Policy/কর্মপন্থা Bangladesh’s Part in the Makkah Defense Agreement

What are your thoughts on this defense pact that Bangladesh seems to be flirting with?

Does this risk further deteriorating our relationships with our neighbors like Myanmar and India?

How does our troops get affected by it in conflicts in Middle East - conflicts that we are not directly affected by?

Does this bring in economic benefits?

Does it bring in energy security?

বড় ভাইদের গ্যানজামে গিয়ে ছোট ভাইর মাইর খাওয়ার যে ব্যাপারটা।

I don't think there is any benefit to either side. We probably won't even get invited. Wouldn't be surprised if USA is behind the creation of this pact.

A classic British tactic in play to create even more subdivision in an already devided muslim nations this time by Americans. We got nothing to do in this. We got no business poking nose in the middle eastern politics. I think our government is poking to put some pressure on india and get some leverage in future negotiations. Coz India became uncomfortably allied with Israeli government.

Not sure what your point is to the original comment. Whatever Pakistan does or doesn't do, Bangladesh is going to get dragged into defending a state that's constantly stirring up trouble. Why should we pledge our men to fight other people's wars in exchange for theirs, especially when we aren't even the kind of country under the threat of an invasion?

Also not to mention the clear bias in your points lmao, but thats beside the point

All fair points, that's a reasoning I can stand behind. However I fear we maybe trading away better alternatives for this, not to mention alienating our neighbours. Time will tell

u/Rubence_VA 8d ago

Its an idiotic decision especially other middle easter counter who are not going to join this pact will be treated as enemy. Like UAE is never going to jon this pact and we have huge number of expats there.

It'd bring economic benefit to only those with a mature defense industry looking to export their arms to other member states. The best we'd get is a 'discount' on inflated prices

For India, this would be a major diplomatic failure, and to cope with this, abnormal measures have to be taken, hopefully too, because a Bangladesh defence partnership with Pakistan would undoubtedly signal a need for similar defensive lens and precautions towards Bangladesh as much (or more, due to the complex border situation) as Pakistan.
For Bangladesh, the finances of Saudi and access to trade routes along with defence technology exchange with Turkey would certainly be beneficial, so the country has to think long term, which is also understandable.

The only thing is, India and Bangladesh beyond the localised issues caused by porous borders and water bodies related issues, and maybe more that I am not aware of, does not and have historically not posed any significant threat to each other, in-fact the relations at the very core are as familial as with India-Nepal, which would dramatically change and tank relations of the countries very significantly.

India never had any diplomatic relations with Bangladesh, it had relations with the government of Hasina, which it has explicitly made clear,

I don't think Indian-Bangladeshi relation will ever thaw if Modi's government continues to cling to the past,

as for the mecca pact I really don't think either Turkey, Saudi or Pakistan will be willing to invite us, we bring nothing to the table, our military is designed to keep us in control not to fight wars, we have no significant natural resources either.

We'd just be a liability with nothing to offer, and except for Pakistan I don't think Turkey, Saudi sees any benefit of threatening India since all three countries share good faith.

Man this is a little too much, if we did not have diplomatic relationship with Bangladesh, I would not be seeing citizens lined up at visa offices of our country and citizens as patients in hospitals of our country. The diplomatic relationship is historic, thats a fact.

u/Foysal_Araf 🇧🇩দেশ প্রেমিক🇧🇩 8d ago

So it's the Indian way of diplomacy? to house a mass murderer? You possibly can't expect Bangladeshis to have a positive view of India, as long as India's hosting Hasina and her goons.

u/stoic_divergent_8739 Indian 🇮🇳 Among us 8d ago

Our country also had a mass murderer as a PM, politics dont decide the collective social conscience. If Indians start thinking of Bangladesh the same way they think of Pakistan, it would become very dirty politically, very fast. It is the conscience of the people that has remained such, that it is impossible right now for an Indian to consider Bangladesh and think about threatening it or to be threatened.

u/Final-Tax6951 8d ago

You see people lined up for visas because India's puppet mommy decided not to built enough hospitals in the country that is capable of treating each different type of diseases. 55 years of relation and the only bragging thing you have is a bunch of medical tourist to show as a sign of diplomatic relationship with a country. well, people changing, can see what is going around. It will certainly get reduced.

u/stoic_divergent_8739 Indian 🇮🇳 Among us 8d ago

This does not reduce the relations between the countries, political relations and support of certain party cannot be compared with diplomacy, every country at the end of the day works for itself. Why is it that you expect India to act like it owes something. We look at Bangladesh the same way as an EU country looks at it’s fellow members, we were part of the commonwealth, part of the same geohistoric trauma, heck even part of the independence struggle of Bangladesh, where India’s support was a moral imperative (you do not have to be grateful, but at least acknowledge the historic significance of the relations at this point) towards Bangladesh being an ally as close as Nepal, which sadly reduced through the decades. My perspective on diplomacy is different than yours it seems.

