The problem is that the system usually let's these people go. When I was in high school, my dad thought I wasnt home and had my mom cornered in the basement. I heard a scuffle, my dad said something about murdering her, and my mom yelled for me to call 911. She had marks, but he was released the next day.

Fking Christ. My dad threw my mom out barefoot into the cold just cuz she took her phone back. The fking prick is in his 60s & still has the balls to do that. My mom's a stay at home uneducated & doesn't have the guts to send his dumbass to jail. My life is in shambles financially cuz of him coercing me & he used me like a doormat & I listened to him cuz I was intimidated by him & didn't digest the after effects of lost time that I'm suffering now. I should've called the cops on him when it was happening instead of unnecessarily tryna work dumbass off jobs (the issue was him coercing me to work odd jobs to keep paying for Obamacare instead of just taking Medicaid due to a dumbass reason). Now I'm still living under his roof after getting away from him by flying to the otherside of the world & him saying my mom needs me, he got laid off & re-hired back now he's fking useless cuz he works in NJ & has my mom serving him & can't do shit for himself & he's a cloud architect engineer.

I just need more time to fix my life in the US - what did your asshole prick father do? Like what's a big part of the iceberg - can you tell me? I'm curious.

Shes just fine. I probably sound cold, but my mom could have easily sold the house and kept me from his abuse, but allowed me to also go through it... so I'm a bit bitter. She watched him kick me and put his hands around my throat as a middle schooler.

So yeah, she's fine. She had a bunch of babies from different men to keep the child support flowing and is currently remarried to a sucker. I also helped her with her bills in my 20s despite what she allowed me to go through.

She didnt deserve abuse, but she also was an abusive parent in a different way, although there were a few times she took a page out my dads book and hit me with those little tree branches that bend really easily so they dont break (we called them switches), and also hit me in my face.

Honestly a nice apology from her is all I need, but I'll never get one. I believe in God, and I realize nobody is perfect, but at the same time, we are supposed to feel remorse, and she doesnt seem to. Forgiveness isnt a ticket to do whatever you want without repercussions.

I also understand if someone cant get there when it comes to forgiveness even if the other party is remorseful. It's not my place to decide.

Think about it this way. I've seen stories about some elderly Alzheimer's patient turning super racist as they progress and there is debate whether that's "actually who they were and just can't hide it any more" or if it's just a tragic side effect of their brain decay and they never actually hated black people.

Whether they are, were, weren't or aren't, who would blame a black health care worker for not wanting to put up with that shit?

I won't get into the problems my mother and I had growing up or how my step dad complicated things even further (and yeah he hit me too and that's not the worst of any of it) but I'll take my childhood over how you e described yours any day of the week... But my mom did give me a really fucked up piece of advice years ago that has actually informed the way I (don't at all) interact with her in the last few years. "You can't pick up every sick hurt puppy you see on the side of the road, some of them are just going to bite you, piss all over you, and die"

She has a lot of mental and emotional problems. She never sought help for them. She's the metaphorical puppy and I'm not going to make myself a piss target by letting her get with in range again. Even now, she is nearing the big end of life decisions and nobody knows her like I do. The few people in her extended family who are helping only see her a couple times a year and they don't know what's behind the curtain like I do.

For me, an apology would have been nice years ago but without some effort to change always would have been too little too late. I finished mourning for the apology I was never going to get, years ago. She can't be convinced that there is anything she could possibly feel remorse for.

I listened to her harp about forgiveness for a lot of years before I finally realized what she means when she says it. To her, "forgiveness" doesn't mean me absolving her of some transgression, to her it is just me agreeing to wipe away the tally mark of my perception of her transgression (my perception because she never believes, agrees, or understands that it has any merit) so that her column doesn't start looking super lopsided. Her asking for forgiveness is actually her demanding appeasement.
