This sub now feels like it's approaching the end
Since Fable 5.1 and GPT 6, I think the complete downward spiral has begun. Perhaps there's just been a collective realisation that the job has changed forever and many of us are about to lose ours.
Let's just be grateful for what we had. A toast to you all. Goodnight and good luck with whatever comes our way in the next 6 months.
Witnessing the end of something which had such a history is quite the feeling. Now the void calls for this profession, go and do what you've been planning but always put off! Write that book! Make that switch!

Frontier model bubble is gonna pop way faster than we expect I think.
So many better options that are basically free, run it locally on your own servers and probably better for programming as it would require more engagement and participation from the engineers to get it where it should be

It's not actually that trivial. Have you ever made your own agent from scratch using Langgraph or made a custom RAG pipeline? You could be learning that for 6 months. Although I agree AI is getting much better at it.

6.5YOE I’ve been unemployed for 9 months. 3 years ago I was unemployed for 9 months till beginning of 2024. I’ve tried during both times to explore other fields. This time I’m serious and have primarily been exploring adjacent and different types of work. Mainly entry level finance or sales.
I still can’t get a job. I’ve made it to last round for probably 20 places across different types of work. And either get cut in tech bc they found a better fit in the chaotic landscape. (Even after companies told me they’ve been looking for 5 months and I was the first to make it that far) Or I get cut in entry level non tech bc I don’t have the right experience. Despite them 1. Mentioning they want someone technical that they can teach their ways. And 2. They still haven’t found anyone better after a month.
Recent company literally called me back a month later after I saw them constantly reposting their job listing. I thought “yup i figured they wouldn’t find anyone with the desired technical skill and interest in what they do, willing to take that pay.” And sure enough they told me they’ve haven’t found who they want. But not to tell me I’ve got the role… they asked if I’d be interested in doing a contract project for them to build that team a tool.
This shit sucks lmao.

Have to understand that most of us stopped writing code by hand in November of 2025. That was high level stuff like Java/Python/JavaScript/SQL/etc. Now we are seeing the latest models write pure assembly, Rust, C, C++, better and faster than a human can do. There was another post about Fable getting a Windows 3D game to run on Mac OS by decompiling it, translating the low-level graphics libraries, and recompiling. Yet another post about Fable writing its own Windows kernel in 38 minutes.
What's the point of learning C/C++/Rust when these are compiled down to assembly, and the LLM can write pure assembly better than the compiler?

Because you still need "big picture thinking" and to understand dependencies/requirements. AIs have no agency at the moment
Also the context window explodes and they start messing shit up after a while the longer you run them, not to mention token cost
Markdown files is not comparable to long term memory and continous learning. Only humans can do that

I think you guys are forgetting faking it until you make it, identify what your customers now want - look at job boards for roles that pay the most (that means theres a high demand but not the supply) and become that! you dont flush an entire career down the drain when some new tech comes out
dont be in tech if you dont want to ride the waves of constant development (which you helped feed)

Why do you think non technical people will be doing this? It will still be us, just like we switched to Java, we will switch to Claude as the primary tool. We have huge advantage over non technical people when it comes to working on software.
