Anytime I go out and hear a pop station the newest music I hear is stuff from pre 2015. I don’t often hear stuff like Dua lipa on general store radio stations just the same old black eyed peas and party songs from pre 2015. (And of course choosing Texas being the exception)
Anyone else notice this.

Every decade seems to go through its own cultural and musical cycles.

The first half of the 90s was generally darker, with the rise of grunge, R&B and gangsta rap, but the decade gradually became more bubbly and colorful towards the end with teen pop, boy bands, the spice girls, Hanson, Britney spears, and other similar acts.

The 80s followed a similar pattern. Its first few years still carried some of the darker and more subdued elements of the late 1970s and New Wave, but by the latter half of the decade, pop culture had become much more colorful and gaudy, with neon fashion, dance-pop, big hair.

The 60s also underwent a major transformation. The early part of the decade was still super formal and conservative, but by the late 60s, fashion and music had become much more colorful, casual, experimental, and influenced by hippie/psychedelia.

Because of these recurring patterns, I could see the 2020s following a similar trajectory. The early part of the decade was dominated by the pandemic, isolation, bedroom pop, lo-fi music and generally more introspective aesthetics. As we move toward the final years of the decade, I think there could be a shift toward brighter, more energetic and upbeat music and pop culture.

The pendulum might swing back again. If pop culture naturally moves between darker and lighter periods, the latter half of the 2020s could ultimately see the return of a much sunnier and more upbeat cultural atmosphere in contrast to the covid/sad girl music early years of the decade.

I’m specifically talking about 2013–2019 here btw. I definitely think 2010–2012 youtube video quality already feels somewhat dated, but 2013–2019 HD still looks super recent even now. A 2015-16 Youtube Vlog video doesn’t look as drastically different from now. Do you think that stuff will ever start looking noticeably dated, or will it stay looking relatively clear and modern? Like, will the way media from this era ages have more to do with the fashion, cinematography, editing styles, etc. rather than the actual video quality looking old?

The 1970s was very progressive for its time but due to the broken economy and inflation it was followed by the right wing and Republicans of the 1980s who simply campaigned on how big government is the problem and just used the recovery of the 80s as proof their policies work. Despite the Republicans being in office for most of the 70s, Reagan campaigned as someone different and will bring change against "big government".

The 2020s and 2030s will likely follow. As backlash for Trump II, a Democrat will win in 2028. Despite Biden being in office for a large portion of the decade, the Democrat will campaign as someone different and will bring change against the MAGA agenda. Democrats dominate the 2030s and campaign about the lie that Republicans know how to fix the economy and just point how much "better" the economy was compared to "just four short years ago".

The more eventful and bad the politics is, the more historical it is. But the more tame and calm era, the least historical it is

1. 2020s = obviously the most historic decade in US history since the 60s. No one will ever forget Trump and events in the 2020s

2. 2000s = 9/11, recession, War on Terror, Iraq, it will be a popular debate decade

3. 1970s = Watergate, Nixon, oil crisis, end of Vietnam

4. 1980s = most seen as AIDs, end of Cold War, but not as eventful for US history than the 60s and 70s, its a break period and itll be seen as a cultural decade than a historical mostly

5. 2010s = most of the early 2010s will be skipped except for Arab Spring, OBL, and Sandy Hook. It will go straight to the 2016 election

6. 1990s = like the 50s, it'll be largely be forgotten as a historical decade and seen as a nostalgic decade for old people like the 1890s and 1920s were and are not talked often due to how boring they were historically. The 90s will be the most obscure in history books due to how tame it was

That was the only decade that had the issue of stagnant songs still on the charts because it was counting listeners that streamed songs. About year or two ago they finally created a new rule that says any song on the charts after a certain numbers of weeks automatically gets kicked off so it does not "hog" the charts for other artists or new songs, which is good, because after awhile a song can get stale and boring if it is on the charts too long...

But in your opinion how long is too long for a song to stay on the music charts?

