It’s not doomerism, we’ve been hearing about missing targets and not doing enough for decades now, nature is collapsing all around us and we keep on upping emissions every year. The biggest polluter is about to ramp up their emissions even more, the fight is over. At some point not facing the fact that we failed to secure a prosperous future will cost more lives.

We need to shift from prevention to adaptation. The current food chain is not going to feed us much longer, so we need to start working on alternatives. Our coastlines need better defenses, and/or we need to relocate people over the next 100 years as sea levels rise, and we need to start fortifying against ever more extreme weather.

That same president gave GM a gargantuan stimulus package, and GM thanked him by putting it all into manufacturing those electric vehicles that the same president hates (because they wouldn't provide the job numbers OR tandem benefits to the carbon economy that he needed).

The world doesn't blindly follow America. Even money doesn't blindly follow America anymore. Green tech is the way of the future, and everyone except Trump and his carbon states knows it.

They have nukes, they are loyal, they want Europe to be strong together, build our own weapons in shared programs instead of buying American, they help our space program, they are not trying to spread corruption - they are even pragmatic regarding China instead of following the whims of a country that is sadly becoming a parody of itself and forces our hand as a result ( I remember Trumps last legislature, with "friends" like that you don’t need enemies ) maybe even seeing a chance to put pressure on Russia via Beijing IF we were to come together so it doesn’t result in us becoming a divided mess but instead a truly independent entity.

That’s more than you can say for nearly any other member state.

I am exaggerating a bit of course, especially considering how close they are to a far right or far left victory. The point is this: you say they want to take over. I say this kind of policy is one of the only ones that could keep us from being taken over precisely because it is selfish.

A strong Europe is good for France, that’s the crazy part. It’s good for Italy, it’s good for Germany, we could all win if we would just dare to actually DO something.

Of course, if we all just idle and do nothing while France pushes ahead, it looks like they are trying to take over but the way I see it we are literally doing nothing so any movement looks revolutionary to us. If we were to just move with them instead of being a roadblock to our own detriment it would already look far less like a take over and far more like a movement for Europe by Europe.

Edit: and just for the record; if he was Italian, Belgian or Polish I would say the exact same things.

A strong Union is good for France, I’m not quite sure if a strong France is good for the Union.
I’m not antagonistic to what France pushes, per se, in a vacuum.
I’m antagonistic towards why they push for it.

As for the “with a stuck Union, every movement looks revolutionary” I’d agree.. if that was my concern.
Is our goal moving or is it going forward?
I’ll remind you that the nuclear umbrella had strings attached back then, when NATO was still a certainty.

I can only repeat myself but let me rephrase my thoughts: We are running into a Europe where the USA pulls in one direction and China in another and choosing sides selfishly ends up hurting all of us.

The French nuclear umbrella having some strings attached is obvious but the strings would be so much less concerning than the alternatives and if we wanted to, we could even find a compromise but instead we are not even negotiating…

Additionally, let’s not forget that we grow together over time. It doesn’t happen over night but the ties between us increase. Slowly, very slowly.

I have a vision in my mind driving me. I see a world where the authoritarian systems use autonomous Armee drones, where AI and robotics have made weakened the influence of the people drastically, where Europe goes back to the Cold War or worse.

A future where we have lost. Where my own country has sold itself out for a bit of cash, where neoliberal economics have privatised everything with no back up plans and all of Europe is dominated by powerful foreign influence, having lost any kind of advantage we still have today.

Where another Lybia will seem like the least of our problems. It has already started. Nothing I wrote is just speculation, the pieces are moving, we are running out out time fast, we need to act NOW. This isn’t going to be an issue that just crashes over is but like waves eating up the cost you see us loosing bit after bit and then eventually there comes a moment where the damage is done, irreversible, the clock has run out and we will no longer have any agency.

So my question to you is that: what is your plan here? Seriously, what do we do? Macron has his ideas. I may not agree with every detail but at least it’s something!

That’s the issue here. I would love to have this big push of countries, all coming together and understanding the danger forming a collective plan. It has not happened. We are weeks away from Trump 2 and there is next to NOTHING of substance.

So I say we have to take whatever we can get. Or alternatively, we all get our act together. But continuing as we have so far, that’s going to hurt. A lot. The choice is ours.
