also what desktop environment do u guys like?

Hi everyone, im thinking to switch from Fedora to Debian (KDE) beacuse of the great stability that Debian offers, but i have some questions about how is it to use it for daily use and gaming. I know that there are lots of posts like this, but if someone has my same experience, how is Debian with NVIDIA Optimus? I have an MSI Katana GF66 12UC (3050 Laptop and an i7-12700H), and, up until now it was ok, but now that i want to change i would like to know how is it from you.

Hello. I am trying to connect my iPod to my computer so I can add and remove music like you do with iTunes. I tried using iOpenPod and my iPod wasn't detected. I checked the instructions and it said to make sure my iPod was 'mounted as a drive'. However, my computer doesn't detect my iPod at all. Nor my iPhone. If I run lsbk -lf, there is no difference when it is connect and when it's not. When I check with lusb, it shows. It shows on dmeg but there an error:

What does this mean? Does this have something to do with why I cannot mount? I tried searching this up, and I only got answers about Arch. I don't know how similar the two distros are but I'd rather not.

My iPod is an iPod touch 4th generation. running iOS 6.1.6. It is jailbroken. My iPhone is an iPhone 13 running iOS 18.6.2. I am running Debian trixe on a Dell Latitude E6430, kernel is "Linux 6.12.107+deb13-amd64".

Hey guys, so after a bunch of drinks with the buddies (yes, I know), I've gotten it into my head to try my hand at game dev.

I've run very long-lived debian boxes (about 10 years old and still surviving!) despite running into various issues or bugs... However, I've only done web dev, cloud/hybrid architecting, and mostly sysadmin stuff as most scripts have withstood the test of time.

Learning game dev feels like a huge leap, but because I've felt deeply disappointed by the gaming industry at large, I no longer want to play games from any company with a long history of issues with basic human integrity and honour. But I do enjoy genres ranging from strategy, RPG, to storytelling, and want to try my hand at making something.

I've enjoyed SimAnt, StarCraft 2 (but custom maps), Escape Velocity, Baldur's Gate 3, Warframe, Doom, Stardew Valley, Hades.

What is a stable FOSS setup for Trixie that I could mess around with?

Hello, I have installed debian 14 testing with kde as my desktop environment. I have tried to setup fingerprint authentication and it works when I run sudo and when I lunch certain apps that require authentication. One thing that doesn't work is to unlock the device when it comes from a sleep state. I do get the prompt to use my fingerprint, but when I touch the sensor it doesn't do anything. It doesn't say that it failed or succeeded or anything, it just stays like that and only unlocks when I type in my password.
I came from a fedora 44 install and I had no issues there. Everything worked out of the box. Previous versions of fedora (43) also worked, so I don't know how to fix it. I have tried some solutions on the internet, but none worked.

Apologies for the vague title, but there really isn't a singular consistent symptom to list.

As stated, I'm running a Nvidia RTX 3060, and I'm having an issue where certain elements are flickering when using the GPU in specific hardware-accelerated programs. This is not a problem with the GPU, as I only just recently (~2-3 days ago) switched from Arch using KDE on Wayland, which did not have this problem. And, before Arch, I used Linux Mint Cinnamon, which also did not have this problem.

The GPU also doesn't have any other rendering artifacts; the actual image is being rendered perfectly, it's just that different programs seem to behave in different, though consistent ways.

Specifically:

• Flatpaks seem to render perfectly fine, with no stuttering or flickering, though vsync seems enabled permanently. As an example, Furmark is locked at 60 FPS when I could easily get higher framerates on other distros. I'm not sure if that is a limitation of Flatpak on Debian or if it is another GPU issue.
• .debs and programs installed using apt exhibit flickering of hardware-rendered objects. Disabling hardware acceleration stops the issue entirely.
• Games played through Wine and Proton seem to stutter, especially when vsync is enabled, but they are otherwise visually perfect.

For convenience, here are my current specs:

• Debian 13 Trixie
• Kernel 6.12.107
• KDE Plasma 6.3.6 (Wayland)
• NVIDIA RTX 3060
• AMD Ryzen 5 5500 12-core @ 4.2 GHz
• 32 GB RAM
• 512 GB NVME

I did install a Nvidia driver following this guide, as the official Nvidia guides simply refused to work. That said, it's most likely that the guide not working is a result of my incompetence rather than the guide being faulty lol.

If it matters, I did install Debian using a DVD. Given that this is more or less a fresh install, I am completely willing to reinstall Debian if it comes to that.

Basically, to fix a "bug" it has been decided to disable the option to change the background image of sddm.

Is this just a temp fix for trixie or this feature will be permanently disabled?

Is there some other way to change the background image?

