Do timetables change throughout the year?

My timetable is out. But it says semester 1 and semester 2 isn’t available.

Let’s say I have a day free. Do I find a job where I can work the entire day I have free? Or is that risky in case next semester I don’t have it free and then I’ll have to change my job?
Or does everyone just play it safe by having jobs after like 5pm?

Timetables will almost certainly change for Semester 2, especially if your timetable explicitly says semster 1.

Everyone I knew who worked in term time at uni worked different days every week, or did evenings and weekends.

I can tell you that at the university where I work, we are still shuffling around some teaching for first semester. It's not anything that will really affect students, just things like "hi [colleague], I am scheduled to deliver the week 3 lecture in [module] but I have a conference that week. Could you deliver the lecture you are scheduled to deliver in week 4 in that module in week 3 and I'll do mine week 4 instead?" None of that is visible (yet) to students as they won't know the topics of each week's lecture until the start of term.

However, the second semester is still very tentative even for staff. We are actively planning and revising based on student numbers and staffing levels and availability. Last I checked my timetable for semester two, it still had "Tentative and subject to change. Not for release to students" written in large bold red font above it. We didn't have a 'final' semester 2 timetable for staff (2025/26 academic year) until shortly before the Christmas break and it wasn't made available to students until early in the new year (when students were still primarily concerned with semester 1 exams).

So yes, your timetable will almost certainly be different in semester two. My advice would be to speak with you manager at work and let them know (or give them a copy of) your time table for semester one and be clear that semester two isn't finalised yet and that you will let them know your timetable or availability as soon as you can.

I’d recommend being flexible. At my uni we get out timetable a semester at a time. I currently know my semester 1 timetable, but won’t find out my semester 2 timetable until around Christmas. The timetable will almost certainly change though

At my uni, the timetable completely changes between semesters. It also changes minorly over time during the semester, so unless your timetable explicitly says it's like this for the entire semester, I wouldn't even count on having that day free for that whole period.

The only thing that changes on my timetable is one class each semester. Even then it's always had the same times so it's a godsend for me personally

I'm on an art course so that might be why since we have 4 modules a year and 2 of those go across semester one and two

I had a job through my studies just make sure it’s flexible/ they know you’re a student. I had set days off so couldn’t be booked in same time as uni ie. mon, tue, Fri. Then would just update my manager when I needed to change based on new term.

When I taught in HE, even S1 timetables could change slightly over the first week or so. S2 was never published until near Christmas. It didn't seem to bother the students because we warned them that there could be slight changes.

Semester 2 may well be different, especially if your uni does semesterised modules (different ones in Sem 1 and Sem 2). Sometimes depends on the course as well, and whether that course leans towards set days or if it’s more flexible.

Yes, you will probably have an entirely new set of modules for Semester 2. If you do get a job you may want to tell them ahead of time that you may have to change hours to fit your studies.

Yes, it will change. Odd that semester 2 isn’t available though. There should be people you can contact though to get some clarity on this - most universities have a timetabling team

We do the whole year at the same time, some institutions do Sem 1 and Sem 2 separately. The only time we’ve done that was during Covid (which was my idea).
