, which can lead to different people having different fees for the exact same service” and click enter

This is not that hard people

EDIT: user blocked me before I could reply to their most recent comment where they said they don’t live in the US, but for anyone wondering, this practice is legal in every single country DoorDash operates in: US/CA/AU/NZ. Just google it 😂😂

So this person has no idea what they’re talking about and is a clown for blocking me before I could reply lmfao. What a loser

u/jedburghofficial 9h ago

As I said, I'm not in the US. Google less, read more.

u/onionbreath97 9h ago

Ok? So then if the DashPass discount doesn't apply, the two orders should cost the same. Your answer doesn't explain AT ALL why the one without DashPass would be cheaper.

u/TheDemoz 8h ago edited 8h ago

Since they didn’t hit the subtotal their DashPass benefits did not apply. Then, since the benefits weren’t applied, it was not a DashPass order and therefore was a non-DashPass order.

Both the OP and their cousin had non DashPass orders with different fee amounts. This is almost certainly explained by experimentation, which every single company that sells you online things does.

A quick tldr what experimentation means in this context:

Essentially, to test how pricing affects outcomes like order volume, company profits etc.. they can run things such as A/B/n experiments to see how different groups in the different segments of their user base are affected by the different changes.

For example: "If we raise service fee minimums by 10 cents, how does that affect order volume and overall profitability? What if we raise it by 20 cents? What if we raise it by 30 cents?". Say something like that was being experimented on, then at any given time you'd have some subset of the customer base with the original fees, called the control group, and then some customers with 10 cent higher fees, some with 20 cent higher, some with 30 cent higher, which are each called treatment groups.

Then they use the data gathered by how each group of customers acted over time to decide which is the best long term strategy for the whole customer base, or a subset of it, to adopt. They do not run the experiments against the whole customer base one after another, they run them all at the same time against different subsets of the customer base.

This is a SUPER common practice, and basically every company who sells you anything over the internet does it, and is probably running hundreds or thousands of these types of experiments all at once, albeit not all of them will affect pricing.

Here's a blog post where DoorDash talks about challenges when running these types of experiments: https://careersatdoordash.com/blog/addressing-the-challenges-of-sample-ratio-mismatch-in-a-b-testing/

This sub is filled with morons OP so not the best place to ask. I sub mostly for entertainment. This is a collision of two problems:

  1. For DashPass to take effect, there's usually a minimum threshold for discounts on fees. Below that non-subscribers should be paying the same as other people overall. DashPass does benefit the user in that way, but only if you structure your orders to have it take effect.

  2. DoorDash and other similar services apply algorithmic pricing so that less price-sensitive users (i.e. people who DoorDash believes aren't as willing not to go through with a purchase based on subtle differences in price) get higher prices on certain items. Most people aren't lining up the same order across different devices at the same time, so they don't notice. This can take the form of altered base prices or targeted discounts (or lack thereof).

u/will-frazier 15h ago

And why is the tax different

u/SubjectKnowledge4850 14h ago

That's what I'm wondering 🤔

u/Smart-Leg-9156 4h ago

Because there's tax on the fees as well.

u/bexpat 14h ago

That’s what makes me think the items they have in the carts are not the same

u/XenoPlays14 11h ago

Bro is dumber than a box of rocks

u/daijaubu 9h ago

Why would I lie about this bro? My cousin just wanted to order some popcorn because she was craving it 💀

u/SorryTree1105 6h ago

Stop don’t answer the question. Why is the tax different? The same item would have the same tax.

u/will-frazier 15h ago

So the service fee is more for the dash pass subscribers?

u/sglewis 15h ago

There is a $15 minimum for anything to make sense with DoorDash or UberEats. By all means put $15 worth of food in a cart and come back.

u/daijaubu 15h ago

I'm not talking about the $15 minimum. Why was it more expensive on my end in the 1st place?

u/Pale_Sky5697 15h ago

2 different orders obviously, the tax alone proves that.

u/ExcitingFlatworm9572 13h ago

Tax doesn't work like that lmfao

u/ArchMageGeorgie 11h ago

Unless you are buying 21+ products^ many states put extra taxes on cannabis and alcohol. In my state you can’t have alcohol delivered however i can have weed gummies delivered 24/7 but other states allow alcohol delivery and DD does support it in applicable states.

Highly unlikely for that low of a subtotal though. Getting drunk and high aint cheap 🤣🤣🤣

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 11h ago

... Tax would be different on a different order with a different total. That's what they were saying.

u/ExcitingFlatworm9572 10h ago

Yeah and both orders have the same subtotal so tax wouldn't be different

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 10h ago

Some items are tax exempt.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

It was the same items. Kettle corn and regular popcorn on BOTH orders

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 9h ago

I think I figured it out. Tax is applied to the fees. You have higher fees, so the tax is higher.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

But why would I have higher fees? I tip every time I order AND I've been paying for dashpass since before I graduated 2 years ago

→ More replies (0)

u/Xxomar_666xX 13h ago

This is why I only get Dashpass with my credit cards, it’s free and I only order things that go above the required limit or stuff like that lol

u/daijaubu 9h ago

I only order over the limit so I can get free delivery, so I never even noticed I could possibly be paying more in other fees until this incident

u/Xxomar_666xX 9h ago

Yeah unfortunately DD is known for shitty tactics

u/Loose_Banana4073 15h ago

Soo exactly what are the benefits?

