As anyone studied Catalan using either the free A1 materials on the cpnl.cat website (https://www.cpnl.cat/cursos-de-catala/materials-aprenentatge/a1/) and/or the free course Parla.cat (https://parla.cat/login/home.php?id=0&lang=en)?

Which one did you prefer and why? I would prefer focusing on one program only first, but I might end up using both if needed... On CPNL, this is a PDF to download with activities and there are also audios. It seems it's supposed to be done with a teacher but I feel I can follow along by myself. On Parla.cat, it looks more like an online integrated program.

I could read in previous posts that CPNL offers a free course for beginners but I could not find any free 100% online course in their course finder. Has it been replaced with the PDF?

No se a vosaltres, però tot i que a "settings" tenia la configuració de contingut en els idiomes "català" i "english", em sortia un munt de contingut en espanyol.

Si voleu no veure contingut en espanyol al vostre feed (perquè voleu practicar català, o simplement per preferència), jo ho he configurat de la manera següent (desde la web, a l'app deu ser similar):

1. Configuració / Settings
2. Account -> Location customization: us recomano posar "no location specified". Si poseu Spain o ubicació basada en IP us apareixerà contingut en espanyol. El preu d'això és que si us interessen noticies o contingut geogràficament rellevant serà més dificil que el veieu.
3. Preferences -> Display language: Com que no hi ha Català, ho poso en English.
4. Preferences -> Content languages: jo ho tinc en Català i English. Aquesta secció per si sola no evitarà que et surti molt contingut en espanyol (per més que no marquis espanyol en aquesta llista), si a location customization tens IP o espanya.

Us comparteixo aquest vídeo que aborda un dubte força comú: com es diu correctament en català, "un anàlisis", "un anàlisi" o "una anàlisi"? Si alguna vegada us ho heu preguntat mentre escrivíeu o parlàveu, el vídeo ho explica de manera clara i planera.

A més, a la descripció hi ha enllaços a recursos i exercicis gratuïts de nivell C1 i C2, i també a una llista de barbarismes, per si voleu aprofundir.

In english It makes me read it. "Today, I'm leaving the Barcelona." why would I need to add 'de' for this situation?

Hola 👋 I’m currently in Barcelona right now, but I’m spending 2 weeks in Catalonia, I speak very basic Catalan but I want to learn this language.

I love this country, I have been here to visit twice now and the people and the culture have captivated me. I want to communicate better with the wonderful people who live here, and I feel like I’m disrespecting this beautiful part of the world by not being able to talk to the wonderful people here, what’s the best way to learn Catalan for an English speaker?

I did see that Glossika have a free course supported by the Catalan government, but is there a better way?

Hi everyone! i'm from switzerland and when i was a kid my family would go on vacation in a a town near tarragona. i used to be friends with a local group of kids back then (we were around 13) and i asked them when they spoke spanish and when catalan. they said that they had to speak catalan in school but with friends and family they'd always speak spanish.

i'm guessing it's not like that for everyone (i once asked for directions in spanish in barcelona and the woman cussed me out and told me to speak catalan here).

so i was wondering how it is in "general", when and where do people in catalunya speak spanish and when do they speak catalan. Does it depend on the social circle or where you live, maybe it really differs from town to town? or how do you (if you're from there) do it, what is your "relationship" with each language? what do you consider your "main" language

Hola a todos, me llamo Adam. Y estoy súper confundido sobre cómo presentarme en catalán, aunque parezca que sea algo súper de nivel básico. ¿Debería decir “Sóc el Adam”, “Sóc l’Adam”, “Sóc en Adam” o “Sóc n’Adam”? Hasta ahora, he estado usando únicamente la estructura “Em dic Adam” precisamente para evitar este problema, lol. 

I really want to sing Chopin, tal vegada a valldemosa which is a Salvador Espiru poem set to music by Antón García Abril. I am a UK english speaker, I can sing in Spanish quite well but Catalan is unknown to me.

There aren't masses of recordings but one I've found is María Orán. I would like to check some of the pronunciations around the ends of words ending in e, that she pronounces with an 'a' sound like the end of the spanish 'dia'. For example 'ombres de boires' sounds to me like 'ombras de boiras' and the ends of words ending in 'n' are not pronounced.

I like to be as accurate as possible. Below is the poem and attached is is a link to the youtube of María Orán. I would be really grateful if someone could tell me if it is accurate pronunciation.

I’ve been trying to learn Catalan and kept running into the same problem: there are some genuinely good resources out there, but a lot of the online learning experience feels either dated, fragmented, or designed around Spanish rather than English.

So I ended up building my own.

It’s a free, open-source web app for learning Catalan from English:

- Barcelona/Central Catalan
- A 5,000-word frequency-based vocabulary curriculum
- Contextual flashcards with audio

- A story that gradually gets more difficult as you progress
- No account, no paywall, no ads

It’s very much a work in progress, and I’m not claiming it’s better than the resources people here already use. I built it because I wanted something like this myself.

I’d genuinely love some feedback from people who actually speak or are learning Catalan.

Especially:
- Area there mistakes or unnatural Catalan?
- Does the progression make sense?
- Is anything confusing or unnecessarily complicated?
- What would you add?
- And, most importantly, would you actually use something like this?
