Mod Post Read the rules sub before posting!

Hi all,

Friendly mod warning here. In r/Astronomy, somewhere around 70% of posts get removed. Yeah. That's a lot. All because people haven't bothered reading the rules or bothering to understand what words mean. So here, we're going to dive into them a bit further.

The most commonly violated rules are as follows:

Pictures

Our rule regarding pictures has three parts. If your post has been removed for violating our rules regarding pictures, we recommend considering the following, in the following order:

  1. All pictures/videos must be original content.

If you took the picture or did substantial processing of publicly available data, this counts. If not, it's going to be removed.

2) You must have the acquisition/processing information.

This needs to be somewhere easy for the mods to verify. This means it can either be in the post body or a top level comment. Responses to someone else's comment, in your link to your Instagram page, etc... do not count.

3) Images must be exceptional quality.

There are certain things that will immediately disqualify an image:

  • Poor or inconsistent focus
  • Chromatic aberration
  • Field rotation
  • Low signal-to-noise ratio
  • Images that don't fill the frame because you were shooting through an eyepiece

However, beyond that, we cannot give further clarification on what will or will not meet this criteria for several reasons:

  1. Technology is rapidly changing
  2. Our standards are based on what has been submitted recently (e.g, if we're getting a ton of moon pictures because it's a supermoon, the standards go up to prevent the sub from being spammed)
  3. Listing the criteria encourages people to try to game the system

So yes, this portion is inherently subjective and, at the end of the day, the mods are the ones that decide and the mods are under no obligation to explain this decision to you.

If you are informed that your post was removed because of image quality, arguing about the quality will not be successful. In particular, there are a few arguments that are false or otherwise trite which we simply won't tolerate. These include:

"You let that image that I think isn't as good stay up"

  • See above about how the standards are fluid.

"Pictures have to be NASA quality"

  • They don't.

"You have to have thousands of dollars of equipment"

  • You don't. Technique matters.

"This is a really good photo given my equipment"

  • The standard is "exceptional". Not "exceptional for my equipment".

"This isn't being friendly to beginner astrophotographers"

  • Correct. To keep the sub from being spammed by low quality and low effort posts, this sub has standards.

"My post was getting a lot of upvotes"

  • Upvotes are not an "I get to break the rules" card.

Using the above arguments will not wow mods into suddenly approving your image. It will result in a ban.

Trying to argue with the mods using bad arguments isn't going to fly.

Lastly, it should be noted that we do allow astro-art in this sub. Obviously, it won't have acquisition information, but the content must still be original and mods get the final say on whether on the quality (although we're generally fairly generous on this).

Questions

This rule basically means you need to do your own research before posting.

  • If we look at a post and immediately have to question whether or not you did a Google search, your post will get removed.
  • If you asked Chat GPT or any other LLM, your post will be removed (see our rule regarding sources).
  • If your post is asking for generic or basic information, your post will get removed.
  • If your post is using basic terms incorrectly because you haven't bothered to understand what the words you're using mean, your post will get removed.
  • If you're asking a question based on a basic misunderstanding of the science, your post will get removed.
  • If you're asking a complicated question with a specific answer but didn't give the necessary information to be able to answer the question because you haven't even figured out what the parameters necessary to approach the question are, your post will get removed.

To prevent your post from being removed, tell us specifically what you've tried. Just saying "I GoOgLeD iT" doesn't cut it.

  • What search terms did you use?
  • In what way do the results of your search fail to answer your question?
  • What did you understand from what you found and need further clarification on that you were unable to find?

Furthermore, when telling us what you've tried, we will be very unimpressed if you use sources that are prohibited under our source rule (social media memes, YouTube, AI, etc...).

As with the rules regarding pictures, the mods are the arbiters of how difficult questions are to answer. If you're not happy about that and want to complain that another question was allowed to stand, then we will invite you to post elsewhere with an immediate and permanent ban.

