Meditation I stopped taking meditation so seriously, hoping it would finally click
I'd love to chat about meditation for a bit. I used to view it as this serious, spiritual thing, but all that pressure just made me feel nervous and tight every time I sat down. Everything shifted once I realized it could simply be five quiet minutes in a comfortable position.
I’ve put together a few low-effort techniques that are helping me turn this into a natural daily habit.
1. Breath Focus
All you have to do is pay attention to your breath. When your mind drifts off, you just notice it without stressing and bring your focus back.
2. Counting Breaths
Count each full breath from one to ten, then restart. One inhale plus one exhale equals "one," the next is "two," and so on.
3. Body Scan
A slow sweep of attention from your toes up to your head, just noticing whatever you feel—warmth, pressure, tingling, or even nothing at all. You gradually move up through your feet, calves, knees, thighs, hips, belly, chest, hands, shoulders, neck, and face.
4. Loving-Kindness
A simple practice of silently sending out good vibes to yourself and then to others. Picture someone you love naturally (a friend, a pet, or your kid) and silently repeat: "May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be at peace."
I’d be super grateful if you added your own thoughts to these. It’s definitely a personal path I’m walking through right now. I’d love to hear about your own motivation and what inspires you to stick with it.

I love this. I struggle with the self imposed seriousness of meditating that it makes it feel so intense. Thanks for sharing these tips, I’ll be putting them into practice 🙂

i’m so glad it resonated with you! i think letting go of that seriousness is what finally makes meditation feel approachable. it doesn’t have to be a perfect practice or some profound experience every time. five quiet minutes where your mind wanders half the time still counts!

Well yeah, 5 minutes is always better than nothing, but over time I'd recommend gradually increasing the duration, because I've noticed huge benefits since I've been meditating for 45 minutes a day.

thanks! could you please share your journey toward practicing 45 minutes of meditation?
and what your actual practice looks like?
appreciate the insights! ❤️

Wow, this is almost exactly what I was going for when I invented my own Zen lite version which I'm calling "Casual Zen". Strip the ultra formal and spiritual part and make it less demanding, so that meditation becomes something that feels good and you don't have to force yourself to do it.
Meditating should be as easy as sitting on a couch and relaxing - I'm calling it "afkazen". And if you have the energy to put a little more effort into it then you go with breath focus etc. I still want the seriousness and philosophical depth of Zen in my life and spread the message, but I think that traditional zazen can become kind of a dealbreaker for a lot of folks.
I think once you get into a healthy meditation routine the rest opens up organically.

thank you for your wisdom!
exactly! it’s so much easier and more achievable when you strip away all the unnecessary ultra-mystical, spiritual stuff.I’m currently working on making meditation a daily habit.
I hope your community gains lots of grateful mentees!
feel free to join mine! let’s share our journeys!

I deeply recommend ‘Bare-Bones Meditation’ by Joan Tollifson
She tells her human story beautifully while illustrating that all of life is meditation

I dig your simplicity, nice!
2 more alternatives:
1) find a community to meditate with. Even if it's only 1x per week, doing it alongside other people, finding kindred seekers...makes a big difference inthe soul IMO.
2) if you're digitally-inclined, the app/game PLAYNE creates a really nice sense of building something as you Practice. You slowly grow a digital forest as you meditate, so there's an external image of the internal beauty that's happening. Pretty useful if you're just getting into meditaiton.

ty!! and i really appreciate the extra ideas too, i’m sure they’ll be useful for other people reading through the comments as well
i’d never heard of PLAYNE before but growing a little digital forest as you meditate actually sounds ridiculously motivating haha! and i really like the community idea too. have you ever meditated regularly with a group yourself? if so, i’d genuinely love to hear what that experience was like because i’ve never tried it

my pleasure 😄 I know the creator of PLAYNE, and he's a great guy who wants to help people ease into meditiaton practice, so I'm happy to hear it sounds intersting to you.
meditating in groups - yeah, I've done a few retreats with a religious community. staying connected to my own religious heritage is important to me, and that community hits this beatiful balance of honoring wide spiritual traditions while maintaining a firmly christian identity. i'm grateful for it.
Meditating within a group makes me absolutelty buzz. sharing a *silence* is a deeply human+world connecting thing. even more than sharing say an opinion or outside experience. but on top of that, know that other folks find value in the journey inwards helps me feel grounded and not so alone. like I'm not the crazy one haha.
it also helps me encounter both "the divine" and my true self. spoiler alert: I think the two are very intertwined, and the more I meditate the stronger I experience that.
In most major cities, there are buddhism-based meditation or talks (called dharma), which tend to work well for religious an non-religious alike...since buddhism isn't really a religion per se. If you're not into organized religion, I'd recommend one of those groups! There are also many online gatherings - for example Meditation Mind on discord (completely non-religious).

wait you actually know the creator?? haha okay now i’m even more curious about PLAYNE and definitely want to hear more about it!! could you tell me a little more about how it works and what the experience is like beyond growing the forest?
and thanks for sharing your experience with group meditation too. the way you described sharing a silence honestly makes it sound like such a comfortable, safe space to feel connected to other people without even needing to interact in the usual way. i also really like that meditation has helped you feel increasingly connected to both your inner self and "the divine". it sounds like those retreats have given you something genuinely meaningful!
and ty for the recommendations on where to actually try group meditation!! i’ve never explored that side of meditation before, so you’ve definitely given me something new to look into :)

I find that when focusing on breath my thoughts are - am I forcing the breath or is my breathing completely happening on its own. Any tips on this?
