Food/Drinks Unpopular opinion, can’t there be some limits to the kids at breweries?

Upvotes

Gonna say this up front, parents need to socialize too and I think it’s great that there are places where families can socialize with their kids and adults in the same setting. My parents didn’t have this when I was a kid and I’m sure if we did, they’d take full advantage of it.

With that said, as someone who doesn’t have kids, specifically because I want to live a child free life, I can’t go to most breweries now without it feeling like a playground. I wish the bigger breweries at least had family sections or hours because some parents seem to just let their kids run loose. Some of these kids cause a ruckus and it’s frankly super annoying.

It’s just feeling like a LOT and again, I’m sure plenty of you parents reading this keep your kids under control and are great parents, but some of these kids are completely unsupervised and ruin it for everyone. Bars used to be for grown ups …

Public Service Announcement Optimum customers: check your bill!!

Upvotes

Shady mofos are billing *EVERYONE* on Autopay a late fee this month, because they claim their autopay system malfunctioned last month.

They told me they will not be automatically removing the late fee even though they know it was their fault the payment was missed.

The only way to get the fee removed is to call their customer service.

Check your bill!

Ask the Sub What do the signs say on the truck driving around downtown?

Upvotes

I saw it driving around as I came into work but could only read the one sigh that said "children deserve better." I am genuinely curious about what the other signs say. I am going to try to keep an eye out for it but was wondering who else saw it enough to read everything.

Calling all mechanics! Looking for recommendations/help

Upvotes

Howdy yall,

I’ve got a project truck that is my first time learning cars. I’ve done some work to clutch system and am now out of my depth with troubleshooting, believe it to be a hydraulic issue, but I’ve exhausted my knowledge.

Does any one have any mobile mechanic recommendations, or are a mechanic themselves that could help me diagnose the issue.

I’m obviously willing to pay any diagnostic fees, but am eager to learn as opposed to just paying someone. So I also offer some combination of beer/food if a local mechanic wants to do a good deed and teach someone some new Information.

Thank you!

Classifieds Where can you sell a wedding dress locally?

Upvotes

I know there are probably lots of places to sell a wedding dress online, but that seems like a potentially huge hassle. Is there anywhere locally? It’s a designer dress bought directly from the designer, professionally tailored but never worn. Oof. Donation is an option, but it would be nice to recoup even some of the expense.

Bears/Wildlife Facts about the recent bear attack

Upvotes

Hey y’all, I personally know the person who was attacked by a bear in Beaverdam a few weeks ago and have seen misinformation about the incident and want to clear some things up.

• The person who was attacked has not done any interviews. Anyone you’ve seen on the news talking about bears getting into their home is not the person who was attacked.

• She has not been feeding bears or doing anything to encourage them to be on her property/enter her home.

• Her only mistake was forgetting to lock a door. The bear entered through an unlocked door to try to get to a cat food bowl inside.

• The woman who was attacked is in her 70s and was seriously injured. She had to get dozens of stitches and a series of painful shots.

• We all know there are idiots in WNC actively feeding bears and encouraging interaction, but this woman is not one of them. She has been purposely staying anonymous for fear of people being nasty about the attack. Please don’t let assumptions lead you to saying an elderly woman who survived a bear attack “deserved it.”

Ask the Sub Bulk trash pickup — AVL app issue

Upvotes

Can other people successfully use the Asheville app (as the city website directs) to schedule bulk trash pickup?

I just downloaded to an iPhone, and I seem to be able to navigate every portion of the app except the “Simplicity” subsection of the app homepage to schedule trash pickup. You know, the whole reason I downloaded the app… 😅 it gets frozen on the disclaimer landing page.

Any tips?

I’ll just call tomorrow when they’re open if needed. Would just prefer to schedule multiple pickups without phone calls. TIA!!

Unhoused Population Asheville has been planning its way through homelessness for 21 years. Denver CO actually started bringing people indoors. Maybe we should compare the results.

Upvotes

For context, I was homeless for 3 years due to substance abuse, now 12 years sober and 15 years clean, and I very much care for fixing this problem. Ive been there and ive seen what it takes.

Asheville has been talking about homelessness since the 2005 10-Year Plan https://media.buncombenc.gov/common/humanServices/h2h-Dillashaw.pdf, yet we still do not have the kind of high-access emergency shelter capacity the city has discussed for years.

That is what makes Denver CO worth looking at. Mayor Mike Johnston declared homelessness an emergency when he took office in 2023 and moved quickly to bring people indoors through hotels, micro-communities, shelter, outreach, and services while still pursuing permanent housing. Denver’s unsheltered count fell from 1,423 in 2023 to 518 in 2026.

Denver did not choose between shelter and housing. It did both.

Asheville’s own experience suggests temporary shelter can work too. During the hotel shelter programs, dozens of people moved into permanent housing, reunited with family, or otherwise exited homelessness. Yet years later, Asheville is still planning, studying, and debating a permanent high-access shelter.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Asheville/Buncombe count found 824 people experiencing homelessness, including 334 people sleeping unsheltered.

I also compared the current mayor and City Council candidates in the Asheville Voter Guide.

Most talk about affordable housing, deeply affordable housing, supportive housing, rental assistance, and services. Those are important, but I found very few clear answers to a simpler question: how many emergency shelter beds should Asheville create, by when, and what reduction in street homelessness should voters expect?

That seems like the real question Asheville should be asking. Permanent housing is the long-term goal, but someone sleeping outside tonight cannot wait years for an apartment to be financed and built.

Denver appears to have decided that one of the first steps toward ending unsheltered homelessness is actually getting people indoors. After 21 years of planning, should Asheville be moving much more aggressively in that direction too?
