The movie makes brutally childish jokes, but they are still funny.
Think airplane, in space, and in german. Not the same quality of course, but still pretty damn good at the time. Nowadays all the homosexuality jokes would of course not fly though.
As a gay man, even now I love these jokes made at my expense. You can clearly feel that while the jokes in the movie obviously play on stereotypes they are in no way meant in a hostile way. I love this movie to this day, just as much as 'Schuh des Manitu' which also has its fair share of gay jokes.
True, but I wouldn't even have an issue with homosexuality being the target of jokes as long as it is obvious it is meant as simply (dark) humor and not meant to be taken seriously. I have a pretty dark and wierd sense of humor myself, so it would be pretty hypocritical if I treated my own group any different in that regard.
Out of the "German comedy" genre that mostly consists of silly, childish poop and sex jokes and boomer humor, this movie that is a Star Trek parody is indeed one of the better ones.
The other most popular German comedies are utter garbage: from "Fack ju Göhte" to "Plötzlich Prinzessin". It really is like Merkel from that one South Park episode wants to prove to the rest of the world that Germans indeed have humor and has commissioned the government to create the funniest movies of all time, which failed at doing so spectularly. The existence of these movies is probably the biggest stain on all of German history.
TLDR: If you're looking for good German humor, don't watch German comedies.
True, but that seldom translates really well. The only satirist/comedian with international appeal speaking German I can think of right now is Hazel Brugger, and she is Swiss.
This, but our comedians suck really hard. I mean Mario Barth sold out fucking stadiums (i don't know if he still does). That's the state of german comedy
If you didn’t know this was basically just a Star Trek Parody using "haha, the characters are gay and hate each other like bitchy teenage girls" as its sole punchline with some Star Wars sprinkled in and were only taking this picture at face value then yes, it would be funny. People have been carving dicks in caves for millennia and before those Christian prudes came about, people found that plenty funny.
To be fair when i watched it over 20 years ago as a kid it was the funniest shit I’ve ever seen. But movies like this don’t age very well and its absolutely political incorrect now. No way a movie like this could ever be successful again.
That's just virtue signalling from people beeing unsatisfied with the overall situation.
I'm gay, and I don't know a single gay person who knows the movies and doesn't like them at least a bit. Not one of them thinks it's offensive. Context matters!
We'll see when the sequel to "Der Schuh des Manitu" drops this year whether this still works in the modern German movie market. I wouldn't be surprised if it does honestly.
yet at the same time, whenever the germans raid any other subreddit, the only joke they can remember is "sprich deutsch du hurensohn" as if it was the pinacle of humor.