Object ID

We'd estimate that only 1-2% of all posts asking for help identifying an object actually follow our rules. Resources are available in the rule relating to this. If you haven't consulted the flow-chart and used the resources in the stickied comment, your post is getting removed. Seriously. Use Stellarium. It's free. It will very quickly tell you if that shiny thing is a planet which is probably the most common answer. The second most common answer is "Starlink". That's 95% of the ID posts right there that didn't need to be a post.

Do note that many of the phone apps in which you point your phone to the sky and it shows you what you are looing at are extremely poor at accurately determining where you're pointing. Furthermore, the scale is rarely correct. As such, this method is not considered a sufficient attempt at understanding on your part and you will need to apply some spatial reasoning to your attempt.

Pseudoscience

The mod team of r/astronomy has several mods with degrees in the field. We're very familiar with what is and is not pseudoscience in the field. And we take a hard line against pseudoscience. Promoting it is an immediate ban. Furthermore, we do not allow the entertaining of pseudoscience by trying to figure out how to "debate" it (even if you're trying to take the pro-science side). Trying to debate pseudoscience legitimizes it. As such, posts that entertain pseudoscience in any manner will be removed.

Outlandish Hypotheticals

This is a subset of the rule regarding pseudoscience and doesn't come up all that often, but when it does, it usually takes the form of "X does not work according to physics. How can I make it work?" or "If I ignore part of physics, how does physics work?"

Sometimes the first part of this isn't explicitly stated or even understood (in which case, see our rule regarding poorly researched posts) by the poster, but such questions are inherently nonsensical and will be removed.

Sources

ChatGPT and other LLMs are not reliable sources of information. Any use of them will be removed. This includes asking if they are correct or not.

Content

Due to the profusion of AI slop apps, we're no longer allowing apps at all. No, we don't care if you're wanting a "review". No we don't care if they're free. No we don't care if you put it in a website.

Bans

We almost never ban anyone for a first offense unless your post history makes it clear you're a spammer, troll, crackpot, etc... Rather, mods have tools in which to apply removal reasons which will send a message to the user letting them know which rule was violated. Because these rules, and in turn the messages, can cover a range of issues, you may need to actually consider which part of the rule your post violated. The mods are not here to read to you.

If you don't, and continue breaking the rules, we'll often respond with a temporary ban.

In many cases, we're happy to remove bans if you message the mods politely acknowledging the violation. But that almost never happens. Which brings us to the last thing we want to discuss.

Behavior

We've had a lot of people breaking rules and then getting rude when their posts are removed or they get bans (even temporary). That's a violation of our rules regarding behavior and is a quick way to get permabanned. To be clear: Breaking this rule anywhere on the sub will be a violation of the rules and dealt with accordingly, but breaking this rule when in full view of the mods by doing it in the mod-mail will 100% get you caught. So just don't do it.

Claiming the mods are "power tripping" or other insults when you violated the rules isn't going to help your case. It will get your muted for the maximum duration allowable and reported to the Reddit admins.

And no, your mis-interpretations of the rules, or saying it "was generating discussion" aren't going to help either.

While these are the most commonly violated rules, they are not the only rules. So make sure you read all of the rules.

Astrophotography (OC) Andromeda Galaxy from Saskatchewan

I hope you can all stomach yet another Andromeda Galaxy photo. I made a post here about 6 years ago imaging the same object from the same location, so I thought it'd be fun to make the title the same as last time. It's quite the improvement, if I do say so myself. This was taken from my Bortle 6 backyard in Saskatchewan, over the course of 3 nights.

Capture details:

Telescope: Dwarf 3 Smart Telescope in EQ mode

Filters: Dwarf 3 Astro Filter

Light frames: 495 x 60 s (~8h15m integration time)

Gain: 60

Dark, flats and bias frames taken (the Dwarf 3 has master flat and bias frames straight from the factory)

Captured over 3 nights between August 28th and September 5th (lots of clouds)

Processing Details:

Preprocessing: AMSP python script in Siril to perform registration and stacking, including background extraction and a drizzle integration of 2x with a pixfrax of 0.9.

