NO Kings is urging people to create non-partisan get out the vote events for October 17th. I'd love to do something here. I thought about maybe organizing rides for UNC students who want to go to early voting sites but don't have cars. However, I have no experience doing anything like that and I'm hoping that we'd have many more students than I could handle on my own.

Would anybody want to do that with me? Any better ideas for an event?

I need to get a better dash cam. This truck rolled through a red light at probably 45-50MPH as if it wasn't even there. Can you imagine if it had t boned a passenger car? I want to contact the business. This was terrible and considering how long the light was green could have ended in a tragedy that. I know nobody likes red light cameras but this is why they exist in some places

Hey guys, I’m a freshman at UNC and I live by myself, so I do DoorDash in between classes to help pay for my expenses.
A few weeks ago, I parked at the McDonald’s parking lot because I had to pick up an order from a restaurant literally right across the street. I was gone for less than two minutes, and when I came back, my car was already about to get towed by Barnes Towing.

I get that it’s private property and technically I wasn’t supposed to park there, but I honestly didn’t think they would tow me that fast. My car was still on, the windows were down, and I had my hazards on. I was literally right across the street grabbing food for a DoorDash order.

The guy charged me $300 for the drop off fee, which I obviously didn’t have. I had like $20 on me, so I had to call my stepmom and borrow the money just to get my car back. I understand that it’s their job and that I was technically parked where I shouldn’t have been, but $300 for something that happened in less than two minutes just felt crazy to me, especially as a college student who’s literally just trying to make some money between classes.
And then, to make the day even worse, that same night a drunk driver ran a red light and completely totaled my car. So yeah… probably one of the worst days I’ve had in a while lol. I’m not trying to say I was completely in the right for parking there, but I’m curious if anyone else has had a similar experience with Barnes Towing

They came last week and repaired the pot holes on Legion rd. I believe the road was better before the repairs. It’s so rough now. Any one else notice?

Heard the terrible news about Dr. Konrad Jarausch's death in Chapel Hill at Eastwood Lake. He greatly impacted my time at Carolina and further academic career. Any other alumni in their feels here? In any case, rest in peace Dr. Jarausch; thinking of his family, students, and all others close to him!

I am a Chapel Hill local and have lived here my entire life. I did my undergraduate degree at NC State and am now continuing my education at UNC. I also walk down Franklin Street all the time, so none of this is new to me.
Over the past few months, I have seen more posts about unhoused people being aggressive, panhandling more, and even assaulting people.

I think the rise in aggression is a sign of something much bigger. It is a sign that these people and their needs are not being addressed. They are being pushed to the side until they feel like they have to become louder and more visible just to be noticed. That does not justify assaulting someone, but it helps explain why the situation may be getting worse.

UNC is a school associated with privilege. Obviously, not every student is rich, but many students have financial aid, help from their parents, or other resources that make it possible for them to live here. The unhoused population sees this. They see students moving into expensive apartments while local people are being priced out and pushed farther to the side. At least here in Chapel Hill, there are some resources available to help meet basic needs like shelter and food.

On the topic of shelters, I am honestly unsure how safe or effective the local ones are at helping the unhoused population. Whenever this topic comes up, people mention that Chapel Hill has a shelter, but I rarely see anyone discuss its effectiveness, accessibility, safety, capacity, or what happens to people after they leave. Simply having a shelter does not necessarily mean everyone can access it or that it is enough to address the larger problem.

Then I keep hearing people say, “They need to go somewhere.” But where are they supposed to go? They cannot just get into a car and move somewhere else. Many of them do not have transportation, money, family support, or another community waiting to take them. No one is going to come pick them up and bring them somewhere better.

Chapel Hill can do something, but I do not have much confidence that it will. These people were already forgotten about in the first place. It feels like the town only cares now because the problem has become more visible and is starting to affect students, businesses, and wealthier residents.

At the same time, Chapel Hill keeps building expensive housing that seems meant for students who can afford it through financial aid, family support, or both. We keep building housing that many local and working-class people cannot afford, and then we act surprised when more people are left without anywhere to live.

I do not think the answer is ignoring assaults or pretending aggressive behavior is okay. I also do not think the answer is pushing unhoused people somewhere else so that we no longer have to see them.

I am bringing this up because I see room for a real discussion about both public safety and why the situation is getting worse. I do not have an exact solution, but discussion could help find one.
