Discussion 🗣️ What are your views of this?

ChatGPT can now draw. Not generate images in 2 seconds. But use the cursor and draw, pixel by pixel using the cursor. It especially raises few questions:

1.If you know you are on the right AI is the next step of art then you do you need to general a fake speed paint video of digital painting just to get into the crowd of digital art and deceive people? Aren't you confident on your own product?

  1. What is the practical use case of mimicking a slow line by line digital drawing process when the primary advantage of gene AI is instant click creation? What is this Performative human impersonation?

AGI is a lie. It's nowhere near that point and never will be. An AI salesman is telling you it's here so you will buy more AI. He is dangerous and not to be trusted.

u/Uncommonality 5h ago

We don't even know what makes human minds what they are. It's impossible to tell science form philosophy, there's no actual data on the qualifiers required to create a thinking, sapient entity

Ergo, it's impossible for current AI to become AGI, especially since these systems have random mutations curtailed very harshly. They're just highly advanced algorithms

u/Pipnpaddlopsicopolis 4h ago

That's all they will ever be. Even calling it AI is disingenuous because that's really a marketing term that has seen widespread adoption due to all of the tech giants forcing everyone to call it that.

u/sleeptillalldarkness 3h ago

What is AGI?

u/oyputuhs 4h ago

Never will be. Lmaooo

u/AccountantJumpy2326 8h ago

Why do they even want to create "art"? I think it's more about the journey getting there, creating it. But of course everything nowdays is about speed, efficiency. Eh.. what's even the point arguing anymore

u/conordmcp 8h ago

Attention. They want to feel special, but are too lazy to try and become special

u/thewordofnovus 7h ago

It has little to do with making art, and a lot to do what the front tier models can make with a computer, if it can control a computer at a granular scale, what does that mean for businesses at large? for research?

u/Dense-Bison7629 8h ago

I mean, it's really no different from previous models. The AI isn't suddenly some art master just because it can work a mouse. It still is held back by the same errors in previous models

u/Szpagin 8h ago

More parlour tricks to distract from the fact that the AI rollout offers questionable returns.

u/dumnezero 8h ago

They are grifters. The term "AI" itself is just marketing. AGI is more so, and they will keep trying to redefine the word to match what their activity so that they can claim success. Of course, the illusion of success, of achievement, is not going to work in reality. The main targets of the grift are investors, and this will include pension funds.

u/CaptainNakou 7h ago

Honestly the ai drawing via the app is, for me, the less impressing thing, because I do believe it can be done algorithmically, and it would not be really hard to tune.

Like I can imagine designing a software that would look at an image, use filters to determine what's lines and what's colors, define layers and then use the tool of the app to draw it.

So it's really just a toy that will be used by scammers that will inevitably get them catched at some point, like any scammers.

u/learn_distill_repeat 6h ago

Some people just set the bar too low because they don't realize how high they can be setting it. It takes someone with at least baseline programming knowledge to see how simple something like that could be. A great deal of the population does not have that knowledge, though... so the illusion is enticing.

u/Due_Interest_178 4h ago

Software for drawing games that lets you copy an image into an online canvas have existed for at least ten years, yeah. It wasn't working with layers, or the same process as the AI one but it achieved the same result.

u/CaptainNakou 4h ago

Yeah as always the response to someone explaining to you what you can do with AI is "you know you could do that before, right?"

u/Arola_Morre 7h ago

It's a literal $50 billion payday teetering on the back of this particular tweet

u/Tausendberg 6h ago

And that's it, that is as far as this discussion needs to go. AGI was not legally defined in that contract and so Jensen Huang helped OpenAI sucker Amazon out of a cool 50 billion so that OpenAI can buy more fucking GPUs.

That's it, this comment should be pinned.

u/Least_Diamond1064 7h ago

Saying "AGI has arrived" is just smooth brained glazing. Demonstrate it in some way, that you've created an intelligence greater than a human's, otherwise this is like Trump saying that we've "won the war in Iran" and "The Strait of Hormuz is under American control". You have to demonstrate that claim otherwise nobody is going to take you seriously (less than they do already).

u/Mysterious_Eye6989 7h ago

Once again they reveal that a big part of their intent is deception.

u/saviorofGOAT 8h ago

It's shitty, but honestly I've been hoping this would come sooner than later since ai is apparently a plague we have to live with until someone gets off their ass and regulates it correctly or we all succumb.