Processing:

- GraXpert to perform background extraction

- SCNR to remove green noise

- Plate Solved and Spectrophotometric Colour Calibration

- BlurXterminator

- Veralux Hypermetric Stretch

- NoiseXterminator

- StarXterminator

- AstroColorMixer Python script

- Lighthouse Python script

- Histogram stretches to accentuate the blue outer spiral arms

- Star Recomposition

- Bill Blanshan's Star Reduction (Stretch Factor of 2, mode set to soft)

- Brought into Lightroom to do some contrast enhancement and saturation enhancements

Overall, I am quite happy with this image, but I do wish the central core area was a bit warmer in colour. This is the first target I captured using my Dwarf 3 (and of course they had to release the Draco right after I purchased it), and I'm really impressed with this little thing. Smart telescopes weren't really a thing when I started with astrophotography about 10 years ago, and I am really glad that they are now. It makes this hobby so much more accessible.

Astrophotography (OC) NGC7331 - With Supernova 2026aaiv

NGC7331 is a spiral galaxy about 43 million light years from the Milky Way. It is similar in size and shape to the Andromeda galaxy.

On September 1st a supernova was discovered near the core of NGC7331. It has been identified as a Type 1a supernova, the result of a white dwarf thoroughly destroyed through a runaway thermonuclear explosion.

One of the images is cropped on NGC7331 with an arrow pointing to the supernova. The other is a bit more wide field.

I'd been meaning to image this area for a little while because it has a lot going on in it. In the lower left corner, you'll see Stephan's Quintet, a little cluster of galaxies ~300 million light years in the background. NGC7331 is surrounded by its own group of satellite galaxies, and you'll see a dozen or so other small galaxies scattered through the field.

The haze you see is called the Integrated Flux Nebula and was only discovered in 2004. It is part of the intergalactic gas outside the Milky Way, mostly hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and dust. It is reflecting the light from the entire Milky Way back at us and requires very dark skies and sensitive cameras to pick up.

EDIT: the supernova here is very cool, but that IFN haze is even cooler. It was only discovered in 2004, but is routinely imaged by amateur astronomers today. It requires a dark sky, but otherwise it is easy to pick up. The first time I imaged it, I thought my pictures were ruined, I hadn’t expected it. The reason it wasn’t discovered is because it takes really sensitive and low-noise cameras. I don’t have a particularly fancy camera. It’s a standard cooled Astro camera, the same one that most people use.

It says a lot about the quality of consumer electronics that we can even image them today so easily. I think they are really beautiful.

My updated M31 image stack from Bortle 2 skies (no moon, 3 arcsec seeing). 40 minutes of integration with 20 second subs. Captured using a Canon 6D MkII mounted on a Skywater HEQ5 pro with the EF 200mm f2.8 prime, at f3.5 and iso 3200.

Processed in Siril (OSC preprocessing) with GraXpert for noise reduction, then Photoshop.

Astro Art (OC) The milky way from a Florida wilderness.

2 minute exposures for the milky way and for the landscape using 35mm lens at f1.8 on a nikon z7. Milky Way tracked using a nomad tracker. I did about 15 exposures of the milky way but the clouds did not cooperate and I decided to just use one exposure. Not good enough to sell but I had fun making it.

Astrophotography (OC) LDN 1235 - Dark Shark Nebula

Dark nebulas are different to other types of nebulas that we image in that they do not emit any light - instead, these are dense clouds of dust and gas that block the light from stars and other nebulae behind them. Since we are imaging the absence of light, dark nebulas are difficult targets for astrophotography and require a long integration time as well as very dark skies, because light pollution washes out their very faint signal.

This is my first attempt at a dark nebula with my full AP rig - it didn’t help that I had to shoot from a Bortle 7 location, so I had to use an L-Pro filter and downsample the image before processing to reduce noise… Gradients were a pain as well - after trying several methods,  GraXpert did the trick but it was not easy. Still, pretty happy with what I could do!

Equipment and acquisition:

- OTA: Askar 71F with 0.75X reducer

-  Main camera: ASI585MC AIR

- Mount: Teseek 17

- Others: ZWO EAF, ZWO EFW

- Guiding: SVBony 30mm, ASI120MM Mini

NGC 7380 The Wizard Nebula

NGC 7380, also known as the Wizard Nebula, is a young open star cluster embedded in an active star-forming emission nebula located about 7,000 to 8,500 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus.