6 months into Debian and 1 year into Linux, my laptop went from my least used device to most used device. I never thought I would enjoy using this laptop again after how slow and laggy it was on Windows. I made it my own. It's amazing what open source community can do. I don't know if it is Linux or Debian, how the hell is this thing so stable?

I had a machine that was still running 6.12.86 kernel and Firefox 152 lost all of its configuration even the icon on XFCE. Since the latest kernels have been upgraded frequently to 6.12.107, is there any known issues that may be related to thiis issue ?

I'm using Debian 12 with Xfce 4.18 and Thunar as my file manager.

I want to remove or hide the "Trash" shortcut from the LEFT SIDEBAR in Thunar (under "Places"), but I want to KEEP the Trash icon on the Desktop.

What I've already tried: - Thunar Preferences → Side Pane → no option to hide Trash. - xfconf-query -c thunar -p /misc-show-trash -s false → no such property. - Edited ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/thunar.xml → no entry for Trash. - Right-click on Trash in sidebar → no "Remove" option.

Other shortcuts like "Desktop" can be removed easily via right-click → "Remove", but Trash doesn't have that option.

I want to keep the Trash icon on the Desktop for easy access, just hide it from the sidebar in Thunar.

Is there any config file, command, or hidden setting to remove it from the sidebar only?

System: - Debian 12 (Bookworm) - Xfce 4.18 - Thunar 4.18

Is anyone here having trouble using icon packs on Wayland? Specifically on KDE: when using Chromium or Discord, the icon from my pack (YAMIS) appears correctly on the panel, Whisker Menu, and elsewhere, but when using Alt+Tab, the app's default icon shows up instead (the blue one for Chromium). It’s not a fallback icon issue; I’ve already tried tweaking the config in nano. With other apps like Spotify and Firefox, the icons stay correct and can even be customized (e.g., I can change the Firefox logo to 'firefox-alt' and it persists in both Alt+Tab and the panel), yet this error occurs with certain apps. I know this is a super specific issue, but I’d appreciate any thoughts or ideas on what might be causing it or how to fix it.

I just got into using CWM and really like it, but would prefer to do some fine tuning beyond the default from the repos, and yet not step outside Debian version, as in to install from outside of the repos.

The problem is that no matter where I locate .cwmrc, it doesn't get read on start-up, despite edits of cwm.desktop in xsessions.

I'm really liking CWM, even in the default state (it's the fastest WM that I've tried so far), but would really like to be able to tweak it to suit me, but don't know why it's not loading my .cwmrc on start-up.

I've managed to run my own configs to run on a number of WMs, but getting my customized config to run with CWM is eluding me.

Any CWM user's advice on this would be appreciated.

As some may or may not be aware from friends who happen to make use of proprietary platforms such as Discord, age verification and "protecting the children" is all the rage these days. Just one small problem: where is your ID being sent to?

Back earlier this year, Discord announced a policy of adopting global age verification methods. If you are under the age of 16 or Discord does not have adequate information needed to verify your age, you will be locked out of certain features & be age-gated from joining specific servers. These policies resulted in enough outrage that alternatives to Discord like Stoat & Fluxer have made the waves, and Discord itself decided to kick the can towards the second-half. We are now in the second half, and Discord has suddenly brought age verification back up as a "Discord Preview", meaning these policy changes are about to start. As someone who is highly involved in the primary Debian space & wider Linux space on Discord, these recent events are worrying and have been since February. What are we to do now?

Some of you might be aware that there is an active relationship between said widely-used community Discord and this subreddit. We are not abandoning or deleting that anytime soon, but we will be pushing users on Reddit to start using Fluxer as our primary community chat space going forward for several reasons while Discord is maintained as an easily accessible "necessary evil" for the purposes of education regarding Debian:

• Fluxer is free and open source, almost completely compatible with Discord API, and can do many of the things Discord can do. APKs exist for Android over on their GitHub, and there is a public beta test for iOS users right now.
• The Debian Community Fluxer is 100% bridged with the Discord, meaning you are not walking into an empty space and can communicate with people on the Discord instance. Both are actually run by the same people including myself, u/wizard10000, and a few others.
• Many will ask why we don't just link to Debian IRC or Matrix instances instead and the answer is simple; we should be embracing any and all efforts to help promote & foster high quality, educational spaces for Debian as a means to an end. Many younger individuals in particular are learning about Linux on arenas such as Discord versus traditional platforms.

The long-term goal is to create an independent, community-run space under a FOSS platform that can exist without depending on the Discord instance, but still be accessible to the masses using nothing but a browser or a phone to participate in. Today, we are beginning work towards that mission, and we hope to see you participating over on https://fluxer.gg/debian soon!
