Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Upvotes

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Tech Support Adobe CC horrible performance on decent hardware, girlfriend at risk of losing her J0b.

Upvotes

My girlfriend just got h1red at her university to edit videos (noarly reels for Instagram and 20 second videos recorded with an iphone). She's supposed to finish w0rk on her personal machine at home. Both Premiere Pro and After Effects 2026 are completely broken, constant crashes and freezing.

**Her setup:**

- Acer: i5 12th gen, RTX 3050, 32GB RAM, Windows 11 (fully updated, recent (9months)/clean install) , 2 SSD (non raid). 512+1TB.

- All drivers current, reinstalled GPU driver with DDU.

- Already reinstalled Premiere (After Effects still crashing)

- Hardware is definitely overkill for this work I guess.

**The problems:**

- Premiere: stuttering, freezing, lags and crashes.

- After Effects: crashes while working or says "insufficient memory" (even with simple projects)

- Both programs randomly stutter during editing basic iPhone clips.

**What we've tried:**

- Full reinstall of Premiere.

- Updated drivers and Windows

- Windows maintenance.

**The memory issue is bizarre** — Forza Horizon 6 runs at 60fps high settings with zero issues, but a simple MP4 tanks both Adobe apps.

Is this a known 2026 issue? Any actual solutions? She's stressed about losing the j0b and has tight deadlines. Appreciate any help.

We're from 3rd world country so our financial situation is not the best, right now getting a new device is nearly impossible.

Tech Support CapCut mobile editor

Upvotes

So for almost a year now, I have been editing TV show/movie edits and when I create them inside CapCut, they look good. They have good quality and they’re smooth but when I upload them to TikTok.
They’ll be good at the start but Depending on the file size if it’s under 30 MB, the video last one to three days if its normal file size without lowering bit rate, they are lasting 2 1/2 weeks. The quality gets distorted to the point where it’s a muddy look, and gets a little laggy. The video gets compressed so hard to the point where it’s literally unwatchable not to mention the covers are always distorted and look bad. I’ve been trying to fix this problem for almost 6 months now with multiple AI programs and haven’t found a solution. I’ve heard it was my aspect ratio due to me uploading in 1080 X 1080 instead of 1080 X 1920 but I don’t think that’s the solution just because the covers still come out bad and the actual frame of the video is not in the normal place on the tiktok feed screen compared to after effect editors but other than that I’ve tried everything. Is there anyone that knows a solution?

Other (requires mod approval) Title: Finished Edit Page training — what should I do next?

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve completed my Edit Page training. What should I do next to actually practice what I’ve learned and get a deeper understanding of it?

Should I spend some time practicing the concepts from the training first, or should I move on to other videos and come back to practice later?

What would you recommend?

Hi, I am still new at video editing and haven’t dabbled into too much and have mostly used the basic/free options to edit like on canva or adobe express or even tiktok. but I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me learn how to make this effect. Here’s a link to the video: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8cqEdQN/
I am trying to create something similar with the before and after in the background, but want to make the on and off sliding overlay.

Thanks! I appreciate any help I can get!

Tech Support Best way to speed up a slow motion footage for the correct speed in premiere and double the fps?

Upvotes

Basically I have a 0.5x slow motion footage that was recorded at 30fps, so Im going to speed it up 2x in premiere to be 60 fps with normal speed motion.

Since is my first time doing this I just want to be sure, I suppose I just have to create a 60 fps sequence, put the 30 fps footage there and set the speed to 200%, right? So I don't end up having to re render or redo work.

Or is there a correct way to do or some kind of effect?

Thanks guys!

Tech Support Frame Capture

Upvotes

I have a video shot in 960 fps slow mo and would like to know if there is an easy way to split a small segment into indivual frame by frame footage, not just using the scroll though video slowly. Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Free Stuff Hi guys, I created a website about 7 years ago in which I host all my field recordings and foley sounds which are all free to download and use CC0. There is currently 150+ packs with 1000's of sounds and hours of recordings and foley all perfect for video editing. (August/September update).