But hopefully people will start stopping being so adamant for copious forms of proof from artists just to know whether or not they cheated using ai. No one will be investigating or caring if their amazon packages were delivered with ai or if their dinner was but apparently society deemed it acceptable to grill tf out of artists.

And to answer your other 2 points: These people are just LARPing and they know it but are already too delusional or pathetic to be able admit to themselves that they are too talentless, lazy, and greedy which is the only reason they use genai.

u/Mobile-Shower6651 8h ago

" copious forms of proof from artists " I'm sorry but yeah? I think a customer deserves to know if their product is authentic or cheap knockoff. How do you think this would solve this?

u/saviorofGOAT 8h ago

A customer or employer, yeah, but every mfr now thinks they're entitled to see everyones artistic process and source files in order to have evidence or else they'll start calling it ai.

And it fixes it because why the fuck would I go out of my way to record a speedpainting for you so you can look at every aspect of how I do art when any asshat could just generate that video for you + source files. Hell, AI is getting closer to generating a video of me at my computer making my art. What proof can I provide to you at that point?

u/Mobile-Shower6651 8h ago

wouldn't that just make any newcomer artist go broke and clients only being concentrated to already known artists. Like I know this X guy's been drawing since 2019, he's a real deal and has live streams but Y guy just joined and posted art.

u/saviorofGOAT 7h ago

That's essentially what's already been happening. Most Fiverr clients are just wanting you to clean up ai trash, so that might go away when ai is indistinguishable? But more importantly, not every artist is comfortable going through this investigative process just to be accepted. I'm not shy, have decades in graphic design, and generally dgaf, but it's a ridiculous request of society to make of basically any profession. It's like a witch hunt in the literal sense, everyone's guilty until they prove themselves innocent, just no one's being literally burned. Only now proof can never equal proof, so where's the witch hunt headed?

u/Melodic-Junket-9105 8h ago

OP do you think humans have the monopoly on drawing? If so why?

u/Mobile-Shower6651 8h ago

If humans don't have monopoly over drawing, then why do you need to pretend to be human to generate your "drawing"?

u/Melodic-Junket-9105 7h ago

Why do you think it's pretending? It's a robot that can draw. That's a cool and promising demo of computer use abilities.

To use a loose analogy, robots build cars now. Are they "pretending" to do what human coach builders once did by hand in your opinion?

u/Mobile-Shower6651 7h ago

they don't label it as "human made" when building the cars. And for the ones where humans do work like Rolls Royce features cost more because the iconic coachline is hand painted by a single craftsman rather than applied by a machine.

It is pretending when you are generating a speedpaint to prove you as a person drew this instead of AI. If you want another loose analogy, then it's same as someone who listed their sweater as "cotton hand stitched" is actually shipping polyster factory produced sweats which are manufactured in bulk but trying to charge at the same price as the former. There's no question in morality, it's straight up customer fraud.

u/Melodic-Junket-9105 7h ago

I was not aware that people were passing this off as human made. The content I've seen was just showcasing the AI's abilities.

This is more a testament to shitty humans than shitty ai I suppose

u/Hot-Bison5904 7h ago

Isn't it only going to get worse? A few years ago I was going to put together a process tracker. I stopped pretty early on when it was clear the final result would be very specific types of cameras watching you very very frequently. The requirements for sharing process will likely now include videos of you as the artist drawing. Anyone who rejects this process but doesn't use AI will likely do so for very specific artistic reasons (and their ability to do so will be a privilege of a few).

u/saviorofGOAT 7h ago

"the requirements" don't need to be requirements, they are what society made up. Why would the requirement turn to forced doxxxing of yourself? And how much longer until ai can seemlessly and perfectly make that video? Then do I have to buy a special motion detector suit?

It's time to drop "the requirements" and look at if the artist made good usable art, or even better, take all your energy and focus it against the politicians allowing it and the tech companies fueling it, rather than trying to figure out if every artist has morals.

u/Hot-Bison5904 7h ago

Because the person behind the art is important to people viewing and paying for the art. Anyone who puts output before the person is just paying for AI

u/saviorofGOAT 7h ago

That's not true at all. How many people have you met who don't know or give a shit about celebrities but still enjoys the movies they're in or bands they're in. Just because some people do enjoy that, not everyone does and it doesn't equate to some sort of generally negative personality trait.