This guy and his stupid comments.

In this 2005 report when BNP was in power: “Bangladesh ranks on top among the countries from where patients visit India and stay long for treatment every year.” India introduced medical visa that year to become a medical hub.

We have other reasons to dislike India but at least get your facts straight.

u/Final-Tax6951 7d ago edited 7d ago

how dumb you have to be to realize 2005 gdp wasn't same as 2020 or 2024. It was ideal time to invest in medical facilities. there's still time now to invest in hospital facilities. my facts are straight, apa was agent of india and never cared to make bangladesh less reliant of India and that includes medical treatments as well.

Pant pisser like you is the real reason bangladesh will not have any strong stance and indians get the chance to flex their superiority complex.

>India never had any diplomatic relations with Bangladesh, it had relations with the government of Hasina,

When people talk about [Country A]'s diplomatic relations with [Country B], the fact that the relation is orchestrated by their governments is implied.

Okay man look, your media feeds you ts, mine feeds me completely different stuff lol, I wont go further on that, but the fact of the matter is what I mentioned. Bro Nepal refused everyone due to operational reasons, they still took the aid we sent, but nvm. What I said was independent and on a realistic macro scale.

Trust me, I (along with a huge section of BJP critics) have been criticising godi media before you knew that term existed. I know my country from all angles. Thats why I said the media here feeds us smth, and your media as well feeds you a narrative. You claiming your media is somewhat independent is already their half win. As much as Bangladeshis Identify India with the ruling party they forget the huge chunk of Indians who are against them. I know my facts, and I know the propaganda. I am from Eastern Part of India and I have seen with my own eyes the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants being given Aadhaar cards in West Bengal and paid to vote, just so they can keep TMC in power. Politics is dirtier than you can imagine, its not black and white, these kind of topics I did not mention because I knew we would all have our different facts. That is why, the opinions I gave were on the macro scale.
India’s ties with it’s neighbour has not changed ONLY because of India’s doings, but failure of both countries.

You are wrong. I did not affirm Bengali Indian Muslim as Bangladeshi. I am indeed talking about Bangladeshis and especially the ones who came much later than even 70s, I can identify the difference in accents and words of a person from WB, and it was wide known the activities that went down in the rural parts there. I trust what I see and hear, I do not depend on reports. We have huge population of muslims, who told you we want to kick them?
Again, these notions are very biased.
The only ones being kicked are the ones living illegally. Again, different realities, except mine is based on what I have seen personally, I have lived in WB as a kid. I personally have seen so many Bangladeshi settlements in WB and as well in Delhi. The thing is, you would then talk about the Biharis, that come there. It is again a show of an endless greys in politics, that is why I am saying, we can only comment at the macro level, as our facts would always be different.

Unless we don't procure those J10CE MRCAs, they won't take us.

u/Aware_Television_814 7d ago

There's no point in joining this. The country doesn't run on emotions.

u/Still_There3603 7d ago

It'd be similar to Ukraine trying to join NATO.

I don't think India would invade or fund militias like Russia did but they would institute a tough embargo & possible blockade if Bangladesh really tried to join a defense alliance with Pakistan.

You all realize how terrible India-Pakistan relations are after Pahalgam, right?

u/Final-Tax6951 7d ago

India and Pakistan relation is like tom and jerry. they are good friends irrespective of events. Pahalgam attack is just another casual event that occurs every decade once. They just can't go around and make enemies out of every neighbour countries.

u/Final-Tax6951 8d ago

Myanmar has no power nd little to no relation with BD except a china deal for land trading route. The new government are not in any position to be dissent on bangladesh. India, they can interpret as they deem it. An enemy is better than a pretentious friend which will bite your back sooner or later. Maybe not modi but 10x more extremist yogi who is next in line for PM role. Bangladesh has to get a safety net as fast as possible. Remember, Iran was not spared despite 40 years of sanctions, committing not to pursue nukes, and no attack to Israel. Sooner or later, India will do it against Bangladesh if BJP or RSS backed any party remains in power.

Shortly on the other facts, Bangladesh is assured to get energy security and economic benefits. India will be required to decide whether they want to make a peace with us or not. If they chose not to, we will have a short time trading problems. That's all. Regarding middle East conflicts. South arabia doesn't fight much. and troops are anyway deployed for UN. They will do what they are meant to do which is to act as a safety guard for Bangladesh. If we are getting a safety net through the deal, basically troops will pay them premium of it from time to time. Simple give and take relationship.
