Abdul El-Sayed: The real Red Scare is that Donald Trump is still President. The reason that our economy is rigged so that we have a trillionaire and the average person can’t afford their basic life is that we’ve allowed corporations to buy and sell politicians to rig the system against us.

u/o7_HiBye_o7 16h ago
America left is Global center. Nothing about our politicians are far left.
•
u/Bigerst_Dook 16h ago
I think most people in the US forget that, we don't actually have a left side it's just far FAR right and center at best

center at best
this is doing a LOT of heavy lifting idk if this country is ready for actual left politics sadly
•
u/o7_HiBye_o7 14h ago
You're correct in the fashion you wouldn't think. Our left is center on most issues, excluding a few things and LGBT specifically bc that is a hard issue everywhere in the world.

El Sayed is pretty moderate by global standards, but the DSA wants to abolish capitalism, abolish prisons etc. That is far, far left, even by global standards.
•
•
u/Raeandray 8h ago
The DSA is a small group that doesn’t speak for all democratic socialists.
•
u/SidewaysAcidRain 8h ago
The DSA is the largest democratic socialist organisation in the US, by far.
What do you think a larger demsoc group is?
•
u/Raeandray 7h ago
It has ~120,000 members. Approximately 1/3rd of self-described democrats consider themselves Democratic socialists. Thats around 10 million Americans.
There is no organized official Demsoc group.
•
u/SidewaysAcidRain 7h ago
Do those self-described democratic socialists want to abolish capitalism? If not, they're really not democratic socialists.
It's a far-left political ideology, basically by definition.
•
u/Firm-Investigator262 14h ago
Stop bullshitting, the DSA is working within the confines of American Politics
•

They explicitly want to remove your right to vote for the president, get rid of congressional districts so you’re no longer directly represented by anyone who you can hold accountable at the ballot box, abolish the senate which is likely unconstitutional and would trigger a civil war, and remove all checks and balances from congress.
“Replace the President and Supreme Court with an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.”
“implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, and abolish the Senate.”
They also want to
“Establish public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries”
Which they can’t afford to do legally, buying a 51% stake in the S&P500 would basically double the national debt, so this is a call to steal stocks which includes everyone’s retirement accounts and pensions
Add on their promise to “Pass a federal jobs guarantee” and that right there means companies will be forced to become more inefficient.
“Protect, expand, and enforce the rights of all workers to form, join, and strike with their unions, regardless of industry.”
Except if you’re a cop because they want to “disempower police unions” I just find it funny that “regardless of industry” uses a different definition of regardless than I’m accustomed too.
My other favorite contradiction
“Socialist feminism fights for queer liberation and the freedoms of all working class women” and “the right to self determination in a free Palestine”
Yeah little problem there since Islam and women/lgbt rights don’t exactly mesh like at all.
And the stupid train doesn’t end there they also want to
“End economic warfare against countries whose governments act independently of the United States”
Which on their international page explicitly calls for being nicer to the governments of Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
Oh and we’re also going to have open borders because who gives a fuck about wages being undercut and an already stressed housing market
“Legalize migration, grant amnesty for all immigrants regardless of status, provide a path to citizenship for all permanent residents, and end visa caps and quotas.”
•
u/jonasnee 12h ago
“implement proportional representation and ranked choice voting in all elections, and abolish the Senate.”
Of all the things to hamper onto the DSA, which there are plenty, this is pretty weak. The American election system is weak, and the constitution likewise. And suggesting neither could or should be reevaluated based upon more modern better functioning democratic systems that exist is silly.
•
u/felis_scipio 12h ago
Abolishing the senate will lead to a breakup of the country, the small state vs large state issue hasn’t changed.
Abolishing the right to vote for the president takes power away from the voter, I’m fundamentally against that.
Proportional representation in congress means abolishing congressional districts and that will disenfranchise large swaths of rural and suburban America. Expand the house so people are more equally represented is great, ranked choice voting to break the two party system is great, but this is a very large and very diverse country and every slice of it should have a voice.

Expand the house so people are more equally represented is great, ranked choice voting to break the two party system is great, but this is a very large and very diverse country and every slice of it should have a voice.
First of all most proportional representative systems still have districts, they are simply diluted with none district seats to more accurately portray the actual vote. It is a far more fair system that actually lets voters have real choices, and enables more than 2 parties to exist, which is more democratic. If 10% of the US evenly distributed across the nation wanted to vote for a 3rd party they would get exactly 0 representation from that, and it is thus against their strategic interest to vote for someone who might actually represent what they want.
The current American voting system is also infamous for gerrymandering where politicians essentially cut up their state to guarantee winning more seats, so your system in practice simply does not work. PR are basically immune to this.
Whether you want a Senate is a decision to make, there are other ways you can fix it, like giving each state a bonus amount of seats so that small states are slightly more represented, this is how the EU works. Also sorry its silly to argue this would lead to a civil war, the US is a nation-state, there is no real reason to believe the country would break up like its 1860 today - this is a very weak argument sorry.
I am not saying you can't argue against any of the electoral system changes, like presidential elections or senate votes but esp. when it comes to the house of representatives the American system is incredibly weak and undemocratic. The system is inherently designed to be as undemocratic as possible.

