Police shoot & kill 20 year old Hispanic man—after family told them he was having mental health crisis.
He was trying to harm himself with knife—nobody else.
"I should've never called for help," his aunt said.
"If they were just going to shoot him."
"He's mentally unstable... he wasn't trying to hurt the police whatsoever—he never pointed the knife at them."
Police issued a statement saying that Johnathan Delgado ignored commands to drop the knife—then walked toward them.
Chief said that the officers involved are under "administrative review."
Incident occurred in a back alley of north-central Phoenix, Arizona.

There's a way to bridge the gap so to speak. Shoot them with less than lethal ammunition from the get go. That way there's no chance for the person in crisis to harm others or themselves.

Cops have to spend hours at the shooting range. They have to spend 0 hours in mental health training. A lot of them have PTSD themselves. That is a recipe for tragedy.

It's pretty well known in the gun community that cops can't shoot for shit. I believe the NYPD released a review a few years back showing 90% of shots fired by officers miss the suspect entirely.
Limited budget for live training plus a lot of outdated information being that little training is a bad combo

They're actually not, no. They're trained to protect themselves at all costs and to follow a protocol to the T without diverging from it with their own critical think.
Show up with overwhelming numbers and with lethals and non lethals drawn and ready to go
Give loud lawful orders over and over and over and over and over again. They don't dictate how the situation goes, we (the police) do
If they refuse to follow orders, use force until you get compliance or until they can no longer resist
If you fear for your life, or can get the lowest common denominator to believe you feared for your life, then shoot. Don't take any chances. Your life is more important than theirs
That's how police are trained. Only very specific roles within a PD learn anything about talking someone down. And that's usually just lies until they can get cuffs on you anyways.

The fact that the family had to call the police to resolve the issue shows that he wasn’t listening to nobody. Not even a Psychologist would be able to talk him out of it. The cops tried to taze him and it didn’t work. Have you ever had someone with a knife run toward you? You think you gunna talk him down? You gunna shoot the knife out of his hand? No you’d shit ur pants. The average cop has better problem solving and communication skills than the average Redditor. Miss me with that shit.

Yes, that's what family always says. A mom going up on the stand in court to say that her son couldn't have killed someone because he was with her carries no weight for a reason. That's what you should expect family to say.
Yet people who want to hurt themselves often move towards the police with a weapon when the police arrive because it's easier to force them to shoot you than it is to kill yourself with a knife.

I'd like to add that someone running at you with a knife can close the distance in literally no time like just seconds and alot of people either don't realize this or just totally choose to ignore it. If hes closing in on them and the taser didn't work then I hate to say that it sounds like they made they right call no matter how heartbreaking this is. I don't like the police as much as the next person so if their account of what happened is true than they had only seconds to make a decision and I doubt its something they wanted to do but someone charging another person with a knife and it being deadly can literally happen in just a few seconds. One swipe to the throat is all it takes.

I have been around this situation and we're it not for the fact that my city sent a mental health specialist along with the gun toting racist that wanted to shoot my friend, he got the help he needed and is now doing quite well instead of being shot by the untrained cop that wanted to murder him.

My city had trained mental Health experts who will call the cops the second a weapon is mentioned. They’re fine and useful talking down a random druggie or homeless person. But beyond that, they too need the aid of a person with a weapon when crap hits the fan

There was a situation here where cops did a wellness check on an individual with mental health issues. They were met at the door with him armed with a handgun. Tried to talk to him to be shot at. Until body cam footage was released everyone was saying how bad the cops were. Body cam footage released? No more posts no nothing.

Yeah, this happens all the time, in every city in America, big or small. The police are trained to demand compliance, when a mentally ill person, will not comply, the police will escalate the issue. They will at best injure the person, and more often kill them. Do not call the police. Call a crisis line. Where a trained mental health professional will come out. Sometimes with the police, but the odds your loved one will survive will be much greater.

Hate to tell you, but if someone calls the crisis line outside of banker’s hours, that call is getting forwarded to the local law enforcement agency to handle. 99% of places in the U.S. don’t have 24/7 mental health response teams.
I don’t disagree with your point though. Just pointing out it only really applies to larger metro areas, and usually only during regular business hours.

I live in a small, rural county with 24/7 crisis support... Maybe because we are a blue state?
But... Something very similar just happened in one of our small towns. Family calls 911 for a family member having a mental health crisis. Dude picks up a brick (from about twenty feet away) and the local police blast him into the next life. Then it quietly gets swept under the rug.
If you can do anything, please don't call the police. They will kill your family member.

I live and work in a blue state, less than an hour outside a major metro area, but since we’re in a different county, we don’t have 24/7 crisis support. Anyone who calls the hotline is referred back to local law enforcement if they need actual intervention.

The issue is that they eventually need police intervention because weapons are introduced.

I've been trained as a police officer.
When someone is approaching you with a bladed weapon and is not following commands, deadly force is the appropriate level on the use of force continuum.
Cops are not mind readers. They're regular people that need to do this 10,000 days in their career and are not required to ever get stabbed just because someone makes a video and doesn't understand the first thing about law enforcement.

tasers fail all of the time, like more than you can possibly imagine. The probes don't dig in.. or they hit clothes, or like with the taser 10 you have to fire twice
A knife is far more deadly than a gun if they're close and charging.
Ive seen bodycams where an officer has put 18 rounds into someone with a machete charging and they still kept coming... deputy had to retreat and the assailant eventually dropped to the ground

Everyone needs to watch that video series they train cops with on how quickly someone with a knife can close a gap vs how long it takes to draw and fire an accurate shot, it ain’t like a video game folks, you’ll be getting sliced up and possibly losing your gun in the blink of an eye if you don’t react right.

A knife is a lethal weapon, a taser is a less lethal weapon. Lethal force is met with lethal force.
Additionally, tasers are not extremely reliable tools, and are generally not an appropriate solution to a threat when imminent loss of life or grave bodily harm is present.
