Hey Survivors and Advocates,

I'm Rachelle Smith, the voice behind The Silenced Voices of MST. Growing up as an Air Force brat, I saw the military as a symbol of safety. But my world was shattered by sexual assault, and I struggled in silence for nearly a decade. I didn’t just lose my career; I also lost a defining part of my identity.

But this isn’t about me. It’s about all of us who’ve faced the unimaginable. Your voice is a weapon against military sexual trauma (MST). When you share your story, you’re speaking for countless others.

I care because I was, and am, a survivor. Military Injustice causes isolation and severe mental health crises, even loss of life. This is unacceptable in an institution that should uphold trust and integrity.

If you’re seeking support and to reclaim your sense of self, The Silenced Voices of MST is here to guide you. We’re building a community where your voice is heard, your experiences validated, and your healing supported. We provide a safe space for connection, recovery resources, and advocacy.

Together, we are stronger. By sharing your voice, you help us combat Military Injustice and create ripples of change.

Every time you listen and share, you’re part of this movement. You’re helping create a world where survivors feel supported and empowered. Your story matters, and your voice can inspire others.

Then sign up for these services. I did and I don't get contacted anymore.

The last one also gives resources like Deceased Do Not Contact which I used when I started getting mail for my deceased step-father after I moved my mom to my town and had all her mail forwarded to my address (but it's not free).

Question/Advice Maybe it gets easier

Upvotes

Idk if this is a question or just a vent. I recently came back from deployment and have been diagnosed with severe PTSD.

Some days are good, some days are bad. It’s hard to explain to people. It was not a fun time. I don’t really sleep anymore. If I do sleep the nightmares are bad.

I get overwhelmed easily now. Little things like going out and being around people make me exhausted. I am trying so hard but some days it’s just a lot. My spouse does his best to understand and to be supportive but I can tell it’s a lot for him too.

I’m in treatment and it’s frustrating because it feels like it’s just one medical appointment after another. No one knows exactly how to handle my situation and it’s always just a concerned shrug and well let’s dig into this more before we have an answer.

You know what? I’m tired. I’m tired of the endless appointments, I’m tired of feeling like I always have to try and reword things for my spouse. I’m tired of not knowing what to say to people.

I just… idk. Yeah maybe I should just suck it up, but sometimes it’s just not that easy.

Question/Advice Struggling mentally, I think.

Upvotes

Anyone else feel like they don’t have a purpose anymore? I’ve been struggling with that lately. When going through college to be a teacher, I thought my purpose was to get my degree to help other people. Now that I’ve been doing that for 3 years, it’s been a struggle to feel like there’s any purpose.
Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do. But I feel like if tomorrow was my last day, I’d be content because I fulfilled my purpose in life.
(Sometimes I just want to bang my head on my pillow, asking myself “why are you like this?”)

Discussion 2 years post-discharge. Thinking about going the MSW / counseling route, but I have a few real questions pertaining to my history & weed

Upvotes

Got out 2 yrs ago and I'm currently stuck in the dead-end job loop. I’ve been through the wringer mentally (ADD, OCD, CPTSD from my time in service).

Lost my battle buddy.

Had my heart broken and abandoned.

Went through some really dark days...

Lol once I intentionally Baker acted myself when my ex left me for my friend...

then changed my mind and tried to leave.

I was chased down and tackled by 8 cops 💀😂..

but I’ve always been the guy people come to when they need someone who actually listens and gets it.

Before I burn my GI Bill on a psych or social work degree, I need the harsh truth on two things:

1.) Does having a stacked mental health history actually stop you from getting licensed, or is it fine as long as you keep your shit together on the clock?

2.) How strict are licensing boards / grad programs on personal cannabis use off the clock?

Anyone here take this path after getting out? Appreciate any honest feedback.

Question/Advice Great uncle discharge paperwork

Upvotes

He served in 'Nam, but his next of kin (sisters) don't seem to want anything to do with him.

Is there anyone that has gone through a similar situation to get discharge paperwork in order for him to get a proper funeral/space at the VA with his brothers?

Call for Help Presumably claims

Upvotes

I'm not sure if I should claim something from the Pact Act Presumably even though I have the diagnosis as I don't want to mess with my rating. It's not like I'm worried about exams again, it's just don't want to go through worrying about being reevaluated. My previous claims were solid, but I've read so many horror stories about those being reduced even though they had solid claims before.

What I have the diagnosis for isn't something that could kill me, I think that is also a reason to not claim.

Honest opinions but don't hate, please.

Question/Advice feeling lost

Upvotes

I’m really considering returning to active duty service. I got out back in April and since then I’ve been using my G.I. bill and I have a good rating and the pay is really amazing since I live in Texas, but the downside of it is that I feel like I lost my purpose. I am 22 and there’s really nothing going for me and I just miss working in the military because it doesn’t compare to the civilian side at least for me, like I know the military has its Rocky Roads and It could be fine sometimes and It could be really mentally draining, but it really something unique that you wouldn’t get from the civilian side. And I know I will be sacrificing the good benefits that I’ve been receiving since I’ve been out to rejoin the military, but I just want some feedback.

If there’s someone out there that has went through the same mental block with feeling lost and having no purpose when they got out. I was a 92y promotable specialist and I really enjoyed my time in Korea despite what people may think about Korea I really loved Korea and I would go back in a heartbeat and on top of that I had two opportunities to go airborne school, but I refuse to because I had a mindset that I was getting out and now that I’m out it’s low-key killing me that I never got to experience airborne.

