TLDR - brand new to the game, haven’t played yet, going to be starting with chapter 2 solo two-handed. Any recommendations on videos, tutorials, playmats for these circumstances?
Long - I’ve been into Lovecraftian horror for quite a while, but have never been into card games. I owned some Highlander TCG and Pokemon cards 25 years ago or so, but never played them. I have over 100 games in my collection on BGG but it’s mostly escape, puzzle, mystery, detective type games.
It seems like I’m getting into AH at the worst time, as the chapter 2 content currently looks like it’s going in a non-Mythos direction. And there seems to be no realistic way to get the chapter 1 content now, other than a lottery win or randomly encountering a yard sale after someone dies. The campaign expansions are impossible, and the older release format of the expansions seem to always have five mythos packs that are reasonably priced on the secondary market and one that is extortionate.
So my plan is to learn the game by playing chapter 2 stuff and stay current with that, and then explore the OOP content via Tabletop Simulator. As a solo player, whats the best way to set myself up for success/enjoyment when starting out? Anything I should be aware of when simultaneously trying to learn the rules while also enjoying the narrative?
Last year I got into Final Girl and enjoy that, which is what got me on the journey to becoming a solo AH player. With FG, I found the play mat helped a lot in terms of not being overwhelmed by everything I need to keep track of. Any recs for a good solo player mat for chapter 2 (or chapter 1 if there’s no difference)?
Also, the old core box is very cheap used, cheaper than the retail price for standalone scenarios. Is it worth getting the old core just to play the included mini campaign? Apparently it’s very similar to the chapter 2 core campaign?
