Simpsons seasons 3-7 remain to this day some of the funniest TV ever written.  I go back and watch it all the time and lately I’ve really noticed the Conan humor (and miss it before and after)

Somehow, Matt Groening looks like Homer Simpson here. The way he sits, the shape of his head, that beard thing. I feel like I can see his hands doing that thumb twiddling thing Homer does.

It really is and he gets it - the improbability of Lorne being put in charge of finding Letterman's replacement and recommending an unknown SNL writer who burned out and became a writer for an animated series is astounding.

And then if you think of Conan running around unemployed or barely employed with his writing partner, sharing an apartment and a car, who turns out to be Greg Daniels.

As a kid, I remember watching The Tracey Ullman Show to catch The Simpsons shorts! I loved (and still love) Tracey, but The Simpsons put the show over the top for me!

Same - everybody I knew watched (or recorded on VHS) The Tracey Ullman Show JUST to see the Simpsons (sometimes skipping the rest). When Conan asked him when he knew he had a hit, I expected him to say just that - that people cared more about the cartoon than the sketches on the show.

I have always just assume it was pure burn out. Conan is an overworker fuelled by parental expectations and Catholic guilt. Pair that with some kind of neurospiciness that makes him prone to depression at a workplace famous for putting people through the ringer and it's a recipe for disaster.

It is kinda crazy how Conan's footprint on The Simpsons is basically a "blip" now given the history/scope of the show.

But his humor was so influential for the writers moving forward, to the fans, and Conan himself. I don't think Conan realize just how massive those 2-3 years of the show changed American comedy forever.

(I know that last sentence might be a bit hyperbolic...but damn it, I believe it to be true!)

Everyone should watch this. It's from an old show Conan used to do "Serious Jibber-Jabber" where he had a bit of a Simpson's writers reunion and they all talk about how it was. I listen to it every year or so. It's hilarious and interesting. Incredibly funny guys.