Question/Advice Advice needed

Upvotes

What’s up ya’ll, just looking for some advice anything is appreciated. Just recently got out of the Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego. Came back home to Illinois a couple months ago and just can’t see myself staying here. Feels like everything I’ve built for myself in the last 4 years is outside of home which is why I’ve been thinking of packing my stuff up in my truck and going back to San Diego or maybe somewhere in Arizona and go to college for supply chain management as that is what I did in the military. Also am interested in trying out wildland firefighting. I feel like the best way to do this is to just bite the bullet and send it but again any input is appreciated, thank you guys and girls in advance!

Question/Advice Who else always forgets to ask for veteran discount?

My wife always has to remind me to ask. I have always felt weird asking, so I’ve gotten accustomed to forgetting about it. Anyone feel the same way or knows where this mentality comes from?

Question/Advice Vrne application?

Upvotes

Hello

If I want to move states in 8 months depending on if I get accepted into a schooling program or not, does it matter if I apply in my current state and then move? Has anyone had experience in this? Also how does this program work for a competitive schooling program ? Thanks for any input.

Question/Advice Post deployment support

Upvotes

I’m feeling a lot of resentment and the things that come with having been to war. As a reservist and independent deployer, I’m struggling to find a community of people who have deployed or who have been through similar situations and I’m pretty isolated. I’ve started counseling at a veterans community center but my counselor hasn’t served and their group sessions are small and don’t include others who’s served in wars or similar circumstances. The only community I’ve found is online like these groups. I’ve had a very difficult transition back with my unit disbanding as soon as I returned and then immediately being transferred to a new unit. I guess what I’m really trying to ask is for those who have done the things and seen the things, how do you get past the moral injuries and the paranoia and obsession once you come home? How long did it take you to settle and how do you keep your brain from retriggering?

I was approved in April, and I have not been able to reach anyone since then. I'm just out here starting all over with picking a school and occupation and FAFSA and all of that. I've called countless times for help. I'm supposed to start this month on the 14th at Ultimate Medical Academy

Question/Advice Social life post military

Upvotes

Hey guys, I am in the USAF and in fire and I feel like fire protection is very isolated from the rest of the squadron and people; so meeting people tends to be a bit rough and I’m very extroverted but when you see people for 48 hours and then the other shift comes on it tends to be hard to engage in relationships and connections and can get a bit lonely even though I’d say I’m extroverted and prefer to be around people when I find myself hard to make connections around base given my job.

I ( 20m) will be out at 22 and Fast forward thinking of college, which is why I put this on r/vets I see a lot of peers back home out having fun and being very social with people and I was just thinking at 22 in college at a university will I be too old to have I guess the college experience socially with people or is it going to kind of be like an outsider as I’d be older going to college with the military taking up most my early adult hood? Just trying to gauge where other people with the similar situation are and their experiences post military going to college. Thank you!

Discussion I want to apologize and reach out for some help

Upvotes

Well I was in the Army for around 6 years, I recently started tapering off my medicine and I feel sick, everything hurts but only in the way that I feel such an ache and pain from what I’ve done in my past, I absolutely love life and can see the potential it has, I never realized how much I wanted to not be here anymore but I didn’t know that is what the feeling was. I love everyone and wish I could go back in time and change things, I have been crying a lot recently which is very new for me because I never felt empathy for anyone. I do now, I’m sorry everyone.

UPDATE : Thank you everyone, I’ve read over the comments and called my doctor today, turns out those are “feelings” who would’ve known. I’ve been “gone” for all this time and I forgot what it even was to feel again.

Imposter Syndrome is no joke.

Question/Advice Depressed, cant find work, feeling hopeless and lost.

Upvotes

I cant find a job that I can phsyically handle, ive looked on usa jobs, virt force and all that jazz and there is nothing near me. I live in Savannah GA and I never thought it would be this hard when i got out to get a job my disabilities allow me to do. All i do is apply to minimum wage jobs and hear nothing back and see how im unqualified for anything else. I look on these sights and filter for my location and theres nothing for 100 miles. What the actual hellI havent been more than momentarily happy for well over 2 years and it only feels like its getting worse. Im trying to go to BH but as you know it takes forever and Im either stuck in traffic or some other crap to where i cant make it. Im really frustrated and im sorry if this is difficult to read.

Question/Advice Kudos to the VA and USAF for saving my eye so far . Advice included

Upvotes

A couple days ago I noticed some unusual changes to my eyesight in one eye. I started seeing floaters, and then what appeared to be almost like seaweed floating in my vision. Then my vision started to haze over (I've had eye surgery/near sighted etc) . I called the VA tele-nurse because I was on the borderline of not sure if it was a detachment or something else . (i'm one of these people that does not like to go to the hospital unless I really need to ) After giving the nurse the symptoms she immediately recommended I go to the ER. I told her that i read Veterans could use the ER on the base if it was an emergency since it was close by. She confirmed, so my wife drove me and I was seen immediately , run through a battery of tests and the full bird Colonel Dr found a tear in my retina along with vitreous degeneration. This is apparently more common in people over 50. Within an hour, i was sent to a retina specialist and the VA approved the care rather than having to drive 45 minutes to a VA ER Trauma center. 5 hours after my "oh shit this isn't good" moment, i was home, laser surgery done and in bed resting. I received follow up calls from both the VA and the Air Force Medical Center. I know the VA isn't perfect, but I am exceptionally grateful. My advice if you notice something wrong with your eyes GET IT CHECKED! Also, make sure you are aware of your options in an emergency because sometimes the civilian ER may not be the best option. i'm still in danger of a detachment, but the worst part of it is over for now and now there will be a lot of follow up from the VA. i'll spare the picture because it looks pretty gross. My nephew said I look like a "lizard man."