In my opinion anything longer that 12-16 weeks becomes too stale and it's on the charts for too long! A nice summer song should only be around in the summer, not linger into the fall or winter season as an example. However some people might think 12-16 weeks is also too long, so I would like your feedback as well.

A song that came out at the end of the previous school year, should not still be on the charts at the start of the next school year.

is this just selection bias or is this a new phenomenon?

specifically, rather than just long run theatrical movie releases being in theaters, a lot of one-off theatrical events are happening for franchises that already have a lot of fans who don't necessarily have to go to the theater but CHOOSE to because they want to engage in fandom culture in person. a lot of these are series premiers/finales rather than movies, and a lot of these are indie productions.

my best guess is that gen Z especially is extremely prone to engaging in fandom culture, which is primarily online. theaters/studios see this and understand they can cash in to fandom culture by showing certain fandom culture media in theaters. it allows people in fandoms to engage in their fandom in person without needing to attend a convention or work hard to make meetups happen. most of these examples ive listed are series, which are much easier to build up good will from fandoms than movies are.

gen z people also "grew up" during covid, with many being teenagers, around the time of their life that they might start engaging with fandom culture more. covid pushed a lot of teenagers onto the internet much more, increasing the chances theyd engage with fandom culture even more. a lot of people have already talked about theaters losing relevance due to covid, so i wonder if theater execs know this and are wanting to "win back" these fandom types to theaters. and on a personal level, as a gen z early-twenties person who was a teen in covid, i dont really go to the theater much anymore for theatrical releases, but i did go see TADC in theaters and am planning to see Jet Lag in theaters as well. if it is an intentional strategy, its working!

In the 2000s and early 2010s, YA novels like The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, and Harry Potter were huge among teenagers. They had massive fandoms, online communities, fan art, theories, shipping, merchandise, adaptations, etc

But ever since the Great Shift (2020), and watching anime became mainstream and socially accepted, a lot of the same people who would have been into YA novels back then seem to have shifted toward manga and anime instead, especially shōnen, which YA books share a demographic with. The anime credited with starting the Great Shift, Attack on Titan, has an almost YA dystopia feel (at least in the early seasons). Also, a lot of anime fanbases have groups of people who would usually be in separate fanbases.

Was it the change from tv and film to internet and streaming? Is there a way to fix this?

I'm a zillennial/late millennial. As a tween in the 2000s, tween media was everywhere at the time. It began in the 80s and 90s but seemingly hit a peak during the New Millennium:

• Disney Channel and Nickelodeon teen pop was predominatly aimed at tweens. Hilary Duff, Aly & AJ, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, the Jonas Brothers, Miranda Cosgrove, etc
• A lot of teen pop was aimed at tweens or "safe" for teens. I remember liking bands and singers like B5, 3LW, Girls Like Boys, The Click 5, The Naked Brothers Band, Chris Brown, Jojo, Jesse McCartney...
• Kidcoms were aimed at tweens. Stuff like Drake & Josh, iCarly, Victorious, That's So Raven, Even Stevens, Lizzie Maguire, etc.
• There were online spaces like Neopets, Millsberry, Cartoon Network's website, Nick's website... also forums aimed at tweens and teens. Didn't Scarleteen have a forum for young girls?
• I don't think the concept of "middle grade" books existed, but the idea was still out there. Books for 10-13 year olds, not quite YA books but not primary school kid'a books.
• Tween fashion, especially for girls, was big business. Claire's existed because of it.

Somewhere around 2013 and 2017, tween culture took a nose-dive. I've seen people say there's no real space for tweens now. Kids switch to teen media prematurely.

The one exceptions seems to be middle grade books. Comics and books aimed at 9-12 year olds are more common than ever. The comic world is much more diverse than it was even a decade ago.

Which option is the closest period you define as the Y2K era? I'm seeing people refer to Y2K as the 90s-2000s transitional period while others refer it to both the entire 90s and 2000s and even 2010s.

How will this decade be remembered by those who lived through it and be described to by those who hadn't?

Will it be a time people will yearn for, or a time remembered for nothing good?