Visually, NGC 7380 is extremely faint and difficult to spot through a standard backyard telescope. Observers typically require very dark, clear skies and an Oxygen-III (O-III) filter to catch its faint glow. However, it remains a popular and rewarding target for astrophotographers using narrowband filters and long-exposure imaging.

Astrophotography (OC) M27 - Dumbbell Nebula

M27 is a planetary nebula located 1360 light-years away from us. An aging red giant star, similar to our Sun, ran out of fuel, ejected its outer gas layers (the blue and red colors in my image) and turned into a white dwarf star.

I started this project in 2025 when I didn't have an EQ wedge yet, so I was taking 10 sec exposures in alt-az mode. This year I continued in EQ mode with 30 sec exposures, and after stacking all subs, I realized the combined 10-30 sec stack had a really bad gradient because of field rotation, so I decided to only process rhis year's data. Taken with a Seestar S50 with its internal LP filter (Ha-OIII) and Askar C2 (SII-OIII) filters, about 10 hours in total from a bortle ~4.

Astrobin here

- Seestar S50 with LP and Askar C2 filters
- 732 x 30 LP filter (6.1 hours)
- 460 x 30 Askar C2 filter (3h 50min)

Processing (PI)
- WBPP of both filters, graXpert, BlurX correct only, NoiseX, StarX
- Starless images: Channel extraction with DBXtract, setiastro statistical stretch, setiastro perfect palette picker without SII (Realistic palette). Then, manual curves transformation with different range and color masks, CreateHDRimage, blurX, noiseX
- Stars: setiastro NBtoRGB star combination
- Star recomposition with pixelmath
- Final contrast and brightness tweaks

About the mottled background: it drove me crazy, but after looking up some discussions on Cloudy Nights and images, it turns out it probably is actual signal.

Other: [Topic] Is Sky & Telescope still going strong, and does it seem committed to keeping the print magazine around?

I'm thinking about subscribing to Sky & Telescope. I found a new-subscriber offer for $46.63 for a year of print + digital, which seems pretty reasonable considering they still publish 12 issues a year. A different magazine I subbed to in the 2010s reduced its yearly count from 12 issues to 6. Seems like there's barely any magazines left still making 12 issues per year, they've all reduced to 10 issues, 8 issues or 6 issues.

I'm curious what longtime readers think about the current health of the magazine. Does Sky & Telescope seem to be doing well and committed to continuing the physical print edition for the foreseeable future?

I'm specifically interested in print. I know nobody can predict the future of magazines with certainty, but so many publications have either shut down their print editions, drastically cut the number of issues they publish, or gone digital-only that I'm a little hesitant about subscribing to another one.

Back in the 2010s, I subscribed to a magazine and partway through my subscription they discontinued the magazine entirely. Instead of a refund, they transferred the remainder of my subscription to a completely different magazine that I hadn't subscribed to or particularly wanted.

For those of you who currently subscribe to Sky & Telescope or have followed it for years: how healthy does the magazine seem these days? Has the print edition remained pretty consistent? Does it seem like they're still investing in it rather than slowly winding it down?

Also reading how Astronomy magazine is now going to make two of it's issues per year a digital only issue also has me hesitant.

Astro Research EU quietly monitoring UAPs after Malaysian amateur astronomers sent 37 images” with links to Euronews / ANSA / Codice Quantico

Just wanted to share some useful background on this story, because the origin is quite specific.

The images came from a Malaysian father‑and‑son amateur astronomy team (Annamalai Muthu and Arav Annamalai) in Penang, who originally gained recognition for building a mobile digital lens setup with UV and infrared filters to photograph the Moon. Their project won the Gold Award at SCINEX 2020 in Malaysia and was covered locally (e.g. Cilisos):

Their planetary tracking work later drew correspondence from NASA’s research department and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency. In October 2022 they sent the European Commission a dossier of 37 sky/space images and asked Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about the origin of some unexplained objects.