Upvotes

You can get them all from this page here with no sign up, no ads or newsletter nonsense. Just scroll down a little bit until you see all the packs.

24 packs added for August/September including Loops, Foley, Sound effects, a lot of live recordings from around the world and some other experimental packs I had fun playing about with. Packs including recordings from Kosovo, Cairo, Dublin, Madrid and the Sahara desert in which I got to record a live Moroccan band playing into the night. I also got to record some Traditional Irish music sessions while in Dublin and have posted some of the recordings! Theres also lots of leftover foley and SFX from some past games that were not used including Character voices in the style of Sims and Animal Crossing, Monster Growls and Grunts which is my personal fav and Polar Wind ambiences along side lots of other SFX and foley. For experimental percussion sounds I made one shots from the sound of pistachio shells and another pack from the sound of pebbles falling onto tin cans which could be useful for anyone who enjoys organic or experimental percussion in the productions. There also some other loop packs that I messed around with such as 8bit Bongo percussions and an old pack of Synthetic guitar loops that i recently came across again. Hope these can be useful to someone out there.

With Squarespace it does ask for a lot of personal information so you can use this site to make up fake address and just use a fake name and email if you're not comfortable with providing this info. I don't use it for anything but for your own piece of mind this is probably beneficial.

Feel free to use anything you like, everything is CC0, so no need to credit me or the site. Just grab what you need and make cool stuff. I'd love to see what you create if you feel like sharing!

If you'd like to see what other people have said about the samples you can see here in a recent post I made in a different subreddit.

Join me at r/musicsamplespacks if you would like as that is where I will be posting all future packs and little behind the scenes videos. If you guys know of any other subreddits that might benefit from these sounds feel free to repost it there.

Tech Support Audio mistake was made. Can I separate it and fix it?

Tech Support How can I upscale game assets for a project of mine?

I downloaded a bunch of assets from thespriteresource to use on my video, but the image resolution is too low. I already tried upscaling the image in photoshop but they're still a bit blurry and they look weird, is there anything else i can try?

Tech Support Why is my project file size so large?

Upvotes

(CAPCUT WINDOWS 9.2.0.3931)

"0903 (4)" is 1920 x 1080, 30fps animation that has 7 seconds of actual motion. the rest of it is black with audio.

for comparison, as shown in the screenshot,

"1 W4NT T0 B3 4 M4CH1N3" is 3840 x 2160, 30fps, 30 second animation loaded with drawings, effects and keyframes.

i have ZERO idea why 0903 is so large.

"0903 (3)" (the same as the problem video, btw) exports at 5.5MB.

"1 W4NT T0 B3 4 M4CH1N3" exports at 89MB

not only that, but "0903 (4)" (and all its previous versions i made using the import subproject tool) are all extremely laggy - to the point that i cannot use it. ive already cleared cache and proxy.

the only thing in the project is a GIF, a series of PNG's, and the audio i was using.

A: compound clip shown in [B]
B: compound clip containing gif and compound clip shown in [A]
C: compound clip shown in [B]. the only thing changed in this compound clip is cropping, size, and position. the animation only shows for ~7 seconds before everything is black with the audio in the background. the total length of the exported video is 1:16

i have no idea why this is happening; it's making editing impossible because its so laggy.

GIF featured in video. please dont mind my extremely backwards animating process. im nowhere near professional or practical. yes i like roblox; smite me down for being childish or something

Did you know you can help this community directly? A cool tip

Upvotes

We've seen an uptick in people gatekeeping in this community, often being not decent humans.

One of the easiest things you can do is to report somebody's post or comment if it breaks one of our rules, especially around "Don't be a Jerk"

It's totally fine to disagree. Do so politely. Behave as an adult. Name calling, doxing etc is not okay here. Try not to be caustic. Life is hard enough.

Treat everyone "as if" they're having a bad day and you'll be fine. Disagree if you like - just don't be disagreeable. Remember there's a human being on the other side of the keyboard

Any time we get a number of flagged items, it automatically gets pulled, and a moderator manually removes it.

Thank you for your attention to this community service note.