u/daijaubu 15h ago

Well before this, I blindly thought I'd get less fees I suppose. But it looks like I actually paid more while I was under the illusion of a deal when I'd get $0 delivery fees

u/jedburghofficial 14h ago

I read through this thread and thought a lot of people here aren't good with math. But there's at least a couple of people saying the fees do vary from person to person. You might have discovered a whole new rort by the company.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

That's the conclusion I came to as well, I just think it's a bit unfair to have others pay more for the same items and same drive time

u/peopleman_at_work 9h ago

What I want to know is how did the tax amount change if you ordered the same exact thing, and are paying the same subtotal…

u/imsogone 15h ago

Your order was less than $5 of course you aren't getting much of a discount.

u/sheeburashka 15h ago

It’s not “much of a discount”, it’s straight more expensive with DoorDash Pass.

I had similar happen to me with UberEats. They are all drawing every penny out of every crevice.

u/daijaubu 15h ago

It's not about the 0 delivery fee, I know it's too small to get it. It's just blatantly a different price for the EXACT same thing

u/spicybright 15h ago

They sometimes adjust prices per-person. Like if you order mc donalds at a certain time a lot they'll raise the price then because they know you'll still always order it.

u/jedburghofficial 14h ago

That's a big claim. I don't know about your location, but that would be illegal where I am.

u/spicybright 14h ago

It's really easy to test so there's lots of examples posted online. Just have a friend open their DD app and try ordering the same thing as them. I'm in the US, only a few states have laws against this sort of "dynamic pricing", at least to my knowledge.

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 11h ago

We compared both apps side by side.. same address, same store, same delivery window, etc and the price was still different

These are not all of the factors. Does she tend to tip more? Order more often? Have fewer complaints?

For all we know if you drop the pass your price might go up even more. It might be that it's just reducing your fees.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

Why would any of that matter though? Genuinely. It makes no sense that one person would have to pay more than another the same amount of items and the same distance of travel

u/Cosmic_Quasar Dasher (> 5 years) 9h ago

Doordash's profit margins are pretty slim. People who end up costing them money would likely get charged more to compensate.

u/bkcarp00 9h ago

You really ordering a $5 item. That isn't even worth someone's time to pickup and deliver.

u/daijaubu 9h ago

We didn't order it yet, just noticed the price difference 😭 what the heck aren't some of you guys understanding

u/NotActuallyMeta 8h ago

This sub pops up on my feed all the time and it is honestly insane how many people spend $20 for a $4 item because they have no impulse control and are lazy. And most of the time it is fellow dashers/lower income people (including people using food stamps to door dash). Just asinine.

u/Wr3ckless13 15h ago

Order is too small.

u/Antique-Bat-4463 Dasher (> 5 years) 15h ago

Shouldn't matter. The service fee should not be more with dashpass.

u/ryanhntr 15h ago

This shows there’s no reason to pay for dash pass because you’re saving more without it and not being forced to order more than you wanted or needed to. You shouldn’t be paying more or forced to order more when you’re paying a monthly subscription that’s entire intent is to save you money on your orders

u/daijaubu 15h ago

Exactly. Why am I paying monthly when I'm getting nothing out of it 💀

u/Wr3ckless13 10h ago edited 10h ago

Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. It's known that you have to spend a certain amount to get those benefits. I think it's $12 subtotal. It's says it in the first pic. Spend $12 and save. That's just the way it works. Don't hate the messenger. But I understand this is reddit.

Edit: you need to place an order for a certain amount for benefits. BUT why it's cheaper without is weird. Kinda scummy if you ask me. Should be the same if you didn't met the minimum charge.

u/Kooky-Balance9525 14h ago

This is crazy. I’m sticking with Uber One membership

u/TheDemoz 15h ago

why don’t you just click the I button next to the service fee and read the reason?

It’s likely just A/B testing different things on different accounts and not higher just because one doesn’t
have dashpass.

u/theblenderr 15h ago

A/B testing service & delivery prices? Lmfao what?

u/TheDemoz 15h ago

Yes? Do you not know how companies find correct pricing models? You think they just decide one day to change how things are priced without having done A/B tests prior?

u/theblenderr 15h ago

You A/B test on the same tier of buyer, you don’t A/B test on 2 different tier accounts, especially in which you give the MRR customer a higher price. And I struggle to believe the A/B testers at DD haven’t thought to not allow A/B testing in the same household, much less ordering the same items from the same place at the same time to the same house.

u/TheDemoz 15h ago

I never said these two accounts were in the same A/B test. They could be part of two separate A/B tests, once for DashPass accounts, and one for non DashPass accounts, resulting in their service fees being different. Either way, that point is irrelevant. It could even be one test just for one type of account that has resulted in a shift away from the normal fee structure for one of the segments. The point is that fees and service charges and such are always being experimented on and that almost certainly explains the difference.

And I struggle to believe the A/B testers at DD haven’t thought to not allow A/B testing in the same household, much less ordering the same items from the same place at the same time to the same house.

This is only even relevant assuming they're in the same A/B test to begin with, which you already asserted that it shouldn't be done that way to begin with, and I agree they likely aren't doing that. So this point is pretty much moot.
