Meta 🛠️ Coming Soon: The Kiez Creator Monthly – Starting March 1st!

Upvotes

Tl;dr: Neues Format ab 1. März: Jeden 1. des Monats 24h lang eigene Berlin-Projekte vorstellen. Sagt uns jetzt, was ihr davon haltet! / New format starting March 1st: Every 1st of the month, share your Berlin projects for 24h. Let us know your feedback now!

Hallo r/berlin ,

Feedback: Was haltet ihr davon?

************************************

Hey r/berlin ,

We’ve heard you: Many of you are building great things for this city, but our rules against self-promotion often leave no room to show them off. We’re changing that.

Starting March 1st, we are introducing The Kiez Creator Monthly.

The Concept: On the 1st of every month, we will open the subreddit for exactly 24 hours for your projects, apps, crafts, and local services.

The Guidelines (no r/berlin without rules):

  • Every 1st of the month: This is the only day project showcases are allowed.
  • Berlin-Centric: Your project must have a clear connection to Berlin (no generic spam).
  • One Post per Project per Month: Keep it fair and organized.
  • Use the Flair: We’re introducing the "Kiez Creator Monthly" flair, which must be used.
  • No "Classifieds": This is not a marketplace for "Looking for a flat" or "Selling my bike."
  • No Commercial Promos: No party promotion or standard club events.
  • No Exploitation: Projects profiting from Berlin’s struggles (appointment bots, paid scrapers) are strictly prohibited.

Why wait until March 1st? We want to give you time to prepare. We’re looking for quality—show us the process, the story behind it, and what it brings to the city.

Feedback: What do you think? We’ll use the time until the launch to refine the rules based on your input. Let us know in the comments!

Note: Anyone spamming or violating the rules on March 1st will face a 7-day break (ban) for the first offense. Repeat offenders will be banned permanently. On all other days of the month, the no-promo rule remains in effect.

Advice Q for Brits: Where can I find good scones!?

Upvotes

Hi, I know this is a stupid question but I've had the worst craving for scones for nearing two weeks now and I can't stop thinking about them! (I feel like I'm in the book The Kamogawa Food Detectives! but less thrilling haha.) Where is the best place to get them in Berlin - ideally to eat at home, but am also open to cafés serving them - clotted cream and jam required.

There's a shop near me in Prenzlauerberg that was extraordinary to find because it's brimming with all my favourite goods from the UK, down to the Cornish clotted cream. Sadly no scones.

Question is of course open to non Brits too.

Thank you in advance :)

Sincerely, someone who grew up in London.

Politics Grüne oder Linke?

Upvotes

Politics What's needed for voting?

Upvotes

I got an invite for 20.09.

This might get taken down for being overly political, but it's REALLY IMPORTANT to vote, more than ever!

This being my first time - is there anything I should know except showing up at the right place with a valid passport?

Go vote!

Advice Mauer Park flea market scammers

Upvotes

Hot tip: when buying items, count the change you’re given back to make sure it’s accurate. Every time I’ve (34 f) tried to buy something at the flea market and haven’t had the exact amount they ask for, the vendors don’t give me back the right amount. They miss giving me back a euro or two but say the correct change. Know what you’re owed and double check in front of them.

Advice Mixed feelings about being an immigrant in Berlin

Upvotes

I moved to Berlin recently from India with a relatively nice job in AI/ML.

In India, I earned quite well and my whole reason to emigrate was to get away from the ultra-right wing religious and divisive narrative that the Indian government uses to stifle freedom of speech and divide people while rampant corruption makes the ruling class richer. Also, cleaner air, water, a fair justice system and respect for the rule of law.

I graduated from literally the best place to study data science and statistics from in India, and emigrated here legally. I have my A1 exam in the next month and I hope to be a German citizen someday.

I see online, pushed by the ongoing happenings in Saxony Anhalt - this rhetoric of immigrants being unwanted and Germany being only for Germans. Since the definition of what is a true German is debatable, most people just bring up jus sanguinus as a proxy decision criteria, which I will never satisfy by virtue of being born in India.

I feel like I don't belong in India because I'm not religious or a bigot, neither am I right wing or have any particular cultural attractions towards the Indian culture.

I really like Berlin, it's counter culture, it's quirky side, the German ADHD and efficiency, the high trust society and I feel much less cognitive load here than when I was in India.

But I feel with the rise of a certain party, people like me, just by virtue of being born elsewhere, who literally want to integrate into the culture and contribute with taxes and social service and ensure that Germany never turns into the place I left - this feeling has no place here. That no matter what I do, no matter how talented I may be, my place of birth and the color of my skin is going to decide my destiny in Germany in the coming days.

I don't mean to paint a picture of doom and gloom, but having moved to a new country and no one to share this with, I feel lost and maybe makes me feel like my days are numbered here.

Politics Tu wat!

Upvotes

Berlin braucht jetzt deine Stimme!

Casual People in Berlin are actually really nice

Upvotes

I visited your city and was a little nervous at first because I had heard there is a stereotype that Germans can be cold but to my surprise people that I encountered were so kind and nice.

I had a few instances where I didn’t know how to navigate the train or I just needed a little help figuring something out and almost everyone I asked was so willing to help me and were patient with me as I did not speak German and were helping me in English. The people that I ran into at shops and restaurants were also friendly and willing to answer any questions I had.

I am an avid traveler and one thing I noticed is that people in the city are generally respectful of others in public areas and are mindful of not bumping into others or blocking pathways. Also people can be direct when speaking but it is not in a rude way at all and they are willing to help. I never felt that anyone had a bad intention and I met some very nice people here and it was a great experience for me.

Interesting Question What bar is this?

Upvotes

I visited Berlin in 2019 and I remember visiting a really cool bar in the centre somewhere that was basically a big stair.

There was stairs in the middle and big steps either side leading basically all the way up to the ceiling. No tables; people were sitting on all the steps.

Any idea what that bar was?

Interesting Question Food vendors of Berlin selling at markets, how's it going?

Upvotes

I've always dreamed of owning a restaurant, despite not having experience in the food industry. As someone not backed by investors or a trust fund, it's really hard to make the leap because this "wrong step" would mean the loss of my life savings.

The general recommendation is to first try out food concepts at markets before committing to opening a full-on shop. To those who are already selling at markets: How's it going? Good, bad, I'm all ears, also to any tips or gotchas you're open to sharing. Thank you 🙏
