There are municipalities that have fully decided to quit doing a big chunk of municipal government work. Instead, they make all neighborhoods be HOAs, so that the neighborhoods take care of all the typical things that neighborhoods need.

But this means that instead of properly democratically elected officials and career city workers taking care of problems, power-tripping neighbors get to run things, and that means you get a lot of stupid rules. And those stupid rules get enforced by those power-tripping neighbors having nothing better to do than wander around the neighborhood and issue fines.

I have seen this happen. Our HOA had a guy who worked for Spectrum and did everything in his "power' to block Google fiber from coming in because it would "inconvenience" the home owners as they have to make alterations to our streets.

We got him out on the next election cycle, and guess what proposition passed on the meetings for discussion? That guy was a POS, and everyone was glad he moved away too. We found out afterwards that he was some top exec at Spectrum and the reason he was so hard pressed on monopolizing that shit.

I feel like my wife and I must be the only people in the world who have a chill HOA that brings us only benifits and no drawbacks.

We live in a 14 lot HOA next to a lake. Half of the houses aren't on the water, but because of the HOA we still have deeded dock space on the shared HOA dock. This is a dock specifically dedicated to the 7 houses not on the water. We also have a small shared HOA park space leading up to that dock with an in ground bonfire pit.

ALSO all the houses in our HOA share the same sewage drain field, so our HOA fee (which is only like $60 a month) covers our entire sewage bill, in addition to the dock space.

We all meet just once a year to go over budgets numbers, etc. Nobody ever bothers me about my lawn or my bushes or any other dumb shit like that.

Not all HOA’s are bad, it’s these ones with primary rich old whites, those are the ones to avoid. For instance my parents bought land a built a house in an HOA when I was kid, the only rules for the HOA was minimum sq ft to build and no mobile homes, no multi family dewelings, no Live stock, no foul bigger than a chicken, and you could only have 5 chickens. It was just implemented to encourage single families to buy and create a small neighborhood.

Coincidentally, across the street, no HOA, 2 acres worth of land, a developer crammed in 32 homes very small homes.

Grandfather was a national gladioli comp winner, but it skipped a generation since dad worked at Nintendo. Dad DID inherit and grow his prize winning bulbs though. He was 6”6 (according to the special casket people) and flowers were taller than he was!

I’m a nursery specialist at Bunnings. Not saying I know everything, OR that I would ever tell an everyday customer to try and revive a plant like that. Just saying it is possible. It is painstaking and doesn’t always work so not worth the time, effort and gamble in many cases.

My neighborhood growing up was an HOA till a lawyer moved in, got on the board and shut it down. We moved in after it was disbanded so I am very unsure of any details, its just what all the neighbors would tell us.

I moved out of that place into a house with a friend and ThenGF and the house was in an HOA. Needless to say my wife and I did not live their long. They told me I couldn't have the breed of dog I had. He was a mix, I should have asked them to prove his breed, but nah, we just gtfo.

People don't. Developers do. HOA's are a scam that developers can use to get approval from local governments.

Imagine a developer builds 1,000 houses. The development needs roads, stormwater ponds, streetlights, landscaping, entrance signs, maybe a pool, sidewalks, walls, parks, security gates, drainage systems, etc.

Under a traditional model, the developer might build much of that infrastructure initially, but then dedicate things like the streets and drainage infrastructure to the city or county. From then on, taxpayers maintain them. Local governments say no to the builders, and they are assed out.

The builders come back and say.... We'll set up an HOA to pay for those, then the local government says yes!

HOA's are not for the owners. HOA's do not make anyone's lives better. HOA's are not about protecting home values.

HOA's are a tool that housing developers use to get tax breaks and and permits.

I can’t understand why you would want to buy your own home so you can do whatever you please only to be under stricter guidelines than if you were renting. If you paid for the home, land and all the decor for it inside and out, then you should be able to do what you please! I understand fines for yards that are trash with garbage all over and grass that is torn up or extremely under maintained. But, a $50 fine for putting your trash can out too early or leaving it out too long at the curb. I don’t understand why you can’t pick your fall and Christmas porch decor and when you put it up (I agree that fall should have to wait until September 1st though & Halloween should be appropriate not disgusting / disturbing.) Yeah, we moved out of an HOA once because I deployed and while gone my grass, that was one of the better lawns in the neighborhood turned brown. I was meticulous with it while home and kept our landscaping absolutely perfect. My wife was doing everything she could to run the home with our kids and a full time job. Then the HOA came in and started fining us every day. My wife and I both called to try and explain the situation but they were complet ass holes about it. I got back from deployment and we immediately moved, but we kept the house and now only rent it out to young families who do the absolute bare minimum. Fuck that HOA we will never live in one again.