We return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Workflow Faceless creators: Do you storyboard visuals while scripting, or wing it on the timeline?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I run a faceless channel, and planning visuals has become my biggest workflow bottleneck.

When writing a script, I find it really hard to brainstorm visuals on paper. I almost always end up dropping the voiceover into the editor and improvising visuals on the timeline—searching for B-roll, overlays, and sound effects on the fly through pure trial and error.

The issue is that this feels painfully slow and inefficient. Every tutorial says you should pre-plan every scene and gather all your assets before opening your editing software, but my brain struggles to visualize pacing until I actually see clips on the screen.

For those of you making faceless content:

  • Do you fully script visual cues and batch-download assets beforehand? Or do you build it dynamically in the editor?
  • If you pre-plan, what does your system look like?
  • How did you break the habit of endless timeline trial-and-error?

Curious to hear how you balance workflow speed without losing creative flow.

Workflow Football Cut Ups

Upvotes

Hello, I am requesting some assistance with an efficient work flow for the new project I’m working on. I signed on for a side hustle where I’m combing through a college game (about an hour’s worth of footage), identifying all plays when a specific player is on the field adding said plays to the timeline and then adding an arrow above the players head manually for the first second or two of each game.

This process is usually pretty easy for certain positions like QB and Lineman. But cornerbacks and wide receivers it can take about two hours to handle. The goal is 25 videos a week. I’m wondering if there are any improvements to my process, tools I should utilize, or general tips I should know to improve the speed on my edits.

Additional context I’m using Davinci Resolve 21, which I have been using now for a couple of weeks and I’m still learning.

Hiring [HIRING] $25/hr – Video Editor for Visual Novel Game Trailer

Upvotes

Hey! I’m looking for an experienced video editor to edit a trailer for an upcoming visual novel game.

Rate: $25/hr. The project is estimated to require around 4 hours of editing.

This is a serious project, so I’m looking for someone with a strong portfolio and experience editing cinematic or promotional content. Previous experience editing game trailers is a major plus.

You’ll also need to add Chinese subtitles alongside the English subtitles. All subtitle text is already typed out and will be provided.

If interested, DM me directly on Reddit with:

- Your Discord username

- Your editing portfolio

- Any previous game trailers you've edited, if applicable

Please don't DM without a portfolio.

Example of the editing style we're looking for:

Workflow How are you guys actually editing 3–4 camera DJ sets?

Upvotes

Genuine question.

I’ve been doing more multicam live-event work recently and I've started wondering whether I,’ve been approaching the whole thing wrong.

With a typical DJ set you've got something like:

* DJ camera
* Wide
* Crowd
* Roaming camera

The actual edit isn't particularly complicated, but deciding which camera should be on at every moment means watching a *lot* of footage which takes up a lot of my time.

Especially when you're trying to react to things happening in the crowd, drops, transitions, hands going up, movement around the booth etc.

Anyone uses software that does that beginning shot selection pass?

Curious how other people handle this.

Do you manually cut everything?

Have you got a system for choosing cameras?

Or have you found anything that actually does a decent job automatically?

Monthly Thread September What Editing Software should I use?

Upvotes

Looking for Video Editing Software? THIS is your thread!

This post covers the vast majority of "What software should I use?" questions. It’s designed as a self-serve guide to help people find the right tools fast.

TL;DR? DaVinci Resolve for full-featured editing, Olive/Kdenlive for open-source, Clipchamp for easy basics.

Isn’t there an AI that magically edits everything?

Not yet. If it existed, we'd scream about it from the rooftops.

Stick around—things are changing quickly.

Before You Ask Anything

You must know two things first:

  1. Your Footage Type — Different codecs affect performance dramatically.
  2. Your Hardware Specs — “Good gaming PC” is not useful.

Not Good With Computers? Here’s How to Check

Footage

Footage from phones, webcams, GoPros, and screen recordings can choke your system.

Check with: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Common problems:

  • Out-of-sync audio? Likely Variable Frame Rate.
  • Bad playback? Usually a hardware limitation, not the editor. Use proxies.

