Yes. Airline employees are legally allowed to detain people. They have certain federal protections specific to their jobs. They fly over state lines, if that helps you understand their jurisdiction.
Also, you see all those FAs detaining the guy in the video? Seems like they can, you’re welcome to find out.

Duct taping someone’s mouth could actually suffocate someone. Like if someone has an asthma attack with their mouth forcefully closed. It’s much safer for everyone if he was just restrained. It’d be hella annoying to hear all his bitching and moaning but at least you’d know he couldn’t do anything more dangerous than spit.

If there was no violent, disruptive behavior, attached to those words, I was wondering what the justification was, to bind him to his seat like that, completely immobilized with duct tape.

I’ve flown nine times in the last ten days, which is only a bit above average for me. And I have never witnessed a passenger confrontation, let alone one that escalated to anything substantial. The odds are overwhelmingly in favor of absolutely nothing happening.

Most horrifying thing I’ve seen on an Airplane was when one of my students was seated next to this nice Japanese lady who insisted on showing him all of her vacation photos on her phone. He is such a nice kid so he sat there for three hours while she talked and talked. I’m not sure I would have been able to endure that.

Pretty sure the crew that did this to a Frontier passenger back in 2020 lost their jobs. You cannot physically restrian someone to the aircraft itself because you're removing their ability to self evacuate in case of an emergency. Hand restraints are fine. This is not.

When do we just put a jail cell on each plane? Take the back restroom and put bars on it like an old West jail. Use handcuffs not duct tape. Give the attendants badges to enforce the rules. First one in the jail is when seat F35 thinks he can off the plane first.

What the post leaves out is the man also allegedly physically assaulted the passenger sitting next to him. They tried to contain him with zip ties, but that was not enough so they had to escalate to using duct-tape. The passenger also appeared to be heavily intoxicated. The plane had to make an emergency landing because of the incident.
