I just hate having stuff like this held up to me as evidence that I'm wrong about their being major issues with the police. They want propaganda from one good act to wipe out hundreds of bad ones.
And people also need to understand that bad people can do good things and vice versa.
Not letting a family die in a burning building is what we should have people like police for, but it doesn't wipe out or balance out the complaints either.•

Perhaps you should consider what an insignificant minority those "hundreds of bad ones" are. It isn't really propaganda to point at the fact that the vast majority of law enforcement officers never have any significant "bad act" throughout their entire career but most have many "good acts". Especially when the majority of officers committing the "bad acts" are already punished severely for them.

Farmers will tell you "one bad apple doesn't spoil the batch" is the dumbest idiom because 1 rotten apple can quite literally creat an environment where all the apples rot much faster. This is the principle behind ACAB. Good cops do exist, but as long as the fraternity protects that bad ones, they're all bad.

Not exactly. ACAB (or the “bad apple” analogy) refers to the fact that cops almost universally cover for other cops when they commit crimes. That’s not the case to anywhere near the same degree in most other professions.
It is in some narrower situations, though, like all of the medical professionals, coaches, and university staff who ignored and covered for Larry Nassar’s abuse of gymnasts. You could certainly say all people who worked with Larry Nassar and knew about his crimes are bastards. But it wasn’t “all doctors” or “all gymnastics coaches.” Just those in that particular sphere.
But another issue is that cops are doing the job of law enforcement, so by covering crimes they are doing the exact opposite of what they’re supposed to be doing. And it leaves the people, civilians, in danger from the very system that is supposed to protect us.

Please explain why police departments hire cops fired from other departments for misconduct.
Explain why when cops break the law, they are most frequently put on admin leave, rarely fired, and almost never criminally prosecuted.
Explain why police budgets in major cities surpass $1 billion/year, but police can't be bothered to test the millions of rape kits they have in backlog.
Explain why police caught abusing Flock and Axon systems to stalk ex-girlfriends - abusing authority to commit a felony - are simply fired instead of charged and banned from ever holding a position of public trust again.
None of these things are important to their ability to do their jobs. They are clear and flagrant abuses of trust and authority. As long as the police system protects these criminal psychopaths within their ranks, why should I assume anything other than the institution is irreversibly corrupt?

It's complicated. I think a lot of people pick a camp when really both things can be true. Cops save lives & keep the worst people from ruining our lives, and bad cops can be the ones ruining our lives.
Stuff like this just kinda happens in positions of power. The room for abuse is off the charts.
But people can abuse their power in almost any position. One of the most overlooked positions of power come from teachers & school faculty. People just assume because the school vets them before hiring, they can do no wrong, yet you'd be hard pressed to find a school in my area that hasn't had a grooming scandal at some point.
It's hard to run a society when the power gets to everyone's heads. Lol.

Unfortunately I'd say most of them are. First they are usually type A personalities. Second they see so much shit they get jaded. So they reach a point they don't give a fuck anymore, and in the right situation they will do bad things. Thirdly a lot of them have PTSD, and as someone who has PTSD I can tell you when it gets triggered I have no control of myself. I'm never violent but I will cut you to the bone with my words. But police officers sometimes have to use violence even if they are a good guy. But even a good guy with PTSD might take that violence too far. But we need them, and thank God for the good ones.

Cops like him are the reason I used to dream of being a police officer as a child. Then I grew up and realized the corrupt system I'd work for, and changed my mind.
Still, I have had jobs where I worked closely with the cops, and I appreciate the good ones when I see them. It doesn't change that the system needs to be fixed, but cops like this one deserve recognization.

Serious question. Don't Cop cars have door breakers in the boot? They're essentially just a star picket driver that cost like $20. Shouldn't this be a standard part of a police car's kit? Or, maybe training to use their standard issue gun to shoot the lock in a way that the bullet goes into the wall and not into someone who may, or may not be on the other side of the door? Not that I'm a l'm a proponent of cops shooting their guns, but this would be such a situation that a gun could definitely be of use. Sure, it's not going to break the tongue, but unless the door is going into a steel frame, the bullet is going to disintegrate the standard wood frame and the door is going to open.
Not an American, so not an expert on guns like all Americans are, but I've had to kick down an external door after a cyclone when the wood had swelled thanks to flooding so the door wouldn't open. That door was solid wood and the frame was hard wood too, built in the 1930s and it took 2 had kicks and a shove to get in after the storm so this can't be that much different.
