Talib Husan, "Husan the Pupil", in the Sylhet Nagari script. Being written by Ghulam Husan in 1549 CE, Talib Husan is potentially the oldest surviving piece of Sylhet Nagari literature, although the puthi Bhedshar may or may not be older, thought to have been written on an unspecified date in the 16th century CE. This puthi provides the manner in which Sufi literature was introduced to the Silchar region of Assam. Of course, the manuscript in the post is a much more recent reprinting of the story, being handwritten in the 19th century CE. ancient and poetic language is used in this puthi , originally being from the Middle Bengali period.

Script An ancient relative of old Persian... written in the Devanagari script?

SOURCE: Omniglot, Google

Avestan, a relative of old Persian, a language that grew and thrived in the sands of Iran... has been written in the Devanagari script for centuries.

Avestan is the holy language of the Zoroastrianins (Parsis), there holy texts the Avesta and Gathas are written in it. As Parsis have been living in India for multiple centuries they started writing Avestan in the Devanagari script, as well as in the Gujarati script too, to some extent. In fact, there has been a long tradition of Zoroastrian priests who were also Sanskrit scholars and translated avestan works and Zoroastrian holy texts into Sanskrit. It started with Neryosang Dhaval (11th-14th century, there is some debate amongst historians), who translated vital holy texts and preserved critical theological works. His scholarly contributions are so impressive that they are celebrated by Parsis in the form of Sanjan day.

As for the script itself, Avestan fricatives were mapped onto Indic aspirants. (nuqtas weren't actually used, no idea why omniglot included them).

Vowels were a different story, Avestan has quite an expansive vowel inventory, similar but quite different from Sanskrit's. Many Devanagari symbols were repurposed and even some new ones were created for the vowels.

The most interesting symbols have to be the unique Avestan เฅน,โ€Œ making the /ส’/ sound, and the Devanagari aao, เคพเฅ‹ (I only know how to make the diacritic), making the /ษ‘/ sound.

Question Which phrase in ur language make sense in ur language but doesn't in other language when it is translated directly

Upvotes

In my native language Tulu we use เดฌเดพเดธเต† เด‡เดœเตเดœเดฟ/เฒฌเฒพเฒธเณ† เฒ‡เฒœเณเฒœเฒฟ which means "not having sense" or used when someone does mischievous behaviour

But if we translate it literarily it means "no language"

Resource Lipikฤla โ€” type a name or message and see it re-set in real historic Brahmi, Grantha, ลšฤradฤ and more

Upvotes

Lipikฤla re-sets a name or short message letter-by-letter in a historic Indian script โ€” Brahmi, Grantha, Siddhaแนƒ, ลšฤradฤ, Bhaiksuki, or Nandinagari โ€” the way it might have looked cut in stone, on a copper plate, or on a palm leaf. You can type in roman letters or directly in 8 modern scripts (Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Sanskrit/Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia).

Link: https://yourownaiguru-jpg.github.io/personal-tools/lipikala/

A few things worth knowing before you try it:

  • It's real Unicode code points for that script's own block, not a font trick over Devanagari โ€” copy the output and it stays that script elsewhere.
  • Every era is labeled authentic (its script has a Unicode encoding) or approximation (it doesn't yet โ€” Vatteluttu, the Kadamba hand โ€” so the nearest living descendant stands in, always disclosed in the caption).
  • Tamil-Brahmi was just fixed to use the dedicated Old Tamil puแธทแธทi and short-e/short-o characters Unicode encodes for that orthography, instead of collapsing them into the generic Brahmi virama and long vowels.

Curious what this sub thinks: which script should get added next? I've seen posts here on Ahom, Kamrupi/Assamese, and Syloti Nagri โ€” a few, like Ahom and Meitei Mayek, already have real Unicode blocks, so they're realistic candidates if there's interest. What would you want to see your own name in?

(If you enjoy small tools like this, I post more of them on X: https://x.com/OwnAIGuru)

Language & Literacy: Does Every Indian Language Have Something to Read?

Upvotes

๐Ÿ“š A language is not truly empowered just because people can speak it. They must also have the opportunity to read, write and keep creating in it.

Today, 8 September โ€” International Literacy Day, is a good moment to think about the connection between language and literacy in India.

Vygotsky saw language and cultural tools as central to how we learn and think. Cummins' Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis suggests that literacy skills developed in one language can support learning in another.

But there is a practical question behind both ideas:

What happens when a language has speakersโ€”but too few books, children's stories, libraries, educational resources or digital spaces?

Literacy needs a living linguistic ecosystem.

UNESCO's 2026 themeโ€”โ€œLiteracy for people, the planet and prosperityโ€โ€”cannot be separated from linguistic diversity. People need literacy in languages that carry their knowledge, culture and everyday lives.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“– This International Literacy Day, let's not only ask: How many people can read?

Let's also ask: Which languages are they able to keep reading, writing and creating in?

Happy International Literacy Day! ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

Notes: As Ahom doesn't have separate letters for the sounds 'ya' and 'ja', the same letter is used here for both sounds. The same applies for the sounds 'ba' and 'ya'. Ahom also doesn't contain any letter for the sound 'sha', so the letter for the sound 'sa' is used here

(Picture is the Syloti-Nagri script from omniglot)

Sylheti is a language closely related to Bengali, and most Sylheti speakers are bilingual in Sylheti and Bengali. It is also related to Assamese. Sylheti is spoken mainly in the Sylhet division of Bangladesh.

The Syloti Nagri script is related to the Kaithi script of Bihar but its exact origins are unknown and the earliest surviving manuscripts are either from 1549 or 1774. The traditional story behind how the script came to be is in the beginning of the 14th century, it was developed by Saint Shahjalal and his 360 saintly companions. Other scripts were used too but were deemed as not suitable for Sylheti.

Thats all for today, bye now :P