Also just to clarify when I said "you" and "your" in the end of my last comment it was about a person in that situation not literally you... Idk you obviously

u/Hot-Bison5904 7h ago

I mean I've studied AI and people's relationship with it for creative things at a pretty academic level. My ideas didn't just come from nowhere. Like I get where your idea is coming from and it's very hopeful but it doesn't map to what we've seen in the real world.

Even people I know who are pro AI are annoyed about seeing AI images etc out and about so the need for human proof will only continue and the data from it will likely also continue to help build AI. Again it's not a prediction that makes me happy... It just is what I predicted and have continued to see play out

u/saviorofGOAT 7h ago

Oh I'll admit I'm on the hopeful side of things, I always try to give the benefit of a doubt, but It doesn't make sense to do anything other than balance out this way now that proof is becoming irrelevant.

Going from being annoyed by seeing ai images to all artists must provide proof of all art wasn't a logical step, and soon I and no one else will be able to prove anything unless we're in person. So where's that next step if you can't require proof?

The end of artists and everyone continuing to assume the worst in everyone else? Or the end of witch hunting and giving minimal benefit of the doubt again? We give that to every other profession, why not artists?

u/Hot-Bison5904 7h ago

I'll give an example using your earlier example. Viewers might not care all that much about the inner lives of an actor or actress in a movie but they still see them in a movie. They're going to be more interested in seeing the actor in the movie then knowing that the actor produced it. They're going to be significantly more interested in seeing the actor in the movie then thinking that maybe the actor might have produced it or that maybe someone else did. The actor's role is their evidence.

Viewers meanwhile often react very differently to a CGI recreation of a long dead actor. They won't view that actor as in that movie. They're impressed by the capabilities of the CGI but not the capabilities of an actor who isn't actually in the movie.

I'm happy you're being hopeful! I think hope is really needed in these times. So I'm not trying to discourage you from that. But I also think a realistic balance is needed for artists who will be expected to continue to give more and more proof (however unfair the requirements will be) so they they feel seen and understood.

u/Intelligent_Sail2010 8h ago

Just a few more ways to steal.

u/Dimosa 8h ago

If we ignore the new features astra has, like drawing etc. It does not score much better or even worse as its predecessor and competing older models. Legit, its not a step forward. Im fairly sure we've plateaud.

u/Thepersonwhoasked_69 8h ago

In what moment in those additional 400K GPUs according to this fellow, are we going to transition from the current LLMs we have, with an extra spin that is the ability to move a cursor, to a full fledged AGI? Not to downplay it, but like, in what position is he to give a certain prognosis that the AI’s performance will neither stagnate nor get diminishing returns?

I don’t really think any of us are in the position to completely deny it either, simply because we cannot predict these systems out of their sheer complexity, but it does come across to me as hype

u/Ur-in-a-tor 7h ago

LLM tech cannot turn to AGI. They are knowingly lying.

u/Important_Level_6093 7h ago

I hate having an Nvidia GPU.

But there aren't really any options I know of for an AI free PC anymore

u/Far-Shake-97 7h ago

Didn't they say that agi was here last year already ?

u/hurricane_news 7h ago

This is the third time Leather Jacket claimed AGI was here. LLMs can't be AGI, period

u/Grim_9966 7h ago edited 3h ago

It's a step backwards being flaunted as a step forward.

If an LLM can already produce an output in seconds, how is "AGI" forcing it to manually do the process to a lower standard?

u/Achereto 7h ago

Something's missing. 100K+ GPUs to model 1 brain?

u/colers100 7h ago

Both Jensen Huang and Sam Altman have proven with considerable consistency that they literally don't know what AGI is, let alone how to reach it.

They show their benchmarks because their target audience is too fucking stupid to understand Goodhart’s Law; once you publish a benchmark, it stops being a good benchmark.

We don't know how to get to AGI, because transformer-based AI's only accurately model certain kinds of intelligence.

We all know what's happening here; the noose is tightening, and if they don't figure out something soon they'll destroy the entire US economy and end it as a global economic superpower within a year.

Furthermore, a master student can reliably develop a script capable of copying that within like 1-2 months tops.