More info in our wiki:

Hardware

Minimum viable editing rig:

  • Recent i7 CPU
  • 16GB RAM
  • A GPU with 4GB+ VRAM
  • SSD for cache

Check system with: https://www.hwinfo.com/

We ONLY need: CPU model, RAM amount, GPU model + VRAM.

Recommendations

Full Power, Free Tools

DaVinci Resolve — 99% of the full program is free.

Easy but Limited

  • Clipchamp — Microsoft's simple editor.
  • VN Editor — Free, lightweight, watermark at end.

(CapCut now hides many features behind Pro.)

Professional Tools (obligatory mention)

  • Premiere Pro — Industry standard; huge ecosystem, tons of tutorials, widely used across YouTube, corporate, and broadcast.
  • Avid Media Composer — Dominant in film/TV pipelines; rock-solid for longform, multicam, and shared workflows.
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio — $299 one-time; advanced color, better GPU performance, noise reduction, and the good AI tools.
  • Final Cut Pro — Mac-only rocket ship; insanely fast on Apple Silicon, great for fast turnaround work.

Open Source - Totally free.

  • Olive Editor — Clean UI.
  • Kdenlive — Very capable, actively developed.
  • ShotCut — Straightforward, good for beginners.
  • OpenShot — Simple but can struggle with heavier projects.
  • Avidemux — Old-school, powerful for specific tasks but not a great editor.

Special Effects

Editing in a Browser (Run Locally)

  • Novella.io - new, free, pay for AI generative elements OR bring your own API keys. Very cool, if in early beta.
  • VidMix — New, free, surprisingly powerful.
  • PikaMov — Keyframe animation on the web.
  • wide.video — Background removal, noise reduction, all done locally.
  • PhotoPea — Web-based Photoshop replacement.

Web Based Editorial

Compression & Utility Tools

  • Shutter Encoder — The Swiss Army Knife. Transcode anything, handle HDR, upscaling, unwrap/rewrap, download media, prep proxies—if it touches video, this thing can probably do it.
  • Lossless Cut — Quick trimming without re-encoding.
  • Smart Media Cutter — Silence detection + XML export.
  • FreeUpscaler — Cloud computing upscaler.

Mobile Editors

  • Premiere Mobile — Surprisingly capable and tightly integrated with CC.
  • VN Editor — Fast, friendly, cross-platform, zero learning curve.
  • Instagram Edits — Simple but powerful for social workflows.
  • iMovie — Beginner-friendly on iOS.
  • LumaFusion — The pro option for tablets/phones.
  • KineMaster — Feature-heavy on Android.

Screen Recording

  • OBS — The free standard. Record in MKV, then rewrap to MP4.
  • viewio — Free screen recorder, Mac only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).
  • openscreen — Free screen recorder, Crossplatform only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).

Animated Captions

Updates (Dec 2025)

  • CapCut/HitFilm are no longer recommended.
  • Premiere Mobile and Clipchamp (web)

New Tools We’re Watching

  • Whisper-GUI (Windows)
  • MacWhisper (Mac)
  • Offdocs — Openshot in the cloud

BEFORE YOU COMMENT

Begin with: "I read the above"

Then provide:

  • CPU + Model
  • RAM
  • GPU + VRAM
  • Footage details (camera/screen, codec, container, framerate)

Removed tools: CapCut (now Crapcut), HitFilm (dead). FFS this thread isn’t about arguing what to use, but rather for a novice to figure out what to use.

Monthly Thread September Feedback Thread.

Upvotes

This is the Monthly thread for feedback.

If you post your video, you need to come back and review at least one other person's work!

Key thoughts - Keep it civil.

  • Feedback is "This section isn't working because of this."
  • Feedback is not: "This is shit."
  • If something is terrible, just move on.
  • The more specific/suggestions the better.

Don't give a laundry list. Pick the 1-2 things that are the biggest issues and then comment.

Spoiler worth reading: *we expect you to* review TWO other videos - and edit your comment to *include those* after you've commented.

**Copy/paste this section**:

  • , Link: (don't forget the running time)
  • Two other videos I reviewed (link to the other ,comments NOT the video itself)
