Amazing. Stunning. What a treat!!

I woke up to this a few days ago. I have several magpies in my garden who intermingle with rooks, sparrows and fat wood pigeons (They're huge!!). They generally get on well together without any serious conflict, but there's a constant melodrama between them all that I find fascinating/entertaining. I've named all the regular magpies who all have distinct personalities but I coldnt figure out which one was nearly in my bedroom.

What i found fascinating is how complex the run of the mill calls they make become when you hear them up close. A small "bark" up close has complected higher frequency whistles and low end chuntering that I never noticed when I listen to them further away.

everyone should get a couple of bird feeders and a bird bath. it really is like having a soap opera in your back garden. the bird bath made a massive difference.

Get a dog too. My dog and the birds live in harmony (they're not interested in each other), but i don't get cats in my garden because of the dog. Its quite humbling that every so often we get a magpie or rook that is injured or out of sorts and chooses our garden to recuperate. I'm sure the main reason for this is we tend not to get cats in our garden and food and a bath is readily available.

I have had cats all my life and most have been just fine with corvids in the yard. My present cat goes even further. He has a pact with the birds. He brings them the mice he catches and they give aerial protection to his territory. When both cat and crow are in the yard at the same time, they talk to eachother and there is no hostility at all.
