Preferably the console versions though, you lose tac-cam but gain that same KOTOR feel of third person running around queuing up actions with a fun unique interface.

Neverwinter Nights 1/2 are essentially the same engine and game system and much closer to the KOTOR experience.

I suppose that’s true, though the NWN games have a lot more build complexity than KOTOR. The level of build complexity in Dragon Age is more similar to KOTOR, and the companion interactions are more like KOTOR too.

NWN 1 and 2 also have considerably more jank than KOTOR, though I suppose DA:O can be pretty janky too. The jank is all a part of the experience in all those games though.

So while the engine of NWN is more similar, I’d argue that the experience of DA:O is closer.

I'd personally also much rather play through, say, NWN2 rather than Dragon Age, but that's a matter of taste. I'm just saying that KOTOR runs on a modified version of the D&D 3.5 d20 system that is the same thing that the NWN games run on and the engines are also almost exactly the same, with KOTOR being aimed a little more at consoles. KOTOR (especially 2) is also loaded with its own amount of jank, so I can't imagine anyone going from that to NWN would feel particularly out of sorts. You're definitely right in terms of build complexity, though.

I’ve played through DA:O maybe twice and I’ve played through NWN1 4 times and NWN2 maybe 6 or 7 times, so clearly I agree with you. I was just trying to think of what feels like a closer spiritual successor.

You’re definitely right about the 3.5 system of course.

Ah really? It is definitely a must play for BioWare fans but I put many other games above it like Kotor, dragon age origins, mass effect series, baldurs gate series and planescape torment.

it's unique but it's not good. it has a few interesting characters but the story itself is hackneyed, a few characters are straight up problematic, the combat system is underdeveloped, there's no real notable difference between open hand/closed fist, the minigames are pointless, and the ending is underbaked. best left to completionists and those who have enough nostalgia to pull them through it. It's too bad because it had the potential to be something great--I'd love a legit wu xia CRPG--but Bioware was in a real weird space at the time

This - not to mention it predates ME1. I have the special edition with the shaolin monk. I wish that disc was recognizable on current consoles. I don’t even remember if 360 recognized it

Fallen Order is a vastly different game in style, but it is a quality game, yes. Expect a lot less strategy and a lot more action-oriented gameplay.

Extremely different genre, but my personal pick for underrated Star Wars game is Empire at War.

The gameplay is different, but if you’re looking for a quality star wars story with the same level artistic depth and memorable characters as kotor 2, fallen order is the answer.

Nope. Unless you're down for an entirely different genre. Story wise it does a good amount of worldbuilding that adds a lot of information to the Post Clone-Wars timeline and some additions to pre New Hope. Its best contribution imo is how it ties many of the media in that timeline really well. Rebels, Rogue One, Heck even post this game too in Obi Wan and there's a comic book series that deals with Darth Vader Post Clone Wars too which features. However, it's not really an RPG, it's a souls lite. There is a progression system that is action rpg lite esque but I'm not sure if being able to accrue and cap the whole thing would necessarily make it as such. Overall great game and super tightly packed in gameplay imo. Can't say anything abt the sequel, haven't played it, but apparently it's good too.

If you want to keep going down the kotor path, give swtor (the kotor mmo) a try. There is a bit of a learning curve if it your first time with an mmo but the story is pretty decent and even ties back to kotor in the expansions.

If you want to keep going with the bioware style rpg, try the dragon age games or mass effect. Jade empire was amazing although I'm not sure how it holds up today.

The fallen order games are great but they play more like a souls game with challenging combat with less rpg elements. They are also kinda hungry when it comes to processing power if your system is older and assuming you are on pc.

You have a few options:

Star Wars The Old Republic (the MMO): this follows up on the story from the KOTOR games. Some people like it and some people really dislike it and prefer to ignore it.
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order: This is another very good Star Wars game, but it is not much of an RPG (although it does have a skill tree system). It’s an action adventure game with some soulslike and metroidvania elements. It takes place between Episodes 3 and 4 and it stars a former Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66.
Mass Effect: Mass Effect is kind of the successor to KOTOR in terms of being sci-fi Bioware RPGs. Although it’s less Star Wars and more like Star Trek. If you want to get into that series then get the Legendary Edition.

You're in for a big big treat.

The same folks made Dragon Age and Mass Effect which both fell similar dialogue heavy games with choices that affects everything, this is the same in Dragon Age and Mass Effect. The reason why people love old BioWare is because of these and other games.

Start with Dragon Age Origins, once you finish that you can "export" your character to its standalone huge DLC called "The Awakening" which you continue your character from that and it remembers all the choices you've made so you'll love the references to your past and such.

Once you finish Dragon Age Origins which you'll no doubt be hooked it's so good, then you'll have Dragon Age 2 which again you can then export the character from Awakening. My English isn't perfect my word with export and import gets confusing but you know what I mean.

There's also Mass Effect trilogy so you're on for a big treat.

No, you should play Star Wars: The Old Republic. That's the best continuation of the story of KotOR. Fallen Order is good, but won't scratch the same itch as the KotOR games did.