In response, the Commission’s Defence and Space department said it had no authority to investigate incidents over Malaysia, but indicated it would push member states to improve detection of objects in Earth’s space environment, partly to better identify UAPs and space debris. This was reported in August 2026 by Euronews and picked up by multiple outlets:

The Markarian Chain, is a 2 hour exposure in HaLRGB with a Planewave 17" CDK 432/2939 f6/8 telescope, ZWO ASI6200MM Pro camera on a Paramount PME mount, it is 20 shots of which with the Ha filter 4x600 seconds, with the L filter 4x300 seconds, with the R filter 4x300 seconds, with the G filter 4x300 seconds and with the B filter 4x300 seconds, I processed with Pixinsight and I also used the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop trying to extract as much signal as possible

Astrophotography (OC) The Heart and its Sleeve

The Heart Nebula is usually framed tightly around the bright, familiar shape of IC 1805. For this image I wanted to pull back a little and show more of what surrounds it -- the much fainter emission that seems to spill away from the main nebula and disappear into the background.

This is a two-panel narrowband mosaic, with both panels captured through Askar’s D1 and D2 filters and combined into an SHO-style palette. The acquisition was the easy part compared with the processing: assembling the mosaic, balancing two panels, separating and recombining the different emission structures, controlling the stars, and trying to bring out the faint outer material without making the whole thing look forced ended up consuming most of a day in PixInsight.

What I like most about the result is that the Heart itself almost becomes only part of the story in the frame. The bright central structures draw the eye first, but there is an enormous amount of dim, tangled nebulosity extending beyond them.

Hence the title: The Heart and its Sleeve.

As always, best viewed full-size... there is considerably more hiding in the darker parts of the frame than first appears.

Astrophotography (OC) NGC7380- Wizard Nebula

This is the Wizard Nebula in the constellation Cepheus. I have a scope at a remote observatory and it’s easy for me to accumulate a lot of integration information n objects, so o often image the really dim stuff.

I wanted to image something large and bright and this isn’t an object that is imaged very often. Most shots on Astrobin are shorter integrations, so I decided to go deep on it. This is 48 hours of integration in a classic SHO palette.

The nebula you see here is about the apparent size of the full moon in the sky. It’s 8500 light years away, corresponding to a true diameter of ~40Ly. All the nebula you see here is being powered by light be star, right in the middle of this image in the blue area.

The blue you see here is excited oxygen and only glows when it is very hot. The red is mapped to Sulfur and indicates actively moving gas and the rest is just ionized hydrogen and mapped to green. Sulfur and hydrogen tend to exist in the same places, so those areas create a nice shade of yellow.

Question (Describe all previous attempts to learn / understand) Need help from Moon imaging experts

Ok, so I have two processing results from capture done in 29.08.26. Both are stacks of 150 images, both are supposed to show colors of the Moon, but the first image is processed in PIPP + Autostackert + Siril, while the second one processed in AstroSurface + Siril. Despite they both stack the same data, the colors looks to be inverted between this images. Best example is area near bright crater on top left, on first image its brown, on the second one, its blue. Which one is more accurate and what is the explanation for difference in colors?

There’s a star party being organised on Sat next week by the local astronomy club, which means I can finally take my still new-ish 12” Dobsonian out for a spin after what feels like forever. To prepare for it, made the following quality of life tweaks just now. Would be very interested to know any other such small but meaningful hacks people have done with their gear. TIA

  1. Dew shield cut out of a yoga mat. Bummer: Ordered black, this is what came, then forgot to hit the Return button on time. Have ordered another one.
  2. Stuck a Spigen 30000 mAh battery pack at the top rear end of the tube with adhesive hook and loop tape. Should take care of the cooling fan at the bottom (image #3) + iPhone stuck on the StarSense dock at the top. Because StarSense app running continuously = iPhone camera eating up battery. Bonus: Heavy 30000 mAh power bank at the back also acts as counterweight to my heavy Explore Scientific 82° eyepieces + GSO Coma Corrector. So win-win all around.

  3. ⁠Stuck the cooling fan USB + control pod to the primary mirror box with double sided adhesive tape to prevent things from dangling around. Now the cable goes nicely into the power bank.