u/SidewaysAcidRain 14h ago
They literally say those things.
•
u/Firm-Investigator262 14h ago
Who does and where did they say it? "Literally"...they mainly concentrate on reducing corporate power, regulation and a medical system that is not the Yank corporate system...how scary!! Do you watch cable news is that why you think that crap?
•
u/fractal_ball 12h ago
Megan Romer, DSA co chair explicitly said she supports abolishing prisons, borders and the senate in an interview
•
u/SidewaysAcidRain 14h ago
On their website. In interviews. In their meetings. On their subreddits. Etc etc.
•
u/Firm-Investigator262 14h ago
Have you told anyone else about this plot? JFC
•
u/o7_HiBye_o7 14h ago
Waiting for any source. I haven't heard any of your claims. I think you are over reaching with something they may have said. I haven't heard a single politician say abolish prisons. They may take stabs at for-profit prisons, but that would be an example of your words being exaggerated.
•
u/SidewaysAcidRain 14h ago
I recommend you start with their reddit - there are myriad examples of people asking whether the DSA is truly socialist, whether they really want to abolish capitalism, the police etc, whether they wouldn't have more success with moderation. The answers are always very clear. They are unrepentant socialists. Explicit anti-capitalists.
"But those are just some random redditors", I hear you say.
No, it's their official platform:
"Imagine taking a day off from work in a future without capitalism."
"the reality is that we're not fighting for a kinder, gentler capitalism."
Etc etc.
It's true that elected DSA members (e.g. AOC) tend to immediately moderate. Cynically, they might realise that lying is in their best interest. More charitably, they realise that the DSA is actually batshit insane, but they hold on to the label because it has some political benefits. But note for example that AOC is actually no longer endorsed by the national DSA, because they see her as too moderate. That's how far-left the DSA is.
•
u/o7_HiBye_o7 14h ago
My comment was specifically US politicians. Not an activist group like DSA. That is where my mix up was. My previous comment about "I haven't heard that" was referring to politicians.
•
u/SidewaysAcidRain 14h ago
My first comment in this thread:
El Sayed is pretty moderate by global standards, but the DSA wants to abolish capitalism, abolish prisons etc. That is far, far left, even by global standards.
Someone replies:
Stop bullshitting, the DSA is working within the confines of American Politics
And now I'm getting downvoted for being correct. Fucking classic reddit moment.

This! The American Democratic party platform is a center-right platform in Europe. We have no true left and now that the new emerging Dems are inching towards Euro center-left they act like we are becoming a straight up communist party.

As someone with European friends as well, I don't trust them one fuckin bit to have a thorough understanding of US politics.
Even this AI summary of yours is just flatly wrong on several policy descriptions among Democrats.
Democrats do support universal healthcare, but I imagine that your understanding of politics is so surface level that you think "universal healthcare" just means Medicare for All, but it doesn't. Medicare for All is a more broad and robust healthcare plan than any other country on the planet, but I bet your European friends didn't know that.
Biden attempted to implement hundreds of billions of dollars worth of student loan debt forgiveness. That's the most robust initiative he could have possibly implemented towards "free education" during his term.
The fact you think this summary counts as a source is hilarious. Just abject laziness, no doubt born by whatever your social media algorithm has fed you.

AES is making a good argument to pull all aid from the area. Every dollar spent on aid to Israel or Palestine is a dollar not spent on American kids. Stop all spending to the Middle East. Let them figure it out. I'm sure they will.

America's Democrats are the rightists in many countries, the American Republicans are far right. Both are imperialist parties. These people are not your saviors electoralism will let you down

It’s very simple. The system was made by rich people to get richer. We need to elect normal people to deconstruct it

For 30 years American presidents have told Bibi no to his ask to attack Iran. Within 4 hours of his meeting with Trump we had carriers steaming to the Persian Gulf. That's how much time was spent thinking about the consequences.
30 years because that's how long he's been in power.

Extremist. But he is hiding in plain sight because people are blind
•

He's not an an extremist and who cares that he's a Muslim?
Blind? You're so blind with hate that's it's destroyed your objectivity.
Go worship a pedo and traitor and pretend that that makes sense...

El Sayed’s policies have no place in American politics.
•
u/A220Pilot 8h ago
Why not? Are you a big fan of corruption and oligarchs?
•
u/WestCoastDan92626 8h ago
No, and that’s why he has no place in American politics… socialism is like the world’s worst Ponzi scheme.
