I feel like I’ve been at stage 5 since 2016 or so. Covid certainly didn’t help, nor two Trump presidencies. I wonder how many more people are collapse aware now. I don’t think that people should operate in the delusion that things will someday improve, but I’ve come to find that people make life choices independently of reality, whether they are aware of reality or not.

I got to stage 5 at roughly the same time as you, in 2013. At the time, people thought I was completely out of my mind when I tried to talk about how screwed we were. In my experience, more people are realizing that now, at least to some degree. (Although plenty are still in some pretty deep denial). It's still weird to see people who have much of this knowledge, though, make decisions that don't align with the extremely grave implications. Having kids is the biggest one that stands out to me. When collapse-aware folks decide to reproduce, I just can't wrap my head around it.

I've been at 5 for some years, not exactly sure. I view it like a diagnosis, not jettisoning planning but enjoying every day knowing they are finite (which they always were but most people live as if that's not the case, undervaluing their time and health for the promise of future success/wealth). In a way, this knowledge (along with a health issue) allow me to prioritize what I always care about more but had postponed for the sake of security / career. Now I try to seek wonder and understanding.

It always has been the case.

Or the Holocaust in Palestine. During Biden's murderous rampage (100kt of bombs provided to the genocide, hundreds of planes, dozens of boats, chock full of 2000 pounds bombs), the corpses of children were strewn up on building's rebar like Christmas ornaments. Biden and his administration are still free to this day. No one has even been arrested.

Submission: This was posted 10 years ago and I thought it could be good to repost it to help us prepare for the next 10 years. It details the stages of acceptance related to collapse and intratable problems related to human nature. It also discusses paths to cope.

I think at level 5, choosing an amalgam of the outer and inner paths is possible, that it's not a bifurcation. My partner and I are permaculture folks and are committed to building community resilience. We're trying to get a transition street like thing happening. We grow more food than we need intentionally. But we also meditate, practice spiritual modalities and seek to develop our consciousness. We know that civilisation will collapse and what is happening to our world ,(I'm a former climate scientist) but doing both of these things at once gives us purpose and meaning.

It's great to hear when people use their awareness for local resilience. Can I ask, were you and your partner both collapse aware or did you arrive at awareness at different speeds? How did you decide on what efforts you wanted to pursue?

I think my partner was born collapse aware. For me it was a slower dawning gradually deepening over time - it's really only the last 5 years I've truly grokked our trajectory. In terms of what we're doing re the outer path, it's my partner who's been the inspiration all the way through but I'm all the way on board now. I've been the inspiration for the inner path work we do. I'm starting out as a therapist, with part of what I do being supporting people as they grapple with collapse and transition to a new process of living.

Same! Its a real downer of a subject to be fair. I tend to keep it to myself but it can be a bit lonely.

The future is still unknowable. Solutions become more elusive by the year and it ssems collapse is no longer decades away but years. Maybe we walk right up to the abyss, stare in and somehow back slowly away. Yeah, I know it’s basically magical thinking, but rolling over and surrendering to doom is not any plan.

i love me my leftists that think the 1% and some ominous corporations with their co2 release machines are the problem and everyone else can just go on as always, also lab meat, brah.

I like this quite a lot, and would add a sixth level: optimistic nihilism and a long view.
I work in sustainability with a focus on ecological change and evolution. The wise leaders in my field have dealt with their anxieties by decentering the human experience and recognizing that the biosphere has experienced catastrophe repeatedly and still stabilized. You do what you can to reduce the suffering, but the world is bigger than us all.
It is not your duty to fix the world, but neither are you free to desist from it.

"For those who arrive at Stage 5 there is a real risk that depression will set in."
Nah. All you need to do is to accept, make peace and live as if the world is not going to end, until it does.

5+: Awareness of all the above and also other taboo topics that even this mighty sub is scared of: UFOs, the afterlife, the paranormal, mysticism, etc
Even this sub has lines it can't or won't cross. Collapse, religion, science, philosophy are easy. Mysticism is hard.