You just use a bot capable of UI interaction/detection and mouse manipulation as a base, set it up with correct references to the canvas and tools, take the image, send it to an API that has the kind of image transformation filters that you like to mimic, decode it's pixel layout, determine the dominant colors, and then have it do the dominant colors first, adjust it with secondary colors and then do the details by just feeding the bot pixel-accurate instructions and the correct tool instructions. I mean, fuck, I can probably do this in an afternoon myself by correctly nudging GPT 4+

u/Illustrious-Sense194 6h ago edited 6h ago

AGI isnt even remotely close to being achieved.

You cant just feed an LLM more data and GPUs and get an AGI out of it, thay just not how it works.

This is entirely marketing hype to scam more investment money.

Edit: also the drawing in real time thing is very clearly a gimmick built exclusively to scam people. I mean, scams is already what AI excels at but this is so blatantly a "Look AI artists, you can now trick people into thinking youre an artist for real!"

Its a pretty direct attack on actual artists, likely driven in large part by real artists all fuckin hating AI.

u/Cellari 6h ago

So for it to be able to draw, I need to provide a reference material, so it can make a lesser version of it? That's just copy paste with extra steps. xD

u/AlexRaven0491 6h ago

The answer to your question "what is the point of the performative human impersonation" is pretty self evident. They need to keep this charade going. A lot more impressive to see a clanker interact with a GUI and work on a windows machine directly, rather than doing obscure crap in the background. Makes it easier to demonstrate that their AI is like a typical worker because HEY! Look! Its clicking and swiping and doing stuff on Windows, just like Steve over there.

In reality, its the same dumb LLM at the core of it. Same idiot that can't count letters, same hallucination machine, only now, it clicks on buttons. Great as a teaching tool and good for simple stuff, but that's about it.

You and everyone else should expect this BS to continue for some time , especially the interactivity part. It's literally the only reason windows made the whole recall crap in the first place: to train models to interact with the GUI. Machine learning can be used for a LOT of things, given enough data, it can learn to do a mediocre job in just about any field you throw it in. They're mashing these capabilities together in hopes that they create the illusion of progress. Sure seems like Astra is smarter than other GPTs, because check it out, it can model stuff in Blender now, one click at a time.

u/Lucker_Noob 6h ago

This is just marketing hype....

u/richfx01 5h ago

Jensen Huang should really be in prison for a number of financial malpractices, in our insane world he's technically not breaking any laws though. Also as someone on his way to being a trillionaire he's completely above the law anyway. All we can hope is karma gets him and he's as miserable in his personal life as Musk, Clammy Sammy Altman and the other sad broligarchs

u/sleeptillalldarkness 3h ago

Even if it does art, there still bigger elephant to address

u/Gmanglh 3h ago

If this is the "agi" we poisoned towns, the economy, and the planet for i gotta ask thats it? Seriously even if ai had absolutely no downsides the recent "upgrade" has been nothing, but a wet fart and i some how doubt that more cards are going to change that.

u/plasma-dragon-DA 2h ago

It's desperate sales patter trying to drive any remaining amount of investment they can before OpenAI collapses. Declaring that AGI has been achieved is the last card they have left to try and create hype.

u/joeph0to 2h ago

And the bubble grows larger and larger... AI people are so delusional. I just want our fresh water to stop being wasted

u/Quinzal 0m ago

"PLEASE investors, AGI isn't tomorrow, it's today! Honest! Ignore all the analysts saying we'll be bankrupt by 2027! I swear you'll get your payout soon!"

u/SupersededByClaude 7h ago

I am curious if it's really something only Astra can do. If we put Opus or Sol or GPT 5.5 in the same harness, won't they, by chance, accomplish the same?

Also, while the progress is impressive, the fact that N GPUs can get you somewhere doesn't automatically mean that 4*N GPUs will take you 4 times as far. It may be log(4). Or there may be plateau.

u/Titan__Uranus 8h ago

I love watching you luddites squirm lol

u/Mobile-Shower6651 7h ago

👌

u/LazyNam- 7h ago

Is that what qualifys as an argument down here?

u/Mobile-Shower6651 7h ago

if your counterpoint revolves around " watching you luddites squirm lol" then yes.

u/LazyNam- 7h ago

Since when is that my counterpoint
